Dan its pretty easy, but make sure you follow the write up in the tech section, we tried and kept getting hung up, went back and reread it and found out we had to remove 3 items, starter, water pump housing and rear master brake cyl, and it came right out, make sure you have a floor jack to put under the engine, its a big help.
  2. Thats putting it mildly, the noise was so loud other people could hear it when I rode.........!!!
  3. There wasn't a trace of yamabond on the 86 cases, they were clean as a whistle.....very shiny. I also noticed some marks on some of the gears from the 86 that weren't present on the 83, and they were machined on the gears, not from wear and tear.
  4. I also noticed that someone had the engine opened up before me, there was yamabond on the engine cases when we split them, there wasnt any on the 86 when we split it open. Just wondering if someone tried the tranny fix before I got it, and didnt get it right.

  7. ]I am in the process of swapping out the tranny of my 83 and transplanting a tranny from an 86. Now back in 2005 after the very first Vogel, I had to replace the pinion gear in it. We pulled it out, dropped the oil pan to make sure there wasnt too much debris left in the engine. Its been 7 years and I have been riding around until about a year ago and the tranny finally quit shifting and I had to lay it up for this repair. We finally got it opened up this weekend and once we did we were in for quite a surprise to find quite a bit of metal bits, not just shavings but nice size chunks of the pinion gear, we fished it out with a magnet and got all of it out. We first realized what we were in for when I pulled the oil pump out and quite a few bits of metal fell out of it and when I shook it you could hear it rattling around inside of it. Take a look at the pinion and all the metal we took out 7 years later!!! If you take a look at picture #2 you will notice that the threaded part is broken off, this is what precipitated the destruction of the pinion........and when we pulled it all apart, the rest looked fine with the exception of the star wheel that rachets the shift, one of the pins was loose, becasue the tab that was supposed to hold it in place was bent and the pin was slipping out.   11. Well spent most of the day out in the shop with K-Rider, we made good headway on the engine teardown and tranny swap. Got the 83 engine all apart got the tranny out of it and out of the 86 donor motor. Gene had to leave early, so I finally got it into the 83 cases, wasnt easy by myself but finally got in in and started closing up the cases. We found a bunch of metal shavings in the bottom of the engine, those had to be left over from when the pinion gear got all tore up. We think we got it all out, I forgot to bring the little baggy in, so I will post pictures of it tomorrow. It was amazing how big some of the metal was. I had to order all the gaskets but forgot one, have to go back and order the water pump cover gasket, also ordered the new fusebox upgrade from Skydoc. Lookin forward to getting back on board the Venture.
  12. Prayers for you and your family, its not easy to go through. Went through it with both my parents in 95. They are in a much better place now..........it was extremely hard with both of them in the rest/hospice at the same time. We are here for you if you need us just shout out. God Bless.

I might go out and buy the second book. The first was an excellent read, my wife even enjoyed reading it. Great writer, writing about our favorite topic.

Wow thats not much mileage, you got a long way to go before you have to worry about 2nd gear, which is what I am doing to my 83 now.....pamper the tranny and you may not have to worry about it for a while. They usually start acting up around 60-65,000 miles. Mine finally quit working at 88,000 miles. So go easy on the tranny and your good to go. That is the only problem that the 83's suffered from, and they are the fastest Ventures around. Just ask any 1 Gen owner. Of course you know your post is really useless without pics, that the first rule of VR, you gotta post pics of your bike...............that is rule numero uno here at VR.
  17. Nearly all of them are gone, always like Dick Clark, I can remember watche AB on Saturdays, always a great show, one for the ages, had lots of great music talent and always treated them with awe and respect. Rest in peace Mr. Clark. You will be missed!

Ruffy every time I leave my garage door open for any length of time, I get bird nests, on the shelves and more times in my helmets than anyplace else..........I now put my helmets open side down, no more nest, I even came home one day, left my helmet on the bike, an hour later a nest was started under it on top on my saddle bag..........

  20. Well they still look the same, looks just like the one on my o7 V Star, except chrome. Has it quit working or broken? JC whitney has them as well as most of the major m/c parts catalogs.
  21. If i remember right my 83 is turning about 3500 RPM's at 70mph.
  22. I almost bought an early Concours before I bought the Venture. There are so many nice sport tourers out there, its not going to be an easy decision.........the price will be the big factor.......promised the wife, will not spend any more that what I make on the V Star......but I might have a little extra saved away to add to it by then. And the FJR and the BMW along with a few others are on the list.......but price of maintenance is also a concern.
  23. I am getting closer to getting the Venture back on the road and I am thinking if I do, I dont need two touring bikes, so might get rid of the V Star and buy a Sport touring bike. I am thinking a used Concours or ST1100 or ST1300. There are a few others I am looking at, but those two are at the top of my list. I have a co-worker I ride with and he is a trial member here that rides a Concours, and I will be trying it out soon, funny thing is, he wants to buy a 1st Gen for a second bike. He has been helping me with my Venture project. The V Star is a great bike, but Charlene doesnt ride it with me, she is not as comfortable on it as she is the Venture. So some time in the near future you might see me ride up on something other than the Venture or the V Star.
