  1. The rear spline on the 1986 should not be greased. It is lubricated by final drive oil. Greasing the rear spline on the 1986-1993 may plug the oil holes and prevent final drive oil from lubing the spline.
  2. Well, the 1986 model year (and later) of the Venture was pretty much trouble free. I can't recall any intrinsic or systemic issues with the 1300 Venture. Final drive, transmission, and engine were all good. Since you are in Canada, perhaps you could provide me with the VIN of your three 1986's.   3. Yep. I broke the fill plug off my 1983 rear reservoir. Jim has the correct method. Use a Crescent wrench on the reservoir body at the fill plug boss. Of course, it is too late for you now. I tried epoxying the broken part back to the reservoir body, but it didn't hold. Brake fluid is potent stuff. Your best bet is to go on eBay and find another reservoir. Any year of First Generation Venture will work for the RESERVOIR. There is one from a 1984 on eBay that includes the entire rear brake system (reservoir, master cylinder, brake lines and caliper. It would work, but I have concerns about the proximity of the plastic reservoir to the HOT exhaust on the First Gen.

  5. If I understand correctly, you are looking for the hose that goes from a T fitting just above the twinkie to the larger nipple on the bottom of the air cleaner? That breather hose is part number 47G-11166-00. That small diameter hose originally ran from the smaller nipple on the bottom of the air cleaner to an inline filter and then to atmosphere. This arrangement for the air cleaner oil drain was only on the 1983 and was subsequently scrapped on later models and in fact there is a Tech Bulletin outlining a modification to be made, that would eliminate the drain filter and route the hose to a T fitting on the twinkie.   8. New metal impellers are still available from Yamaha. Best place to get genuine Yamaha parts at a discount is Partzilla.com. But, since the water pump impeller was most likely upgraded by the dealer already, before you buy a new impeller, pull the water pump cover and have a look at the impeller currently installed. Bet it is a metal one. Yes, either eBay or here. However, You can (and should) just upgrade from the 26H (1983) TCI to the 41R (1984-1989) TCI. More reliable and common. To use the 41R TCI on your '83, one needs to simply plug the vacuum port on the 1983 number 2 carburetor and pull the vacuum source off the #2 synch port on the cab boot. But since you are planning to use a single carb setup, even that is not relevant. You can not tell if second gear is bad without driving the bike. And no, the second gear "fix" is not indicated by any "mark". (That is a common fallacy.) Yamaha never issued a formal recall for the second gear problem. Not to say that a dealer or previous owner might have performed the fix. The only way to tell if the second gear was fixed is to split the cases and examine the installed gears.

  10. I have corrected my post concerning the Honda automobiles that run valve shims. I added the Toyota engine models that run 25mm valve shims. They are available from "250" through "330". As for smaller shim thicknesses, keep in mind that Yamaha installed shims at the factory with 0.02mm increments. All aftermarket and new Yamaha shims are in 0.05mm increments. If you can find used shims that were removed and replaced during a valve adjustment, you will undoubtedly have a greater selection of sizes.

  12. When you remove the jet block from the carb body, shoot some spray carb cleaner through the various orifices, followed by compressed air.
  13. ABS cement along with MEK solvent will work very well for virtually any plastic on the Venture (all the plastic is ABS). Cracks without missing pieces can be repaired easily; the repair can be nearly invisible (if the cement and reinforcement is applied to the back side). On your terminal panel, I notice that all the recessed mounting holes are broken. Very common, but easily repaired to better than new. 1. Shave or grind down until flush the remnants of the broken out recessed bosses. 2. Cut a few squares of 1/8" thick ABS from a sheet of ABS. 3. Bond the squares of ABS to the leveled backside of the panel with ABS cement. Bond two layers of 1/8" ABS to equal approximately 1/4" build up. 4. Using a Forstner bit sized to fit within the recess, bore down through one layer of newly applied ABS. 5. Use a twist drill of a size appropriate for the 4mm recessed hex screw and drill a through hole. Some photos of my Terminal Panel repair:
  14. That plug is the cap for the float valve seat with net filter. The cap has an O-ring. Looking at the pic, it appears that the cap has been replaced (the original cap was staked into the carb body, but the new one has not been staked to secure it).
  15. Why do you not want to run the stock setup? Excessive oil will simply return to the crankcase, with no visible oil in a properly set-up breather system.

  18. "Main Power cable"? "about six inches" I don't understand. What are you calling the "main power cable"? And you repaired "about six inches" how? First thing I would do is check with a VOM that you indeed have 12 volts on EACH SIDE of the "IGNITION" fuse.
  19. The purpose of this factory mod was to drain oil that accumulated in the airbox, back to the crankcase. On the 1983's the smaller tube from the airbox drained any accumulated oil to the ground under the left crankcase, through a small inline filter. The larger tube between the airbox and the "twinkie" was only for crankcase ventilation, (think PCV). If the crankcase was not overfilled with oil, there was usually no oil accumulating in the airbox. The trouble with oil in the airbox was that Yamaha specified an excessive amount of oil to be added to the crankcase after an oil and filter change. M84-017 Air Box Oil Leakage .pdf
  20. The method of crankcase ventilation will have no effect on gas mileage. The filter is fine where it is. Its primary job in your case is to simply filter crankcase blow by gases. Personally, I never saw the need for the Skydoc kit.
  21. There is a very compact CB antennae base that provides a 90° connection for the coax cable. It is called Firering. I used it in combination with a Firestick on my First Gen.
  22. Correct. The two different shocks are interchangeable as far as mounting. Air delivery will have to be adapted, though.
