Repeter, Just in case you decide to continue on with the fork rebuild, I thought I would bring you up to date on my rebuild progress. Today I replaced all of the internal guide rings, the seals and dust cover. I installed the progressive springs and cut the pvc preload spacers as per progressive instructions. Only think left is to fill the forks with oil. Before I do that I have to wait 2 more days for the drain bolts to come in from yamaha. I have to replace them, I stripped the heads when I tried to remove them by hand. Need to use an impact wrench for this part. I plan to reassemble the front end this weekend. It's not as bad a job as I thought if would be. Waiting for all the parts to come in is the biggest pain in the a$$. If I had everything here I could have done this in a weekend. It would also have helped if there were more info on this project here on the site. There is a lot about the 1st gen forks, but not much for the second gen. Its the same basic idea, but the internal parts are not all the same. Anyhow, if you need any help just PM me.

Pinwall cycle has used grills.

I'm in the middle of the same project, and at the same point as you. Parts should be here today. I plan on having everything back together by this weekend. Just take your time, do a couple of steps a day. you will get there. This is my first fork rebuild and yes it is a little scary. But it is doable. I am also doing this on a 99 RSV. So if you have any questions just PM me. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

Sea foam, give it a couple of tanks of sea foam mix. Carbs are probably gummed up. Or get the dealer to pull and clean the carbs.
-
How long has it been sitting in the pawn shop? Carbs may be gumed up. $4000.00 is very good price for a 06. Probably just want to unload it. All years RSV's can have the whine. It can be at any speed. They are all different. Some are very bad, some not at all, some just a little. Most are mild and you just live with it, Because the rest of the bike is awsome. If it isn't all dinged up and runs good and not leaking fluids, I would by it. Put a little work and $$ and your friend could have a nice bike.

Got the bolt out. Used a 1/4" straight allen wrench with inpact wrench. Had to drive the allen wrench on with a hammer, came right out. Waiting on all new internal parts to come in, then i can reassemble the forks. Should have everthing back together by the weekend. I hope.

OH NO, not me. I have the snow blower ready to go. That should keep that white stuff away. Don't like snow,NO NO NO.

I got the forks off the bike,I just can't diassemble the tube with out getting that bolt out. I'm going to try a SAE allen wrench that is just a little over sized with a impact wrench this time.
-
Thats what I'm thinking, both tubes have the same marks. You can't see them with out the right lignting. Now the new problem. I stripped the hex bolt head on the bolt at the bottom of one of the forks. I guess I will try the hydrulic method, using a jack and filling the tube with oil and forcing the seal out with pressure. Looks good on utube.

Ok, I pulled the forks. I have not pulled them apart yet. waiting on new seals and spring kit. I did notice some very faint, very had to see scratches just above the dust cover.is this normal? Can they be polished out? Or just leave well enough alone?

how do you remove the inner fairing?
steamer replied to steamer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Never mind, brain farts over. Sometimes you just have to walk away for a while. found the two bolts I didn't see right in front of me the first 30 times I looked. -

I like you first idea better. I was planning on replacing the fork seal and install progressive springs but after getting in side and seeing all those wires and stuff, maybe I'll just put it back together and take it to the dealer. -
Time to get serious. Just ordered the progressive springs and OEM seals. I will start tear down tomorrow. I'm going to re-pack steering neck bearings while in there. If anyone can think of anything else I should do while its apart, this would be a good time for your input. What oil should i use? What grease for the steering bearings? Thanks for your input.

Went for a nice 5 hour ride today. I notice a little oil on the left brake caliper. Sure enough Its a leaking fork seal. So I say to Robin, I'm going to start tearing down the front fairing so I can pull the forks. She said take it to Lane Yamaha. I said how come, I can do this. She said... Not if I want to stay married:think: See my problem. Anyone know what it will cost to have the dealer do this job?

Both of my RSV's had after market mufflers, both would pop, sometimes it sounded like a shot gun. I went to stock mufflers on the sliver 99 and the popping when away. The 99 RSV trike had sampson fish tails and had some light popping, also way to loud. Whet to 05 HD RK mufflers, sound great and no popping. Also notice on todays ride that I'm getting better gas milages. I'm going to have to keep an eye on this to see if it continues to get better milage. It seems these motors like a little back pressure.

steamer replied to KIC's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thank god he's not coming over to the 2nd gen side, we'd never be able to live with him. Now get those pastic fantastics on the road where they belong and ride baby ride! -

Come on KIC, don't throw in the towel. God knows we don't want to see you on a 2nd gen. Seriously this is probably not as big a problem as you think it is. Follow the force, let the force guide you. In other word, listen to the advise of your fellow VR's. It will work out. -
3 qts will be fine. It's more then enough oil, the trike doesn't lean over like the bike does, so the pump is alway submerged.
