1st gen throttle cable replacement
Keemez replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are you sure it's the cables causing the disengage? A number of us have had issues with the switch on the clutch lever knocking cruise out. Try holding the lever out against the stop with your fingers and see if that doesn't make a difference. This 30 second test is better than ripping the fairing off. -
I wound up completely removing the dash ductwork because those vents are all but useless. More room to work with in there, less rattles, etc. The only way I could see them being more effective is if you made a much bigger intake scoop under the nose. If I were going to go through the trouble of fabbing up extra plastic work for air management, it surely would be to direct more air toward the radiator and engine block instead. +1 on the leg/shin vents being useful- I've also blocked mine open (with vacuum caps). One of the things I've been thinking about is trying to fab up some ducts for the side panels- something that would allow the shin vents to direct air right into the side panel (like a hood scoop on a car, almost) and blow that cool air over the rear cyl bank and rear header area.

Rebuilding and Modding my 83
Keemez replied to icebrrg3rd's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
WHAT'S THAT YOU SAY???? -
Sounds like some folks need to adapt different ways of obtaining tires. E3 front: $99 to my door (ebay) E3 rear: $125 to my door (ebay) mount & balance: $26 per wheel (off bike, brought in to local stealership) ______________________________ total: $276
-
I've made posts to this effect before but since the discussion is relevant I'll reiterate: My local stealership has been very cooperative about price-matching (or adjusting to some degree) with anything I take into them from boats.net- and they never charge me for shipping when they have to order anything in from a warehouse. If you've got a good relationship with the parts folks at your nearest dealer it's worth asking them about. I'm sure I've saved hundreds in parts costs over the years as a result.

I'll chime in on the generic oring idea. It doesn't work very good. My (VR) elbow has white RTV piled up all around both ends trying to contain the seepage that I could not get under control. And even after "rebuilding" the pump and replacing all orings, etc... I still get that dreaded coolant drip at completely random times.
-
Perhaps not the dumbest but it ranks up there in the top 5 or so. After installing HID and swapping out fuse setups, I couldn't figure out why the fuel pump wouldn't run nor engine crank until I discovered the TCI was on the workbench.

Another alternative is GoldBond medicated powder. Burns at first and then feels delicious. Sorta like IcyHot and the ilk.

PM sent, except I noticed after I sent it that you said OEM. Whoops.

Starter Clutch Removal
Keemez replied to kevin5549's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It's not actually a pressure switch- just a quantity/level float. See this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51164 -
Mine. Send it to me.

R/R mounting ?....
Keemez replied to Dizzle223's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It was/is. It gets warm but not hot. I repeat- I am confident that it gets far cooler and probably more airflow where I have it now than where it was originally. I've had it mounted in this spot for roughly 15000 miles without a hint of a problem. Some of that was riding in mid 90s temperatures too. -
Yup.

A viscous, sticky substance will do the trick. I got a little tub of some stuff called "FuelLube" from my dad that was used in the aviation industry. It's almost like soft candle wax... very tacky and designed to be around engines & their parts. Matter of fact just yesterday I used some to tack a petcock oring in place. Good stuff.

R/R mounting ?....
Keemez replied to Dizzle223's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yeah- I'm fairly confident that there's a lot cooler air flowing over it now than sitting behind the exhaust collector. And a lot MORE airflow too. Yamaha's pretty sharp but they don't always get everything right. -
I tawt I taw a 2nd Gen?

I see. I've never taken the ferry across but I might suggest ditching that plan and ride up "over the top". It'll likely cost you less, take about the same amount of time either way, and there is some spectacular scenery all along the lake and particularly in the vicinity of The Mighty mac ( http://www.mackinacbridge.org/photo-gallery-10/ ). Up to you of course. As for Mwoc itself- I've never been in the actual city so I can't give you any accurate info as to the ghetto-ness level. Maybe 920Shrek1 can chime in on that?

I live right on the border of Kaukauna. Ken's (about 4 miles from me) is fairly reputable if not a bit pricy. They are one of the largest area motorsports dealers- been around for a good many years. Manitowoc should be pretty much like any other medium-smallish city. Is there somebody there that you know?
