Cause of the fuel pump failures
wizard replied to orlean1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My pump on the 06 Venture went sour pretty early in its life. I bought a used pump and now have about 70,000 miles with no trouble. -
To me, it sounds like the fuel pump failing. Next time the bike stalls, take the cover off and feel the pump. If it is hot, or even warm, it has failed and will start working again when it has cooled off. There are other fuel pumps that will work that are much cheaper than the Yamaha pump.

We started getting flu shots about 5 or 6 years ago. Neither of us get sick anymore. Before, everywinter, we would both get sick, worse for her, several trips to the hospital, affecting her asthma. The shots are the best thing for us!

have fun, enjoy the ride.

Susanville is small, has nothing there to do, but the location, riding and the food were great! I think that is why we had a great time. I even met the man who assembled my Venture at a dealership in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes it's good to get away from the big, busy, must have everything right there for you tourist traps.

Yamaha won many design awards for the Sho motor in the Ford Taurus.

When was the last West Coast Venture ride? I think it was to Pismo Beach. Been quite a while ago. All I can remember, it was totally awesome. Miss those rides. The people were like no others in this world. We would defiantly make time for it. We don't see any Ventures where we ride!

Help? Front Fork Air Pressure
wizard replied to V4ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I set the pressure on the front at 7 lbs, the rear at 40 lbs, while on the lift. Loaded the bike, added the wife and have put about 1200 miles on the bike. Rides great! When I added the air to the front, I found a differance of 2 lbs between the forks. Making them balanced improved the handling bigtime! Slow turns, as will as fast sweepers are much more stable, no more feeling like the bike had a hinge in the frame. Oh yeah, I have not heard a pop from the air bags yet. -
I stopped using Sea Foam when they raised the price. I believe its B-2 Chemtool I'm using now.

I'm on my second BF Goodrich TA radial, size 155/80/15. I'm very happy with the mileage I'm getting with it. After the breakin, I keep the air pressure at 28 1/2 lbs riding both 1 and 2 up packed for a week. Its great not having to replace the tire while touring. Riding to Las Vegas and back at 85 mph, we had no issues at all. It seems to me that the 28 1/2 psi gives me the best ride and mileage.

Help? Front Fork Air Pressure
wizard replied to V4ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
It is easier to set the pressure while the bike sits on the ground, but it sounds like the pressure should be set while the bike is on the lift and no weight on the wheel. I would imagine that the rear should also be set with no weight on it. I'm going to give it a try with no weight on the bike, on the lift. I will let you know if anything pops on the 1st dip I hit. -
Help? Front Fork Air Pressure
wizard replied to V4ME's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
When adding the air to the forks, should the bike be on a lift or should it be on the ground? If on the ground, should one be sitting on the bike to pump up the pressure to 7 lbs? -
2006 venture dies while running 70-75

When my pump failed, it felt like electrical issue, just like a kill switch. -
Is the stratoliner deluxe water cooled?

My OEM tool broke on my next to last valve. I sent it back, no questions asked and it was replaced. There really is a lot of force placed on that tool, and it broke at the thinnest part. It held the valve open while I replaced the shim, but it would not began to open the next valve, missing the thin part.

Some bikes are too loud, some are too quiet. I like to hear my bike, love the sound of the Bubs. I have never liked the sound of drilled out pipes, do it right.

I ran Metzlers at 41 psi and got less than 8000 miles. They were the best milage tire for motorcycles I have tried. The Continental 2 adds state they will give twice the milage of the Metzlers. When my car tire wears, I will probably try them. We'll see. I do not know how you guys get that kinda milage on a Metzler, I have even read on these blogs of guys getting over 20000 miles. If I did, I'd still be on a Metzler.

I run a car tire because I got tired of replacing while in the middle of a long tour. It is cheaper than a motorcycle tire, but that is not my reason for running one. One cross country ride and the rear tire would be shot.

I can't imagine riding Death Valley in the summer. It's too damned hot. Early spring is the best time to ride. Its hot, but not like the summer.

R1 brake upgrade results
wizard replied to Big_Iz's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
hey Big_Iz, why did you have to fight the chain? Did you remove the cams to make the adjustments to the shims? -
I have used the string plugs on both front and rear tires, different bikes over the years. I've never had a failure, and I ride the tires till the cord can be seen under the rubber. I switched to a car tire on the rear of this bike, and since then I have not had to use the kit. Something to be said for my ability to avoid nails with it.

I'm running a BF Goodrich TA radial on the rear with 29 lbs psi, 2 up, full sidebags and trunk packed, with a Metzler bias on the front. On the way to the river run in Laughlin we were running 90 mph just keeping up with the traffic. Our Road Captain, on a 2006 Road King got caught up in a tank slapper in the sweeping turn from Barstow to hwy 15 at just over 100 mph. I had no issues, but I don't make any sudden changes, just trying to keep everything smooth. After this, we kept the speed at 90. On the way back, we kept the speeds at a relaxed 75 to 80. No issues at all. The Road Captain will not run anything but tires recommended by Harley. I'm very happy with the car tire, but I may try the new Commanders next, promising double the milage of a Metzler. I've probably got another 20000 miles left on the TA radial, so I have plenty of time to see what others say about the Commanders.

If I recall correctly, it's a locking pin that needs to be removed for disassembly.
