Information about Fuel Reformulation and Carb Fouling
wizard replied to V7Goose's topic in General Tech Talk
The first time I used this 10% ethanol was on the way back from Sturgis in Idaho. My mileage went to hell and the bike lacked power. What kinda of savings does this ethanol offer?- 8 replies

We just got back from Sturgis today, and like you, the Tar Strips in Wyoming were the worst. The Venture didn't mind them in the other states, but Wyoming, Oh my gawd!
-
We should arrive in Deadwood Sunday afternoon. We'll look for anyone riding Ventures, maybe it'll be you guys! I'll be the one with a beard, wearing Levi's and a black tee-shirt!

Seems kinda odd that some feel like the SOB should have been left alone. I'm thinking that way too many people think that they are not responsible for their actions. I chased a SOB that came Thur my neighborhood at over 50 mph, with kids playing in the street. He never tried to slow down, but swerved around them. I followed him to his house when he pulled a gun from the tool chest in the back of his truck. I asked him if he was going to shoot me for telling him the error of his ways, then his kids came out of the house. He promised me that he would never do it again. I also promised him that he would never get away with it again. I think its great you made him responsible again, you might have just saved someone else's life!

If it only barely runs at idle and only with the choke pulled completely, and you did not hear the fuel pump tick, take the left side cover off, just below the seat, and touch the fuel pump. If it's hot, let it cool down, than try it again. My pump would fail like that. The bike will run without a pump, but you must bypass it completely. Run your fuel line from the petcock directly to the carbs. It seemed that the pump would only fail when starting the bike. It would run until the carbs were dry, just enough to be about a mile from the house.

Robin and I are riding out. Leaving early Friday morning to try to beat the heat crossing Nevada. 1st night will be in Beaver, Utah.

Oh, come on now. That's like saying it looks too much like a motorcycle.

If you're looking to get your bike running right away, without a pump, here is a discussion I had with Mike G in SC, on this forum; My fuel pump died last week (2006 RSTD 53k miles). Will be replaced under warranty. But while I wait,,, I got to ride. Yes you can bypass the filter/pump and gravity feed, and do this in 15 minutes. So, pull the seat, pull the line going from tank to the fuel filter, and relocate it to the carburetor input. I did have to remove the seat tank bolt to be able to lift the tank enough to get a needle nose on the clamp to the carb line. With this, I did disconnect power to the fuel pump, as it was trying to spit some remaining fuel. I also spent $5 and put an in-line filter, 3" hose and two clamps. I put it right off the petcock. When the shop replaces it this week, they can just put it back together seeing how I didn't do any chop work. Be sure you don't have loose gas dripping from any unhooked hoses. So you know, the fuel pump & filter are NOT under the tank, found that out. The pump is in the left side cover by the fuse box, it's electrical plug is right under the fuse box. And the filter is just in front of the battery. I've been riding it on gravity feed for a few days now, and yes, keeping the fuel level above 1/4 tank. I don't think I would know the difference. PS: the shop said Yamaha sells this Mitsubishi part for $250,,, thanks for the 5 year warranty. It's really nice to know you can do this in a pinch. Next time you pull the seat you may want to look at the hoses, wiggle the one from the tank so you know where it is. Then if you are out in the boonies, with just regular tools you can drive off with out the pump.

Yep! you answered my questions. I will be putting a radial tire up front in a little bit. I figure I have one good ride on my front Metzler left before I hit the wear bars. Thanks. Leonard

Hi Gregg, so the handling improved with the Avon cobra radial 150/80/19 on the front? How does it compare in profile and width with the stock bias ply tire. I know you haven't had it long enough to judge the mileage you might get, but why did you purchase the Avon tire? Is it known as a high mileage tire? I really like the idea of putting a radial tire on the front.

Ok, how do you know? -
Randy, I agree with you, it won't tell you the whole story, but it will let you know if they are running to tight. From reading the other posts on the Venture, it seems that the valves will tighten up, not get looser. On my Triumph, with the shim over cup, my valves got looser, but I have only had to adjust them once in 50,000 miles. I just looked for a guide to adjustments on this website, but am unable to locate anything, other than to pay $200.00 to have a dealer check them, which I would never do. And I really do not think the motor needs to be pulled to replace the shims.

Stevel, I read on another website that checking your compression is a good indication of your valve clearances, a way to save pulling the covers off of your motor. He said that if the compression was within spec., no adjustment is necessary. It was stated that if the valves were in spec. and the compression was off, it might be a carbon build up on the rings that could be removed by a yamaha product added to the gas, I would suspect something like the Seafoam everyone here recommends. I believe that everyone on this website understands the value of valve adjustments, but I have never seen a write up of the procedure on this site. I just read your post and saw that nobody answered your question. I hope this helps.

I have heard that if you do go back, something shrivels up and falls off your body. No other explanations were given.

Bubs verses Road King pipes.. Which is loader?
wizard replied to Reaney in NH's topic in Watering Hole
I'm not sure about the Bubs' for the Venture, but on the other bikes I have I can repack em and change the sound level. -
Arizona is a great ride! Their roads are very well maintained and there is no helmet law. I forget how nice it is to ride without one until I cross into Arizona. Its nice to be able to just jump on the bike and ride!

Has your fuel pump ever failed?
wizard replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Great! Thanks for the reply. I was just going to bypass the pump with a loop of fuel line, the next time it failed, but your way is more direct! Its good to know I won't be stuck on the road with a burnt up fuel pump! -
Has your fuel pump ever failed?
wizard replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ok, I've got about 50,000 miles on my Venture, and my fuel pump failed today. I pulled the cover off the side and the pump was so hot I couldn't touch it. After it cooled a bit I pulled it out and removed the out fuel line, keyed it on and it would only burp a bit. I sat on the side of the road and let it cool off, then keyed it on again and tapped it with the wrench and it started working again. The bike ran fine the rest of the day and at the end of the ride, I pulled the cover off again and the pump was cool to the touch. Has anyone on this site rebuilt a fuel pump? Will this bike run without one, say if you just bypassed the pump and tied the fuel lines together? Maybe even just used a generic pump to get home? -
I've run the Metzler Marathon since they came out and never had a problem. I'm still running the Metzlers on my other bikes, but I switched to a BF Goodrich radial tire on the back of my Venture.

Wow! Are you able to work in there?
