Better Venture / Goldwing Comparision for your Specific year
GolfVenture replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
I liked the handling of the 80 Wing except the draging of the center kick stand (I think). It dragged something both sides taking the sweeping corners going into Mt Rainier National Park to Paradise. I also liked the smoothness of the Wing better than my 89 Venture. But I also like the little bit of the thump, thump one can feel from the Venture during low speed accerlation. -
I think that a more fun and fair comparison should be more apples to apples. Give your experience and opinion for your specific year. I purchased a new 80 Goldwing and love it. I did not like the other competitor’s models at all if they actually had a competitor. I think that the only competitor was the BMW and that time I think BMW was the sport touring standard. BMW just was too expensive for me; also I really did not like the BMWs lines. Just one complaint and that is the 80 Goldwings cornering capabilities. I’m no hot dog but one main fun part of motorcycling was cornering. The cornering ability of the 80 Goldwing caught me my surprised, after the purchase. The 80 Goldwing was my 1st Honda for previously I owned a small 1969 90cc Kawasaki then a 1974 Yamaha TX500 then a 1974 Yamaha YZ125. So I did not have a Honda preference. I sold my 80 Goldwing for raising a family. 27 years later I got the Touring Bike itch with some nostalgic feelings. I wanted my 80 Goldwing back for nostalgic reasons and wanted to own a collectable. It was kind of like wanting to have your 57 Chev back. I found some beautiful 80 Goldwings, however in my search, the Yamaha Venture surfaced. I recalled in 83 when the Venture was introduced and Wow I wanted one even though I was selling my 80 Goldwing. I toss and turned between the 80’s Goldwing and the Venture MKI or MKII. Did a lot of soul searching and settled on the MKII. Like make vehicles history the design goes through some ugly years. Like the Mustang, some of the Mustang’s years were butt ugly. The Goldwing outwardly design changed a lot between 1980 and 1993 and I did not like most of those years design. I’m limiting to 1980 thru 1993 for my purchased, for the MKI and MKII looks are really similar, and in my pocket books range. The MKII got most of the points. I personally liked its design better than the Goldwings, but the Goldwings reverse weighted in very heavily. Then the Goldwings cornering ability came into play. Venture was more top heavy, The engine size really was not a factor for the 80 Wings 1100cc was plenty for me. I would have given the MKI more consideration but the famous 2nd rear issue really done it in. Also the Goldwings seems to be in general more expensive than the Venture in similar condition. Oh I also did like the Wings plastic for the sole purpose when cleaning the bike, But then the plastics took away from the motorcycle looks. So would I prefer my 89 Venture to a Goldwing up to 1993. The Venture won. Now today if I were to buy a new bike and I could afford it. The choice would be between the BMW and the Goldwing and without any test drives yet I’m leaning to the Goldwing. Maybe I should just ride into the BMW and Honda dealer for a test drive. Then maybe I better not, For what I don’t know and experience won’t hurt me. Todays Venture would not even be in the selection. I’ve heard many talk about the riding comfort. I’ve never really had an issue with comfort for I seem to adapt to the Bikes configuration. So there, you have my apple to apple comparision. What is your apple to apple comparision?

If you could trade your Venture for a Goldwing

I'd smile and say, Maybe when Metric Bikes are no longer made. -
I don't normally drain the tank eithor, however I've read & heard that water settles to the bottom and when one rides on the normal tank and not reserve that the tank can rust from water at the bottom over the years. Well if others dont drain their tanks maybe I won't eithor. I do not see any solder on the brass tube and it will take some pressure to get it all the way in.

Ok so being that my New2Me 91 VR has only 6700 miles, I decided to drain the gas tank. Being that I had a heck of time doing that with my 89VR at the fuel filter, I decided it would be easier to do it at the Fuel Off/On switch on my 91VR. So I removed the hose clamp and then broke some of the seal from the rubber to the brass fitting, the hose would not come off. So I pried and pried at the hose until it finally came out. Well what came out was the brass fitting from the fuel Off/No switch. With some more digging the brass fitting finally broke loose from the hose. Well on the brass fitting there were some hose particles. Which means that I will need to clip off the end of the hose where the pieces of hose came off. I took some steel wool and got the rubber off the brass fitting. I drained the tank by using a 2 ft long fuel line and put it over the one end of the brass fitting and then gently placed the other end back into the fuel Off/On switch. Then drained the gas into the can. So now I need to get the brass fitting back into the Fuel Off/On switch. Now all the while draining the tank I only pushed and held the brass fitting into the Fuel switch and not a single drop of fuel leaked from the brass fitting. The brass fitting only went in a little bit and has more room to go into the fuel switch. My though is that I should be able to use some permatex gasket sealer (used on fuel sending units) and then press it all the way back into the fuel Off/On switch. So my question is, does my fix seem workable, or is there a better fix?

I have some under the kitchen cabinette lighting. It has one of those touch sensor things that increase the light 3 brightness then off. Its about 2 to 3 years old and is used alot for it really brightens up the kitchen counters. One day my wife went to put it on and the touch switch flashed/sparked then nothing after that. SoI took about the controller circuit board and found a blown fuse. I unsoldier the fuse and then went looking for a 3amp 250 volt glass fuse (like an auto glass fuse). Places do have the fuse but I need one with fuseable wires at the end of the fuse so I can soldier it to the circuit board. None at Radio Shack. None at Fry's Electronic. So I cliped off one end of the wire off the old fuse and tried to soldier it to the new fuse. no luck the soldier won't stick to the metal end of the fuse. So then I went looking for a singel fuse holder that I could soldier. No luck. So I'm thinking, what if I bought an auto inline fuse and soldier it and found a place to tuck the fuse holder. Does anyone see any reason why that wouldn't work or be unsafe? Next I'll need to find a touch sensor switch for I'm guessing that the touch switch shorted out causing the fuse to blow.

I purchased my 89VR (26500 miles now) a little over a year ago and the previous owner said the cruise control was made inoperable at the shop because he heard of a friend that got in an accident due to using the cruise control, so he said. I have no reason not to believe the reason. I would like to make it useable again. I share this thinking that one may proceed in a different manor than if it just malfunctioned. Your suggestions would be helpful if I could receive help from the simple to the more complex. On the road I press the cruise button on and it lights up green. Then I set the cruise and nothing. I have used the cruise on a 91VR, so I have some operation knowledge. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

I acturally like the H/T shifter. Its just that there is a lot more mechanical shifting noise and a definate clunk when going into gears. Others who like floorboards, does your product a lot of mechanical noise?

I took the floorboards of my 89 VR and definately noticed that the shifting mechanics were much smoother and quiters. I put the floorboards on my 91 VR. Does anyone know why or is there a way to adjust the shifting with floorboards.

It is needed to work the 4 way flashers and turn signals. I know, for my 4 way flashers and turn signals stoped working and with the help of a few members we were able to isolate the defective part. Replacing the 41R-71 relay fixed my problem. I'm looking to pick up an extra one to carry and a member has an 84 parting out. Mine in the 89 VR is located behind the headlight in the upper cavity on a relay bar. He pulled what I thought would be the 41R-71 relay but is was not. According to the dealers parts drawing the 84 and the 89 are the exact same part. Infact I think most years of the MKI and MKII are the same part.

I needing to locate longer bolts that go thru the bottom of the side bag to accomodiate the spacer and then the washer & nut. I went to McLendons Hardware and they have items that most hardward stores do not carry. They do have the longer bolts in metrics however because there is a nut welded for the original bolt the longer bolt needs to have more threads towards the nut head and these do not. What have others with MKIIs installing Markland hitch done. I will try Home Depot and Lowes tomorrow but I'm not too hopeful.

One could hang the 8th one above the single right rear red on. Then if one needed more at the very top row, one could replace the 2 long ones on each sides and replace each one with two of the small ones making it a total of 10 switches. These were taken off my 89, and just placed on my 91 VR, but not fully installed just placed for looks. Because I realized that I would need to remove them all when the time comes to install progressive springs. Well with the purchase of the recent 91 VR I'm going to wait till I install the progressive springs this winter on the 91 VR then install the switches afterwards.

Spraying from just a spray can. Already done. Attached a picture, looks really good. Will give it another spray in the morning. My NewToMe 91 VR looks like new (6700 miles) and the thought of putting on rusty and old painted hitch hardware would bother me so I striped it all to bear metal. I will soon post pictures of my NewToMe 91 VR. It is drying with a hard shine. Does anyone still think I should spray with clear. If so what kind of clear?

Ok, I've been feeling a bit guility not sharing my switch installation for it does not seem as good as those that has posted in this posting and other posting that I've read. I always felt that it would get readers to rub their chins with a hmmmm... or a raised eye brow. And there are probably reasons why. Oh well here is the attachment, don't laugh or maybe I should say have a good laugh.

Good to read that I made a good guess. I just returned from Wall Mart and saw several Rustoleum options. I ended up selecting Rustoleum "Hammerite". Protects from rust, A hard finish and resists scratches. Going to go out and clean the hitch hardware and put on the 1st coat.

Just my luck a gallon is not shipable.

I had farmers some 30 years ago. At that time only a few auto body companies would work with Farmers so you had to go to one of their recommended body shops. In my 1st auto accident they did a crappy job on repairing my 1 month old Chev Luv. Never gone back to them for any Insurance needs.

I just finished stripping the paint off the markland hitch mounting hardware and now ready to paint it. My plan is to use black Rustoleum, it there something better, that one can recommend?

Great, I understand the diagram and thanks for the pdf also.

700 miles. Worked to much, testing the 787 Dreamliner took most of my weekend. Then my daughter got married, also summer riding weather came late. Maybe a better year in 2012.

Ok on the PTT switch. Being that I plan on putting the PTT switch on a relay, can I install a 2nd switch using the same relay to the same lights for longer use?
