  1. I recently put on Roto Covers. Its a long story but here is my issue.

With both brake calipars off and the Roto Covers installed and the Axle bolt tighten to 75 Ft Lbs, the front wheel spins freely. The wheel goes around several times with a decent spin of the wheel.

On by adding just the left calipars on, the wheel might spin maybe 1/2 turn.

With both calipars on the wheel spon about 1/3 of a turn.

I thought I would go for a ride and do the same spin test. It now spins about 3/4 of a turn.

How freely does your front wheel spin?

Any suggestion as to how I might make mine spin more freely.

  2. I put on the new milled spacer. He made it out of harden stainless steel. It fit perfect, and worked perfectly. Got it all together and with 75 ft lbs the front wheel spun freely.

Now I then put on the left calipar and it seems to be draging then I put the right calipar and it drug some more.

I figure I'd take it for a short ride. The brakes loosen up some. Th Front wheel still does not spin freely. Think I will start a new thread asking presenting the senerio.

  3. So Hinshaw in Auburn Wa had Honda Demo day. So a friend (85 Goldwing) and I (91 MKII) rode out and I test rode a 2012 Wing.

The last time I was on a Wing was my 1980 (Bought New) then sold in 83 and went to raise a family.

The 2012 Wing is all that I've read and heard about.

Smooth, Smooth, Smooth. I had it in 5th and took it down to 5 mph and throttled it and it was stlll smooth.

All Power, Power, Power. Wow lots of torque.

Agle and nimble, nimble, nimble. Very responsive to curves and any little push of the handle bar.

Balance, Balance, Balance. I couldn't believe that at a stop light, I was sitting on one of the heavest production touring if not the heavest and I was tossing the Wing left and right with easy. With a little more time on the Wing, I think I could make most complete stops without my foot ever leaving the foot pegs. Slow speed crawls are so effortless.

When I first sat on the Wing. It seemed like I was sitting on top of the Wing and I'm only 5 ft 8 inchs. Everything seemed like I was looking down on it. But it took only a few miles before I quickly adjusted to the Wings sitting and gage position.

It was something that I been wanting to do for many years. So now I can put it to rest.

Would I trade my 91 MKII for it......no...

The Wing is Smoother, but so is the MKII. I can ride my MKII 500 miles in a good day and do the vibration test. Which is to touch some stationary object with my hands and my hands does not zing.

The Wing has more power. Well that is a given 1300 vs 1800. My VR MKII can get up and really go also.

I think the Wing seems to responds quicker and could be more manuverable. But the question is how much more. Like I said I think, but not real sure.

The Wing definately seems to have it hands down on balance at the stop light, but then the Wing had foot pegs and my VR had floor boards. Not a real big issue for I'm almost flat footed on my VR with Floor boards and as soon as I get my seat back from Rick Butler I should be flat footed for the seat will be lowered a little over 1 inch.

I do miss the smooth ride that the stock OEM springs provided on my VR when on ruffer roads. I just installed Progressive. So I really can't compare the spring acton between my VR and the Wing, but the Wing sailed over the bumps.

After getting back on my VR, I prefer the seat position of my VR for I feel like I sit in the VR rather sitting on top of the Wing. All the gages on my VR are out in front which I prefer for viewing. I also like the way the VR engine thumps at low speeds a bit more like a typical m/c then really smooths out as one gets going.

I also like the sound of the VR more when I get on the engine, the VR has a really nice throaty sound.

The Wing with all that plastic almost seems to be in a slightly different catagory than a motorcycle. I like to see more of the bikes engine and stuff. The VR MKII seems to have the right balance. I'm always looking back at my Shiny VR as I'm walking away from it.

The other think is that as my 21 year old VR, just gets better with each aging year like a nice classic car. While any new 2012 bike after the 1st year new newess is over then its just a used m/c with years of payments to come. Its kind of like for me I'm getting ready in a couple of years for a brand new car. My plan is to buy a nicely reconditioned 65 GTO rather than buying a brand new car. So I'm kind of particial to an older vehicle reconditioned that a brand new vehicle.

Well there you have it. I'm glad I got the test ride out of my system. My VR pass the test for I still prefer the VR.

  4. Trying to install my front fender guard. My first instinct is that the guard mounts go between the fender mounts and the tire.

    Doesn't seem to fit.

I wouldn't think it goes between the forks and the fender would it. That would mean that the fender mounts would need to be bent out and undue stress would break it.

I'll go try it again inbetween the fender mounts and the tire.

Will be back to read suggestions soon.

  5. Sounds like joboo's suggestion is the way to go being that you rebuilt your carbs.

On my 89 VR, last spring I had one carb continually leak fuel out the over flow. Opening the overflow screw did not help. Taping on the carb did not help. And I had not rebuilted my carbs.

I ended up removing the air cleaner box and some hoses so I could get to all 4 carbs vertically. Being that I have small hands and long thin fingers, I was able to unscrew the 4 drain bowel bolts so to see what came out 1 at a time and flushed more fuel into each bowel.

None of that helped. Lastly I took a wire and made a long hook. The wire was flexable so it would bend with a lttle pressure. I inserted the wire into into the drain bowel and after a while I was able to find and raise the float up and the let it drop down, several times, then flushed more fuel thru it.

Put it all back together and bingo it fixed the problem.

In order to get a couple of the drain bolts back on, I had to use a long single strand wire and looped the end over just under the head bolt. Then lowered the bolt so I could then push the bolt into the hole and soon was able make enough of a turn for the threads to catch. Then pulled out the single strand wire.

  6. The thing is she recalls her ride 30 years ago on the 80 Goldwing with a Vetter Faring that she only had to lean a little left or right to view just to the right or left of my helmet at 1:30 or 10:30 O Clock position to get a fair forward view. Butler said that he can lower the driver a good inch. So I'm thinking if I can be lowered say 1 1/2 inches and I could put say a gel pad passenger seat on top of a bead passenger seat that would be good for another 1 1/2 inch for a total of 3 inches and that would do the trick.

In many pictures I see the passenger head just a bit higher than the drivers head. My wifes head is actually even or maybe a bit lower. I hope the above plan will give her enought height yet still under the buffering.

I like the airplane neck cushion idea. Will have to explore that a bit.

  7. I'm still trying to convince my wife to ride to Vegas and back.

I've sent my seat to Butler for the customization, and to lower my seat so I'm flat footed with the floorboards and to give her a little more height forward view.

Planning on getting her an extra boost in the back seat also for more forward view.

Right now she says her eyes are planted right in the center of the back of my helmet and she is always turning her head way left or way right. Getting neck strain in just a ride less than 60 minutes.

Maybe a few books on CD.

    Stopping at upgraded overnight stays.

A visit to our granddaughter both down and back.

Also reshape the inners of her helmet to relieve stress points.

Oh ya, having my machinist Goldwing buddy mill a set of passenger arm rests.

Maybe I can find a coffee holder with Starbucks imprinted on it.

A luggage rack for her suit case.

    Lastly a spending budget.

There is just one more thing. If I could just figure out a way to gently lock her helmet in place with some flexibility. She has recalled back in our youthful days on my 80 Goldwing that she sometimes would like to take a nap. I think that would do the trick.

So I'm engaging the group for some creative solutions for the helmet lock. Humorous solutions like getting a new wife isn't going to work. I love what I have and am afraid what I'd get on a trade in. I don't think I could out live the break in period.

So put on your creative thinking hats.

  8. I won't ever be able to get Rachel back in a helocopter again. I confinced her in Hawaii back some 10 years ago. She could not keep it down.

But I think the ride up the Colorado River is do able.

I've sent my seat to Butler for the customization, and to lower my seat so I'm flat footed with the floorboards and to give her a little more height forward view and planning on getting her an extra boost in the back seat also. Maybe a few books on CD. Stopping at upgraded overnight stays, and a visit to our granddaughter both down and back. Aslo reshape the inners of her helmet. Oh ya, arm rest with a coffee holder, and a luggage rack for her suit case, all this to get her to agree to travel vis the VR. Then a shopping spending allowance.

If I could just figure out a way to gently lock her helmet in place, I think that would do the trick. I better call in the troops and start a new tread for any ideas on this one.

This would be the trip of my riding life.

  9. Going to Vegas late June 2012 for 12 full days. Besides Gambleing and the Shows I plan to so some sites.

    Yosemite Nat Park

    USAF Thunderbird

    Area 51

    Grand Canyon

    Hoover Dam

    Death Valley

Anyone recommend anything else. Bike trip maybe back on agian rather than flying.

  10. Yes it is an honor. My first was a Hospitally Misson in helping a young Veteran's Widow move. My 2nd just a Flag Line at the Church, and most recently this last weekend did a KSU. Being such a rookie I learn that KSU meant Kick Stand Up. We rode to the church in a group. It was for a young US Marine who was on his last mission in Afgan, and he had only 1 month left before he was to get out.

It was a very tough one for my wife and I, for my son, Tye, Army SF, got his orders for his 4th tour to Afgan and when he returns, he plans to exit after 10 year. I take him to Fort Lewis this Wednesday.

  11. Do this BEFORE removing the spark plugs. Don't ask me how I know this (didn't learn this on the Venture) :whistling:

    Jeff

I could take that one step farther and that is to use a mirror to see if the pressured air got all the stuff out.

I was replacing my plugs this winter and on one plug I could not get the plug socket firmly onto the spark plug, After several tries I took a special mirror on a telescope antenna and with the right contortion of my neck I saw a metal clip that got logged beyond the nut portion of the spark plug. I must have dropped it while doing some additional wiring of some accessories and it made it way there, probabaly as the bike was vibrating on a few rides. It took a small hook to get it to lodge between the cylinider wall and the nut portion of the spark plug. Then with a long needle nose plyer I was able to get a firm hold of the connector to force it out.

Had it not been for having so much problem in getting the plug socket unto the spark plug, the conector could have fallen into the cyliinder had I was able to get the spark plug out.

  12. So .062 is 1/2 of .125. Maybe instead of 2 times the width of 1 roto cover, only a single width of the rotor cover should have been taken off.

Anyone understand why only 1 width of the roto cover shold have been taken off?

So I was thinking about this as I was driving to my machinest friend and it just hit me. Probably the reason the replacement spacer is only 1/16 or .0625 shorter than the OEM spacer is for the exact reason to keep the rotor cover from rubbing against the bolt heads that holds the actual rotor unto the wheel assembly.

My machinest friend made a brilliant suggestion and that is rather than milling a washer 1/16 thick, he is going to just mill a new spacer length of .85 in lengh for the collar is removeable. What a simple solution when you have the right equiptment.

  13. If .912 is the origional spacer and .85 is the replacement spacer, then the difference is .062

He said he took of 1/8 or .125 from the origional spacer.

    hmm......

Well I'll be taking the shorten spacer to him today for measurement to subtract from the .85 to mill the additional spacer needed.

    Will report back my findings.

So .062 is 1/2 of .125. Maybe instead of 2 times the width of 1 roto cover, only a single width of the rotor cover should have been taken off.

Anyone understand why only 1 width of the roto cover shold have been taken off?

  14. If you need measurement of the spacer, I have a NOS set that I havent installed on my 89 VR yet and would be happy to measure the spacer for you. I had posted the instructions that come with the rotor covers in an earlier post, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66503, I hope this helps.

    Rick F.

That would be very helpful in milling the correct size. If you could the sooner the better for my spacers are being milled today.

Thank you for both the measurement and the installation instructions.

  15. Just received a change in the Venture Patch with a New Font....It Brings tears to my eyes.

All those who placed orders on the last thread "Venture Patch Order 4/20/12" will be receiving this new patch.

So those that placed their order on that last thread DO NOT need to place order on this thread UNLESS you want to order more. If you want to order more, please place just the ADDITIONAL amount on this new tread , with the word "ADDITIONAL" so I know to combine the two orders.

    Sizes Available:

    3 1/2

    5 3/4

    7
