  1. When I was installing a digital amp meter I read one members reason to installing the meter directly to the battery by passing the ignition key. His reason was so he could check the meter reading occasionally during the non riding season, incase the battery was not charging he could get a replacement.

Well I did that also, but during yesterday's ride I came across another good reason. Rode for an hour and all was fine.

Then I noticed that my tack needle was flipping back and forth. Hmmm I thought a tack cable, no it has got to me an electronic gage.

Then I noticed that my amp meter was reading 12.4 so I shut my driving lights off. Went to 12.6. Now during the 1st hour I noticed that with out the driving lights my amp reading was 14.1 and with my driving lights it was 13.8. Also the OEM volt gave was down also.

Soon I was feeling the engine slightly cutting out but not too bad. I was about 5 miles from the next town.

The temp gage was fine. So I figured I would try to make it into town rather than making an emergency stop and take a chance the engine would die and then not get it started again.

Got into town and the slower my speed the rougher the engine ran. came about 20 feet from the parking spot and all electric went out and engine died.

Scratch my head. Now let me see, last night I added driving lights, rotor lights, front fender lights, and rear trunk guard lights, and the amp gage. Used relay for the driving lights, all the other lights were LEDs except the light that goes around the circumference of the roto, so I did not use relay for them. Used a lighted switch for all. 1 for amp meter, 1 for driving lights and one for all the other lights together.

So after calling some members it was thought that the battery might have just totally died. But the strange thing was that the amp meter keep showing 12.5. The 12.5 meant the battery is still good. So I went about check al the fuses, but the key thing was that everything except the amp meter was dead.

So then found the main fuse, and it was good.

Then there it was. I noticed that the positive terminal screw was loose. The main positive battery cable came off. Now how could that be. Being in a hurry to finish the accessories add ones I missed the hole in the cable and so the cable was wedged on tight. So after about 1 hour ride the cable came loose thus causing the tack fluctuate, the engine to miss, the battery to drain. As long as I was moving a 50 mph the shaking kept the cable bumping again the positive terminal/ When I came to a almost stop the cable was no longer being shaken against the terminal and thus a dead engine.

So had I not connected the amp meter directly to the battery, I probably would have tired to locate a Wal-Mart for a new battery.

The rest of the ride around Hoods Canel was marvelous. Never rode it before.

An after thought, maybe I should carry one of the those hugh main fuses. Under what situation would one of those blow? It looked like it might be a 50 amp to 100 amp fuse, just guessing.

  2. I was adding some acessories and needed to move some wires around near the battery, when this one broke off. The wire comes from the accessory side of the OEM fuse box and goes into what looks like and EOM retangular male/female plug and the single wire is white with a red stripe. The broken piece fell down and I've not been able to get it out yet.

The wire from the Accessory side of the fuse box to the connector was spliced and a couple of what looked like a 2 inline resistors were added. the thin wire that connected the two inline resistor broke.

The added resistor could not be OEM for it was crimped on.

Anyone have any ideas as to why these 2 Resistors were added.

And then maybe I don't need it?

  3. Any Washington riders know of a unique restaurant experience in Ellensburg Wa. Looking for something that has a unique and interesting decor for conversation. Variety of food average or better, not interested in expensive foods but rather tasty.

My wife and I are planning a day's ride this Sunday. Supposed to be mostly sunny. in the mids 60s.

    Starting out from Buckley, Wa

    To Enumclaw

    Chinook Pass (Beautiful Views)

    Tipsoo lake (Nice Twisty Roads)

    Take a few pictures

Top of Chinook Pass ( More pictures)

    Long Canyon Road Beautiful

    Naches

    Yakima

Hwy 821 - This is an increable road that litterly follows the Yakima River bend for bend.

Just map Ellensburg Wa to Yakima Wa.

It will route you on hwy 82

Then drag the route in the middle to the river just to the left.

    Thats hwy 821.

    Eat in Ellensburg

    Return trip

    Follow route back to Naches

Hwy 12 all the way to Packwood

    Along the Cowlitz River

    Past Rimrock Lake

    Top of White Pass

    At Packwood

Take Skate Creek Road to (map Packwood Wa to Elbe Wa)

Used to be a dirt service road now paved. (nice 20 + mile ride)

Maybe Dinner at Copper Creek Inn.

I usually pull off the road Near Alder Lake State park

To allow the cars ahead of me a few minutes.

When the next set of cars comes around the sweeping corner

I quickly take off for the next few miles of great short quick twisties along the Canyon.

And with no cars ahead of me, hopefully. I think there is only one side road

Where a car could get in front of me.

Then Home thru Eatonville, Graham, Orting, South Prairie, Buckley.

    Should be about 335 miles.

Get home just probably after the sun set.

Get to try out some of my new lights.

I plan on taking my Drift HD170 and film the best parts on a 32 gig card.

Hopefully I can operate the Stop and Record on the remote with my gloves on.

    Anyone interested let me know.

  4. Is Oiled cooled engines have similar life expectancy as water cooled engines.

Know any draw backs to oil cooled engines.

Just doing some research for my son who is looking at purchasing a Ducati when he returns from his Deployment.

  5. Early this morning, took my son Tye to Fort Lewis, WA to deploy with his Army SF team. They are in the air now via Commericial Airline and so in about 2 or 3 days he will arrive in Afgan.

Yesterday Tye and I talked about the Ducati he wants to get when he returns. He likes the Green one but probably will get the red one. I suggested that he get one like the yellow one. Any bit of plastic helps the battle against the forces of Mother Nature. Plus a bit easier on the cleaning. Need I mentioned that his old Dad needs some wind protection. I tool him that the power band of the 1000cc one would be such a ride. I may have to toss in some $s to persuade him to get the larger cc.

I've add some pictures so to help put a face to.

He is to join the other half of his team already there. He said that the team's Taliban body count has already past the 300 mark for 2012

I reinforced to him that there is nothing back home with family for Friends issues that needs his attention for most of it is all 1st World problems compared to what he will be dealing with.

The picture of the See No Evil , Speak No Evil and Hear No Evil, well that was in my Hospital recover room from my 4 Way By Pass Operation. He said way to go Dad, Great timing. He got to come home from his 3rd Afgan tour for a week. It cost him a pretty penny for air fare but the break was nice.

Gave him a hand shake and a hug and said Good Hunting and God Speed with a Safe and Quick Return.

  6. I've mounted 3 relays in the right side faring pocket of my MKII. I do not know if the MKIs are the same but the Rad over flow is in there.

Remove the pocket cover and on the left (inside) edge at the top there is a long nice verticle edge about the width of the relay.

Also on the same verticle side down lower just over 1/2 the way towards the rear there is an inch long open slot for wires to go through.

If you need more openings then on the same verticle side just over 1/2 up towards the front there is a large round groumlet where you probably can sneek a few wires through

Just make sure the relay position do not interfere with the cover mounting screws.
