I've plugged tons of auto tires and never had an issue. I have never had to plug a motorcycle tire but I carry a kit. I have no problem with the concept of a plug as a permanent repair. I run slime or something much like it in the front tire and don't have even a hint that it may be out of balance. I'd put it in the rear but they put balancing beads in when they installed the tire and I don't think they would play well with slime.

Gravel is pretty much assured to freak out a passenger since there will be lots of movement that is abrupt, unexpected and will feel dangerous...but probably isn't. The trick to gravel is to relax...let the bike find its own way...and that results in an unstable feeling for the passenger. After all, the bike is essentially riding on ball bearings. Odds are, you're probably going somewhat slower than on hardtop, so the driver will probably see most things well ahead of when they could potentially be trouble...but, since you are on gravel, if something unexpected comes up that the driver may have missed but the passenger sees, there probably isn't anything either can do about it because any abrupt movement on gravel will probably dump a heavy machine like a venture. So, the best thing is sit back, relax and enjoy the view. If you're going to go down, there isn't much you can do about it...so why worry...?

Solid Motor Mounts
JoeKanuck replied to JoeKanuck's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
PM sent... -
Good day. I am about to tear into my bike to do a few, (hopefully last in a while), fixes and tunes. While I was in there, (taking the thing apart is getting old), I want to change to solid motor mounts. Where is a good place to get them for a reasonable price? Thanks.

Is there any more news on these mounts? I am going to be tearing into my bike in the near future and the fewer times I have to dismantle the thing, the happier I'll be.

Moving TCI to airbox
JoeKanuck replied to PEIslander's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I took mine out, I could unscrew one side but the other wouldn't budge, no matter what voodoo I tried. I ended up cutting off the tab and it came right out. I ended up cutting off the other tab once the unit was out and it helped the TCI fit on top of the airbox. -
I was a big fan of the telelever front end on my R1100rt. It was completely stable and predictable and never got upset no matter what the conditions.

Help with shifter linkage
JoeKanuck replied to Gdserlin's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I rotated my shaft clamp...(or whatever the heck it's called)...to make the angle closer to 90 degrees. It made shifting easier and it will put less stress on the slot which holds the external shaft. -
I took my brothers 2009 FLHX Road Glide out for a run today. All I can say is...Damn...! What a nice bike. It handles way nicer and feels much lighter than my 86 Venture Royale...gobs of torque. I have no idea why that needs a 6 speed...that engine would pull the same with 2. He took off the heel shifter, and set up the toe shifter to serve both up and down shifting duties...it works better that way. He got a great deal on the bike too. He runs a big truck body shop and he got the thing as a write off...had to replace the front fender, one disk and a couple of other bits. No bent forks or frame...hardly a scratch on the paint. Around 5000 miles or so on it. He put in less than 20 pretty casual hours into the bike...he reckons he has less than 8 grand into the beast. I'm very happy with my 2 grand VR but the road glide is one damned nice bike...no doubt about it.

My advice is to take it for a ride. I found some reviews of the Blast in comparison with a Ninja 250. The Blast has some fans...; http://www.bestbeginnermotorcycles.com/buell-blast-review

I'm one of those that cut the case open. I'm pretty good with a soldering iron but decided that with a board this ancient, the less abuse, the better. As it was, one trace lifted while I was desoldering the diodes. I also relocated the TCI to above the air cleaner. So far, I have over 2 thousand kilometers on the repaired TCI with no problems.

Dunlop Elite 3 Rear Tire Question
JoeKanuck replied to KenP's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I put that very tire on my Venture Royale about 3000 km ago. The bike handles very well with it and shows very little wear so far. It sticks very well under a variety of conditions and delivers a good ride. I got a good deal on the tire and have no complaints about it so far. -
Where to find new windshield?
JoeKanuck replied to Lassesand's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I recently bought a Slipstreamer #140. It is the stock size and made of 1/4" plexiglass. It fits well but isn't wide enough for me so I added extensions. Being made of plexiglass, it will scratch very easily and fade over time. A higher quality windshield is made by Clearview. It is more expensive but much less prone to scratching and fading. It is also available in more sizes, with vents and tinted. If you plan on keeping your bike for a long time and can afford it, I would go with the clearview. http://clearviewshields.com/shop/product.php?id=82 -
Don't Try this Kiddies. Not nice Border Guards.
JoeKanuck replied to mrich12000's topic in Watering Hole
With border guards, you have to kiss their ass, any border for any country. Keep a friendly tone, answer all questions simply and evenly as if they were the most important question ever asked. Take their questions seriously because they do, even if they are arrogant blowhards...or maybe especially so. The bigger the dick, the bigger the suckup. Take any of their orders even more seriously. Respond promptly and with respect. NEVER ask them WHY they are doing whatever it is they are doing. Every one of them feels that the fate of their national security rides on their shoulders alone. They have huge egos and short fuses. Border guards do not need probable cause to stop, search, (including strip searches), and ban you from entering their country. The guy in the first recording dug his own grave by questioning, in an incredulous tone, why the guard was asking about what store they were going to. He sounded like a pompous ass and blowhard border guards love to screw with pompous asses. Basically, don't be an idiot. Sucking up to an egotistical nazi wannabe border guard for a couple of minutes is a small price to pay for getting the hell on your way with the minimum of fuss. Oh yah...one more thing...possibly the most important; DO NOT LIE TO THEM...about anything. If you lie about your favorite color, they will assume you are lying about everything and you are screwed. -
Sounds ok to me.

Damned Yamaha for making their engine look like WMD's... -
I'll take a set. I'm in Canada but I can't imagine shipping costing very much. I definitely recommend shipping with USPS to Canada, not UPS. UPS ground has a nasty reputation shipping across the border by tacking on a bunch of rip off fees that you don't get with USPS.

Center Stand Help
JoeKanuck replied to pilothawk's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Another thing; leave the side stand down. It is well out of the way and gives you a safe way to bail out should things get a wee bit too wobbly. -
Did you work out the shipping costs for Canadian customers?

New Diodes in Stock TCI
JoeKanuck replied to JoeKanuck's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The 1N4001 diodes in mine have been running perfectly for over 3000 kilometers so far. I can't imagine needing much more of a torture test than that to prove the concept. There are probably other potential failure items in a 25 year old box but I'm not worried about the diodes. -
redux - 1986 carb problem
JoeKanuck replied to ahunt2412's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would take off the air filter and check to see if the slides are all moving properly. I have had two slides come apart on my '86...at different times. The bike would start fine but run rough until it warmed up...then it ran like it was underpowered and sometimes backfired. Sometimes the slides can stick as well. From the video, it sounds to me like your bike is leaning out when you give it throttle, which would happen if one more slides is stuck in the idle position. It's easy to eliminate the slides from the equation in any case. -
New Diodes in Stock TCI
JoeKanuck replied to JoeKanuck's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I thought it was about time to give a progress report on my bike. I have put almost 3000 kilometers on it since I repaired the diodes on my TCI. So far, it has worked without a hint of problems. I am sure that there are probably other potential issues that could crop up with a 25 year old bit of electronics, but I feel much better about the TCI after replacing the diodes. If you are a dab hand with a soldering iron or know someone who is, it is a reliability option I can recommend.
