Heya all, I haven't found any lists by state yet so I just thought I'd ask here...anybody from the Denver metro area? If you're out there please drop me a line, would like to ride w/ some members sometime this season. A couple of folks I ride with are headed up Sunday to shoot over Trail Ridge Rd. and prob. back down via Winter Park if anyone is interested. Love this forum... cool stuff here Oh yea... one other thing, can someone tell me how to get one of those U.S. maps on my posts? Those are pretty darn cool too! LOLOL Thanks

Any chance you have a place and a little time to maybe help aquaint him with the bike and/or riding in general? A few dozen laps around a parking lot or pasture? Just a thought... cause that's how a buddy and myself are teaching my daughter to ride right now, it seems to be working out well and moving along pretty swiftly. You have a good conscience but it's already been said... not a lot you can do really if he's insistent. Samurai

Been too long coming but THANK YOU! Skydoc, Fuzzy & Marcarl... Yamaha parts being ordered... seals (oil seals, dust seals, & guide bushings). Got some 15wt and stop leak from work so when the parts get here we'll spend a couple hours knockin these things out again and hopefully for the last time. One question about the advice received from Marcarl... I remember this job well and there are actually 2 circlips encountered. One is directly below the air suspension collar on the inner tube, and the other is obviously the retaining clip on top of the flat washer that sits on the oil seal and clips to the outer tube. I should know this already but which one should I watch out for? I can tape both if necessary I guess, just more for my own knowledge than anything. Skydoc... I have to admit I was a bit skeptical on the whole "half glass" thing as far as the oil was concerned, being a tech by trade it goes against all that I know to run low oil especially as hard as I work this thing in the mountains sometimes. But upon dissasembly to perform some other stupid little tasks I decided to take a looksee at the air box and I'LL BE DANGED! puddle of oil, and on the down draft boots outside! (but just the rear 2) so I drained it down tonight and I'll be a little more trusting in the future... Haven't found any "red cap" 20W-50 around here yet, most of the mainstream auto parts stores are worthless when it comes to variety or off the norm products. We have an average temp around here of about 70 but it's much colder during much of the season especially in the mornings so I hope 20-50 will be cool for the colder temps. Anyway... thanks again, you guys rock! BTW... as soon as I figure out how to post some pics here I will take apart my modified CLASS unit and post how to convert it to manual operation (at least how I did it) using the existing circuit board, harness, box etc. someone might get some use out of that cause it's a little different than the fixes I have read on here so far. Heya, New to the site and "kinda" new to the Venture... to the point, I have had this bike for about 5 mos now and am about to replace the rt. fork seal for the 3rd (that's right) 3rd time! I have had the fork out and on the bench at the shop twice to look for anything that could be causing this issue. No scratches (beyond normal wear), rock chips, gouges, etc. etc. This fork had been gotten into before I bought it and a little messed up on reassembly, in as much as they put that little aluminum sleeve w/ the collar on the metering tube inside the fork back in upside down. It was jammed on there pretty hard so I got it off and cleaned it up w/ some emery and polished it with a dremmel best I could. Functionality seems pretty good other than this darn seal. There were these two brass colored rings (I would call them bushings for lack of an automotive equivalent) that looked a bit worn but still reassembled nicely snug. That is about all I can think of as far as info/history on this... please tell me someone has encountered this problem or similar, this little repair is getting annoying... I want to ride w/o the worry of this seal just puking all over the brake caliper. Thanks in advance for ANY suggestions! Oh yea... '86 VR / XVZ1300, 87K miles Side note... I read a post that said the oil should only be half way up the sight glass, is this accurate? Another suggested using 15W-40 for my climate here in CO. is that accurate? I'm thinking I have some reading and serious part shopping to do here! LOL

I took some more time with the CLASS head unit and if you move the connector to the right it acts normally until you let it go... soldering iron here I come! lol Question about the site if someone knows the answer... is there a "specific" place to post for parts wanted or just throw up a wanted post like I saw for the CLASS controller for parts here in this thread? Thanks again! Kelly

Hiya again all! Stitch here, heading out on my first real good ride on my new (used) '86 VR, but ran into something today not encountered yet. The CLASS worked once when I tried it and I haven't tried it since until today cause I know I need to do front fork seals next week. Anyway... I put the ign into ACC tonight and the whole darn display lit up (all of the functions illuminated at the same time) and it's "flickering"... checked connections quickly and everything looks good on the back, no error codes, and it hasn't been played with since I bought it except once... I'm and bit baffled. Also if anyone could please e-mail me the link someone sent me last week of a good source for parts i.e. windscreen I would greatly appreciate it (I can't find the thread again...Eeeek!) Well gotta run back out to the garage and see if I can tinker with it a bit and get it figured out while I wait for the real answer from someone... wish me luck! Kelly

Alright darn it....! I read it in the owners manual too so I know this site is right on but c'mon... really? Oil type/grade If temperature does not go below 40 F (5 C) Yamalube 4-cycle oil/SAE 20W40 type SE If temperature does not go above 60 F(15C) SAE 10W30 type SE I live in c o l o r a d o .... it is often above 60F and often below 40F (especially in the hills) So what now? 10W-40? Stupid question I know but in all my years of working for Toyota and Honda (cars) I've never seen anything like that. Hmmmpph.... LOL Many thanks to Dano for the help earlier... pics to come Dano, I promise. That way you can run this FNG through the ringer too.... LOL Kelly

Hello all, OK... It's Sat. and I'm about to start going through my new 1st gen VR (fluids, plugs, elec. system check, etc.) I started looking her over last night and found a few minor concerns, just minor mechanical and cosmetic but am having trouble finding links etc. so I will put my initial queries in this post and see what shakes loose. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give. Mechanically for starters... I noticed the shift shaft (shifter input shaft if you prefer) has got some play, checked a couple other bikes around (not VR's) and they are solid. Is this normal for 81K miles, or is there a fix for this? I know the seal needs replacing, that's no biggie but the play has me worried. Leaking oil a little from top of lft rear cyl. appears to be cam cover gasket and half moon, any little oddities to beware of here? Will there be any problem switching to full synth on the oil change, or any oil change tips from the masters? Second... cosmetics: The windscreen is "peeling"? and kinda yellow, is there a fix or is this a new windscreen? Needs some odds and ends... side vent, reflector, etc. any good places to get these at a reasonable price? Finally... I'm perplexed, I've seen pics of the '86 VR with and w/o a lower fairing piece or "scoop". Is there a good reason why some have them and some don't? If possible... same as trim question, where can a guy find one at a reasonable price? Thanks for reading and indulging an enthusiastic new owner! Look forward to hearing from you all. Kelly

Hello all, A big thanks to everybody who threw in their opinions/knowledge for me... I am now the proud owner of my first touring machine, have had many bikes over the years but nothing like this... it just begs to go get ice cream in freakin Florida! LOL '86 Royale 1300, it's got a few issues but I am ready to address them directly starting with a full mechanical work over (fluids etc.) Many extra thanks to the poster that said "wave $1500 under his nose" (he was asking $2200)... I had to sit on that number for a day or two but he finally caved mostly cause no one in this city wants to drive all the way to Parker for an old bike. Well.... except me I will be joining officially at the end of my trial, and romping through the tech forum as fast as possible... those are my kind of reads! Thanks again everybody, will be asking questions, posting progress for those who give a darn, and will figure out how to get a pic up on here soon. Great site! Kelly

Thanks so much to all that replied... great info all around! I went and checked it out this evening and what was said is very true... even at it's age and 81K clicks on the odo it runs very nicely! Amazing comfort compared to the 4 or 5 bikes I've ridden in the past but they were a whole different animal! lol For those who care, here's the long and short of it... - Some cracked plastic, nothing major (a few small attempted repairs) - Owner says he's had it since Oct. of last year but can't tell me if anything has been serviced "recently" i.e. rear diff., coolant, ignition system etc. - Gonna need skins relatively soon - Air system inop display reads "PSI" and that's it, no functionality otherwise - Minor bottons missing from intercom control and radio - Windscreen has checking and a little yellow But hey!!! the cruise works and as I stated it runs real nice! Gonna mull over the $2200 price tag and decide on this one tomorrow, everything else around here is way higher for the comparable machine so we'll see. Thanks again for all the input, I will end up with one before it's over... and it's nice to know there are some enthusiasts out there that a guy can brain pick a bit!! Kelly

Hello all, I have decided after some looking around... ok A LOT of looking around that I like this venture bike quite a bit. I am a technician by trade and understand most issues when encountered but I also know that every machine has it's own little quirks that can only be understood by owning and riding. I need to know what (if any) major issues to look for on the 1986 Royale 1300cc (2nd generation?)... at least that is how it's advertised... and am about to drive a long way to check it out! I'm ready to buy, and to own my first full blown touring bike... a bit excited, yet weary at the same time. Any help here? Thanks, Kelly kjp40.05@gmail.com
