  1. Check out Gerbings. I have a pair of the G3 gloves and they are a life changer! They are worth the investment ($139) as you can ride in sub-freezing temperatures with pure delight. The best part is that they are still quite lightweight and thin as opposed to those bulky winter gloves, so they are easy to control the bike. Believe me they work really well. I always have them in my bike now for when the temperature drops down below comfortable.
  2. I.... really REALLY like it! Good by nomad, hello Klingon destroyer. This is one mean looking bike with a lot of awesome features. Don't get angry at me guys, but I'd trade in my rstd for that thing for sure. But that won't happen so no need to get on my case. Yamaha really needs to do something, Harley and Kawasaki are making some amazing bikes. I left out Honda because they know they already know whats going on.
  3. I got a Scorpio alarm for my RSTD. The i900. I wasn't so much worried about the windscreen and back rest being stole, but more so the entire bike and saddle bag contents. So this alarm has a motion sensor and a tilt sensor with a pager which notifies me if someone is up to no good. It also has an anti theft ignition kill to prevent them from starting the bike. Also has a voltmeter in the pager to keep an eye on the battery, cool feature. Some other neat features as well.. The only way for someone to take my bike is if they try to roll her away. But as well all know, that's pretty tough to do with this heavy dog. And they will have only a few moments to try since my pager has notified me as soon as they get within 2 ft from the bike.   4. Good article. This is why I think ABS braking should be mandatory on motorcycles - at least our heavy ones. Its completely instinctual to press down hard on the rear brake when something scares the hell out of you like a car placing itself right in your path. I wish Yamaha would build in an ABS system with the spare parts from the cassette deck!
  5. Yamaha is going to install a record player in one of the saddlebags for next year's 2012 model. My dealer told me so! Just think of all the old LPs you can get at a garage sale.
  6. Just another fad. It will go away, soon. Although expect Yamaha to keep on putting cassette decks in bikes for a while.
  7. Yes, I've read in another forum that those tires are not street legal. People that want to get these bikes street legal have to replace many items just to get it on the road - including the tires.

  9. Very true. I figured that they use pretty cheap parts as its a cheap bike. I'm not planning on getting one, but I just thought it funny that the price of this bike is cheaper than some of the accessories I have put on my royal. I'd love to have a little bike for just cruising around town though. Something light and fun, 250 is more than enough. Cheap is good. Free would be great.
  10. I think I'd want to buy one of these bikes for fun (Kikker Hardknock). Apparently its around $2000, comes in a kit that you have to build yourself.   11. I traded in my V-Star 1100 for the Royal Star TD because I know that the engine and bike will last me a good long time. I was worried about the Harley's as I don't want to be forking out money left and right for repairs. Putting 20,000 km per year on a Harley just seems wrong... Do any Harley-rides do that? I thought they were for riding two-three blocks to the local Tim Hortons and back... But seriously, the V-4 engine feels like it will last forever. I am actually happy to see my odometer go up, instead of get worried like the Vstar. The V-4 is, as you probably read, very smooth. Zero shaking/rumbling. Like butter. But it also has an instant and very responsive throttle too. This bike will do as told on command. I like that a lot. It is something to get use to riding and shifting with higher rev's, but its fun when you get use to it. And you won't ever need more than 5 gears - believe that. Which is good, because I would get lost with knowing what gear I am in with a 6 speeder vtwin. I know what gear i'm in with the royal star at all times. The only downside to this bike you may find is the gear whine. But this is just a personal thing. If you like to have a whisper quite ride with stock pipes, then you will have to do a judgement call on it. If you like a little bit of noise from the pipes and listen to music, you won't even think about it. How was the CFL game in Moncton by the way?
  12. Other ideas I had other than a friendly flashing sign... A camera flash mounted under the trunk facing directly backwards with a trigger button mounted on the handlebars... and something about a small propane tank, piping and spark plugs mounted in the mufflers... These ideas dwell in the darker regions in my mind and that's where they will probably stay.

  18. When I see people riding like that I remind myself that they are the ones that become the statistic and raise my insurance rate. They also remind me that I am not one of them and that I should be even more considerate and cautious while I ride. I want everyone driving around me to think 'people that ride crotch rockets drive like idiots, but I like those Royal Star riders..' Probably won't happen though.

  20. Tailgating seems like it just an accepted way to drive now. Honestly I find that riders (mostly sport bikes) tailgate cars as if they were a new rear bumper accessory. I don't think that most people intend on being a nuisance and tailgate intentionally. After all, most people that drive cars are in a zombie-like state when they go to work day after day, same route, same traffic... Even if you shake up one tailgater, their will always be endless herds of them ready to fill their spot behind you. Maybe they just need a 'friendly reminder' to say hey, please leave me some space, or your following dangerously close! I was thinking taking one of those scrolling LED signs (small but bright) and mounting it around my rear signals and pre-programming it with a number of messages that can be activated by a touch of a button. I figured that this would be an easy way to communicate with following driver(s) to be more mindful. I don't think it will work for everyone, but I think it might work for the majority. Just another crazy though in my head
  21. My clutch engagement/friction zone is right at the final travel of the clutch handle ie. furthest from the handlebar grip. I find this to be a nuisance because I have to have a wide open hand grip most of the time to maneuver slowly (meaning I dont have a good grip on the handlebar) and it takes an extra second or so for me to release the clutch handle to the end of its travel to downshift (being very cautious not to release too quickly or the clutch will grab too quickly - scary when wanting to do an emergency stop!) I can pull apart the handlebar and file down the pin that engages and disengages the clutch (to bring the clutch friction zone closer to the handlebar) but it wont change the tiny friction zone.
  22. I just put in the PCW clutch kit a month ago. I decided to go for it over the Barnett purely based on price (PCW = 84 bucks, Barnett = 150+). However, I'm not really happy with my results. Yes the PCW will fix any slipping clutch and it will give you an incredible off the line pull with the ability to change gears quickly, but it has those drawbacks. Off the line and shifting up is great! Downshifting is scary, especially when you need to slow it down in a hurry. The travel of the clutch is so short that its basically engaged or not, not much slippage play-room. Slow speed maneuvering is also more difficult because you have to have a steady grip or your going to lurch forward. Overall I think the PCW kit is great for racing and booting it around town, but for the average rider its not very friendly. I will probably throw the half disc back sooner than later and move to a Barnett kit down the road. Oh, and you can buy just the spring and gasket from PCW - it would be around 50-70 bucks I think. That would probably fix a slipping clutch, but i'm not sure how long it will work for as the PCW spring looks identical to the stock spring.
  23. I have an RSTD. The welded pin just puts the backrest into the lock position. Maybe you could just 'make' a pin by positioning and installing a small bolt of similar size in the same location that the pin is in.
  24. It would be great if this forum could invest into a beat up royal star for r&d science. I would be the first to take mine apart to find a solution, just I use my bike too much to have it sit in pieces for a while. It would be a good winter project if I had a heated garage .
  25. Yes, true enough about the repainting. Either way this is a cool mod that takes an hour at most and only requires sandpaper and tape. I just wanted to see a picture of the whole bike from afar, not up close engine pics. Oh well, maybe I will be the first to take a picture of the whole bike after the mod.
