For what it's worth, a good friend and lodge brother has been a Yamaha dealer for 35 years. I bought my 99 from him in 02. When I asked him about the future of the Venture he says the problem is that the V4 can not be fuel injected in the frame we have now. There's no room. We will still have our Venture but they are going to have to go to a big V Twin. That's the future.

Bought my 99 in 03 from the dealer with 11k on it. The first time I rode it I heard a scraping noise coming from the rear. Rear pads were shot. Metal to metal. He was embarassed they didn't catch it and picked it up with a trailer and replaced them no charge.
-
I think his downfall was that the rear tire lost traction on the slick ramp and that was all she wrote. I would have broken at least one important bone.

When I took the MSF course 8 years ago I had to buy a pair of high top boots. I planned on riding in boat shoes or tennis shoes. I thought they were being overly cautious. I promised my wife I wouldn't ride my 99 until I graduated from the class. So, Sunday after Saturday graduation I'm going for a ride. I didn't want to fool with the heavy boots so I put on my boat shoes. I'm backing the beast out of the garage, my foot slips on some leaves,I start going down and in the process of jumping off I bang the side of my foot on a piece of metal on the bike. The next day I couldn't walk on it, it was black and blue from my foot to my knee. Took a week to start healing. Moral of story: If I'm on the bike I'm wearing boots, jeans, jacket and a quality helmet. Those MSF folks knew what the were talking about.

After trying more than a few muffler combinations on my 99 over the years trying to get that perfect sound, I finally got it with a used pair of Bub Mad Dogs off of Ebay about 4 years ago. I haven't used my sound system since. The sweet sound of that big V4 in 5th gear is all the music I need whether it's a 5 mile or 500 mile ride.

Russel, it sounds dumb but I had the exact same noise in my 99 and turns out I only had 20lbs of air in the rear tire. Put air in and the noise went away. -
Buddy,I've been repairing auto A/C at my shop here in Tampa for 35 years. It's been my experience that when you have high readings on both sides it's almost always a restricted condenser. And for some reason most of the plugged condeners I've replaced over the years have been on Fords. A restricted condenser is like a restricted radiator, you can flush and back flush it all you want but you're wasting your time. Good luck. Mike

I know you folks up north and upper mid west are gonna think I'm a big weeny but It has been COLD here in Florida. I haven't been able to ride the last two weeks because the lows have been in the 30's and the highs have been in the 50's and raining. We had snow flurries Saturday and it was ugly. Today was 28 in Tampa. You have to understand that if we go more than one day without seeing the sun we start feeling really sorry for ourselves. OK, I'm through whining.

Goose is right on,the carb passages are gunky. The problem is the ethanol. I have a good friend who has been a Yamaha dealer for 35 years and sells bikes and watercraft. He says the ethanol in the gas is driving them nuts. If you run it at least once a week there's no problem, but if you do like I do and go for a month or more without riding thats trouble. I've had to rebuild the carbs on my 99 twice in the last 2 years because I let it set too long and did'nt put a fuel stabilizer in like I should have. He rcommends Stabil Marine. I use it now, and haven't had any problems. he also told me that when they rebuild the carbs they make sure they run cleaner wires thru all the jets because sometimes soaking in cleaner and compressed air isn't enough to get the gunk out.

Disappointed with the 2010 RSV

I have a good friend who has been a Yamaha dealer for 35 years. I bought my 99 from him in 02. Any way, whenever I ask him about Venture upgrades etc. he says at corporate meetings the Venture is the LAST thing the company reps talk about. what a shame. such a great bike and it's the "red headed stepchild" of the company. I personally think all that Yamaha cares about anymore is crotch rockets and jet skis,at least in Florida anyway. -
Although I've had my 99 for five years I've never ridden in the dark in the country until this weekend.I left Cocoa at 5 AM headed for Tampa and I was NOT impressed with the headlight. It looked like I had a kerosene lantern lighting the way.Any ideas on a bulb upgrade?

Steve It's an off brand copy of a Stebel I think. I never actually saw a brand name on it. It came in a generic box. The Ebay seller was Tiernee's Treasures. Just type "motorcycle air horns" into the Ebay search window. Price was 38.38 w/free shipping. It is LOUD.
-
Got my cheapo air horn from Ebay and because red was cheaper than chrome, and I am cheap, I had no choice but to mount it in the fairing. I was worried about it being muffled, but after I installed it I tried it before and after I put the shell back on and saw no difference. I may be crazy but the shell seems to act like a soundboard and actually enhance the sound. BTW a special thanks to Freebird for the heads up on the color of the horn switchwire (pink). This particular horn pulls alot of amps so I went ahead and ran the power wire straight from the battery with a 30 amp fuse in line.
