So I was washing the bike and I noticed that one of the tabs that holds on the left lower is broken. It is number 7 in the pic below. This is actually not a bad one to break because the lower still seems to be attached fairly well. My question is this something the dealer will replace under warranty? And is it worth the inevitable argument with the service manager? David

Saddle Bag Hinge Screws
sadicarnot replied to sadicarnot's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
My real rant is over Yamaha's poor engineering/assembly after all these years of making this bike all of the little piddly things like screws coming loose and rear hubs not having enough grease should be fixed. For goodness sake they have had over a decade of no change in the design to figure all of these things out. -
Saddle Bag Hinge Screws
sadicarnot replied to sadicarnot's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Dude I put it on the screws that go into metal, not the ones that screw into the plastic. It will be ok don't worry. One place that is a worry is the vent hoses from the carbs, it is good to check the routing of those because they can eat away the lowers from the inside. It could be happening to your bike right now, better check. -
Saddle Bag Hinge Screws
sadicarnot posted a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
So I decided to spend the next week going over the bike changing oil etc. in preparation for Biketoberfest (I hate it when friends use the week of the event to get their maintenance done) Today I went over 4800 miles and decided to start with the saddlebags. I had read that the screws holding the hinges on need to be checked for looseness. I never really looked close at where those screws are. Good thing Yamaha put them behind the fabric. Out of the 8 screws only one was loose, but I took all of the screws out that were going into metal and put a dab of blue loctite on them. Anyway as others have said here before, check your hinges. -
Yamaha knows about CD's. It is kind of ironic considering they got their start as a music company. http://thurly.net/uh6

I think the pops are normal when you start it when it is hot. All of my bikes have done it particularly in the summer when it is really hot. In my opinion it is just a bit of pre-ignition in one of the cylinders. The only thing to worry about would be extra load on the starter.

I was wondering if people could post pics of how they mounted their GPS's. I have the RAM-Mount set up that uses a u-bolt on the handlebar. I have not installed it yet and was curious as to what others had done to see if anyone had a better set up than what I am planning on doing. My other question is where to get power. My original plan was to power it from the connector near the battery. But I seem to remember there being another connector under the cover where the key is. I am at work and the bike is home so I can't look. I have to take that cover off to remove the tank etc. But if there is a plug there it would make things easier. One more question is for people with the Zumo 660. On my last bike I ended up clipping all the data wires and just using the power on the cradle. This simplifies the wiring harness. Not sure what the usb is for in any case. Has anyone else done this? I use an iPod for music so don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles the zumo has.

Equifax. Damn auto correct on the iPad.

I recommend setting up a credit alert with equinox. It is $70/year and you can configure it Thant any time your credit is accessed you get an alert.

Well I just did the clutch upgrade on my '09 RSTD with about 1700 miles on it. Took about 2 hours altogether including cleanup and pulling the discs out after realizing I left the washer in there. Good thing I checked the excellent writeup on the site to make sure I was on the right track. All in all it was not to hard but I did worry when I got to the wire, was not sure how to get that out without breaking it. The half disc was hard to get out because it is in there so deep. Any way the clutch pull is a little harder as people have said. I think the friction zone is slightly larger but it engages later on in the travel. I think that is a function of it grabbing better. Any way time will tell. Not sure how you would be able to get that wire back in there if you were to go back to stock. David

I ended up using BaseCamp instead of the RoadTrip software and uploaded a route.
-
Walt; Unfortunately Garmin is pretty lacking on Mac software. The equivalent software for mac is called RoadTrip. They have another program called Basecamp. I was able to upload a route that someone else made. I made a route myself but when I tried uploading it the software says that it is successfully uploaded but when you look at the device the route is not there. Anyway, I will have to post to the zumoforum. I think this is a pretty specific mac problem. David

I have Garmin Zumo 660 and am using Garmin Roadtrip on a Mac. I am having trouble uploading routes to the device. Someone sent me a GPX file and I was able to get that onto the device. I tried making some routes on my own but have been unable to get them to appear onto the device. If anyone is using this gps/computer combo, any advice would be much appreciated. I plan on having a buddy send me another gpx to see if it will load. BTW I have an 8gb micro sd card in it and tried putting the gpx on the card and into the internal memory. No joy either way.

THis was good. I sat on GW at the Honda dealer near me and thought it was a great feeling bike. That may be my next bike.

I went to the Kawasaki/Honda dealer near me today. The Vulcan 1700's look pretty good. Fuel injected vs carbs on the RSTD/Venture. Belt drive which eliminates the middle gear and simplifies the drive train. Real speedometer which works better than the gimmicky Buick speedo that the Yamaha's have. Then you have the spur gears that are noisier, not sure what the other bikes have. One thing I wonder about is what exactly does the balance shaft do? The RSTD is a good bike but looking around I am not sure what the compelling reason is to stick with it. Other than the great price I got, I do have a bit of buyers remorse.

Rear End Creaking
sadicarnot replied to sadicarnot's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
HAH! not my rear end the bikes!! Love the bike, performs good in the rain which here in Florida happens a lot. Just need to farkle it up, such as highway pegs. only complaint is that my feet get a bit toasty with the lowers, but I love the lowers otherwise as they keep my feet dry in the rain. I also think the speedometer is a little gimicky. The kilometers stand out more than the MPH, would have been better with a regular speedometer in the tank like the Roadstar. Oh yeah and I think all bikes should have a clock. -
Clutch Upgrade Questions
sadicarnot replied to sadicarnot's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Troy; Thank you for the link. It looks like 4, 5, 6, and 7 are removed. 7 is then replaced with the full disk. I have attached the photo from the other post -
So I have purchased the clutch upgrade from Earl and plan on doing it in the next week or so. I have reviewed all of the posts that I could find and think I have a good feel on how to do it, but I have a few questions to make sure I understand. I have posted the clutch drawing from the parts fiche. So I understand that the part labeled 4 is the wire, this is discarded. The posts on the site say to 'break' the wire. What is it attached to exactly and do you break it or can you just reach in and cut it with a pair of dykes? Is it just lockwire or is it a cable of some sort? It is called a Ring, Clutch Boss. Part number 5,6,7, and 8 are unique in that they are all the only one of their type. Which one is the 1/2 plate and besides 4 which other parts are discarded (besides 12 I know that is the spring) I am thinking 7 is the half and is replaced. Anyway if someone has done this mod recently I would much appreciate the input. David

Well I have less than 1000 miles on my RSTD and I have the rear end creak. I was rolling it out of the garage today and heard the creaking. I have seen some posts that say it can be a bent drive shaft. How do you check for that? Just put it on some machine blocks and use a dial indicator? Anyway, I bought the leveling links and also have the Carbon One adapter, so I plan on riding it this weekend then lifting it Sunday to work on this. I figure I am better off doing it than dealing with the dealer as I am not in the mood to argue with them over whether it is a problem or not. I have the documentation from this website and it should not be that big of a deal to do. David

So rode my RSTD into work today and in several areas had to pass thru fog. The first area was not that big of a deal but 2 places later on were not good. My windshield fogged up and since I look thru it it was a major issue. Short of waiting for the day to warm up before leaving for work, is there any concoction that can be put on to avoid this? I ended up pulling over and wiping off the windshield, but it was not long before it was bad again. Luckily I was close to the end of my commute.

The whine is caused the way the gears mesh together. Other posts have touched on the fact that Yamaha uses straight cut gears as opposed to helical gears. It is just the nature of the beast, for whatever the reason yamaha chose this design with is inherently louder than other configurations. I wear earplugs and can;t really hear the whine.

My feet get hot. I think a lot of hot airflow comes off the radiator. No air to mix with it due to the lowers. Need to get those wings or whatever they are called.

I hate to do this, but here we go on another synthetic oil jag: So I took my new '09 RSTD to the dealer for the first service (they are also putting on the Flanders bars and lines but that is for another thread) So I asked the service guy if they could put synthetic oil in when they change the oil. He said they don't like to do that and went on a discussion on how it causes the clutch to slip and on "R6 motorcycles causes a ticking noise that sounds like the engine is coming apart". He told me if I insist they will do that but they don't like to because of all of the complaints. Plus he intimated that if I put synthetic in they would have to tear down the engine to find the problems it will cause and it will only be fixed by putting regular oil in. Any way I swear by synthetic, I have always used Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. I am planning on using Amsoil. I will probably go a few hundred miles on this oil then change it to the amsoil. I ended up buying a Corbin as I have had them on several other bikes and do like them. I am surprised to see the positive comments here as people run hot or cold on them. Many find them to be too hard. I am the opposite as I like the firmness. As a matter of fact if I had the money I would buy one of their couches as I like the firmness of them. In any case I bought a solo tourer with the passenger pillion. I don't usually ride 2 up so no need for a dual tourer. Any way went to install it today and the bracket on it does not allow the bolts to be installed. You can get one side in but not the other. I was thinking of just returning it because there is a company called Diamond Seats here in Florida. I figure screw dealing with the Corbin, I will go to Diamond where they could measure me and get a true custom seat. http://www.diamondseats.com/ Any way went to the Corbin website to see what the return policy is. Pretty easy no returns. I have an e-mail into Corbin. I work at a power plant with a lot of welders. Worse case scenario I have my buddy at work make me a new one. Probably take me longer to explain what needs to be done than for him to actually do it. Here are some pics of the problem:
