Worst thing is I held on too long and hurt my wrist. My left hand got caught between the grip and the mirror and I guess twisted a bit too much, happened so fast not sure really what happened. I tell you when you get older it is hard to shake these kind of things off. It feels a little better today. As long as it improves a bit each day I won't need to go to the doctor hopefully. Ironically I had been thinking about the Victory's lately and how they have those videos where they just drop them. The only thing that happened to my RSTD is a little scrape on the left crash bar underneath where you can't see it. Actually the shock and heart palpitations and adrenalin and panic that it caused me was much worse than what happened to the bike. Usually when this happens you are in the parking lot with all your buddies and they run over to help. This happened to me in my driveway and none of the neighbors were out. The hard part was keeping calm and remember all of the demonstrations I have seen at rallies on how to get the bike back up.

Rear End Groan

I did align the axel, but wonder now if maybe I did it wrong. I'll have to look for the procedure. -
Rear End Groan
sadicarnot replied to sadicarnot's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Yeah I took it all apart, cleaned everything and thought I had put enough grease on everything. -
My RSTD started groaning from the rear end. I replaced the tires back in November and thought I put enough grease on all the rear end components. Very surprised that it is groaning all things considered. Anyway I have a YSS shock coming so I think I will go ahead and replace it by removing the rear wheel route.

I keep my bike in a WheelDock wheel chock when it is in the garage. On Friday night I was cleaning the bike and absent-mindedly put the kickstand up. On saturday I was getting ready to roll it out and remembered it had a full tank of gas, so I went to put some seafoam in. I ended up spilling it on the gas tank and was worried about what it would do to the paint. So I ended up cleaning that up, breaking my routine because I started to get into a rush. I backed it out of the garage and was startled when it kept going when I tried to put it on the kickstand. What a shock. It is tough to get back up, it surprised me when it happened and I had trouble thinking strait. Any way, I did get it up, but remember to check the kickstand.

new WORKS shock install
sadicarnot replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I decided to go with the YSS. Less money and 2 yr warranty than the Works. 2-3 week delivery. Any way just to double check I have an '09 Royal Star Tour Deluxe. Klaus quoted me a model #MZ 506-255 TR. Just want to make sure this is the right one. Thanks for all of the help. -
new WORKS shock install
sadicarnot replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
WOW!!! THAT IS A GREAT IDEA!! I did not even think of that. Thank you for that. How much do you think I can get for a shock with about 20 miles on it? -
new WORKS shock install
sadicarnot replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I went out to the garage the other day and saw a new oil stain under my '09 RSTD. Sure enough I looked underneath and the bottom shock mount is wet with oil. I have only had the bike for 1.5 years so it is still in warranty. I am inclined to just go ahead and buy an aftermarket shock and be done with it and not have to deal with the stealer. I am leaning between YSS and Works performance with the Works being tops in build quality and YSS almost equal but leading on price.. Reading the posts I think these are the top 2 choices with Hagon being less optimal. Would I be mercilessly be made fun of if I did not go the warranty route and just went ahead and got an aftermarket? -
I lubed the splines and have everything back together. One question on aligning the pumpkin: I put the axle in without the wheel and tightened the pinch bolt then tapped the pumpkin with a rubber mallet then tightened the acorn nuts. Just checking that that is correct. I had quite a time getting the drive shaft into the u-joint, talk about doing something blind. I ended up sticking my finger in the hole with the rubber plug. Took a while, I had to stop calm down and try again. Seemed like it took hours, but it was only 25 minutes. Anyway, I finally got it in because of luck rather than any skill. Any way better lucky than smart when it comes to things like this. At one point I was ready to give up and come on the board to ask someone to come to my house. Oh yea another thing that happened, I am working with the garage door open and it was rather windy. There are landscapers at some of the neighbors house. I did not think much of it till I came back out from getting a drink and wash some of the grease off my hands. I looked at my newly cleaned and meticulously greased splines and they were covered with leave particles from the landscaping. Any way I did not know what affect that would have so I cleaned every thing again and regreased.

Ken; My bike is on the lift now with the tires off. Can you give a little write up of the steps? I imagine you just took the pumpkin off, but are there clips you have to worry about?

Leveling links installed
sadicarnot replied to jeff2053's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The slop you are feeling may be the needle bearing sleeve inside the attach point. The leveling links themselves end up pressing against a sleeve that is inside needle bearings. This is so the links themselves can pivot when the suspension moves up and down. -
I don't know. MSC and Fastenal carry them. Things like this, I usually tell my salesperson that calls on me at work that I have a home project going on and they hook me up.
-
The wheels that are on it only fit that way. I would have to get smaller wheels for that to work.
-
It was balanced pretty good. I lifted it and repositioned the the jack a couple of times and this position seemed pretty good. When I get the wheels back on I could move the jack towards the rear and try it there. It will have to be tuesday or wednesday because the stealer is closed monday.

Yeah it was pretty cool, the salesforce has a pretty good demo where they have a vibration rig connected to a computer that measures clamping force. They bolt it up with the various locking devices and you can watch the nuts loosen. At work we are looking at this for a cooling tower application where the bolts keep loosening. Actually I am looking at it. Management is afraid of anything new, no matter how well it may work. So I showed them this, if they don't use it I will not be tightening any bolts in the future.

Here are some photos, I guess they are easy enough to pose. Before I took the wheels off the bike I moved the lift around quite a bit, and was unable to find a good happy medium of stability, leg clearance, kickstand clearance.
-
Larry; I have your e-mail so I will send the photos to that. I took several...I should have put a ruler in the frame. Let me know if you need more.

Here is a link to a new style of lockwasher we are looking at at work. They are better than split washers and nylock nuts. The salesperson has a vibration stand that shows how clamping force goes down with vibration using the other types of locking devices. These Nord-Lock washers actually increase clamping force when they loosen. I have not used them on my bike as of yet but plan on it when Fastenal starts stocking them at work. http://www.nord-lock.com/

I have a Pitbull Lift and the Carbon One Lift Adapter with the legs option. The fixed wheels on the Pitbull Lift are in the way of where the feet on the legs need to go. I was wondering if anyone has this combination. The Pitbull is considered to be very stable and this is achieved by being very wide. This added width causes the lift to interfere with the legs. Anyway not the end of the world, but a little disappointing as I think it would be easier to change the oil if the bike is on the legs and the lift is moved out of the way. Thanks.

I had a Vulcan 750 once that ran out of gas. Engine faltered and I switched to reserve but nothing was there. I've got a friend with a Intruder 1500LC with open pipes and a jet kit. When I ride behind him you can smell the raw gas flowing out the engine. The cruxt of it is that he gets about 85 miles to the tank. For whatever reason he does not go by mileage but by the fuel gage. Invariably I know when he needs gas better than he does. It happens all the time: "Do you need gas?".."No I have 2 bars left on the gage".."OK well we are at the mileage where you usually need to fill up".. "No I have plenty of gas left".. We end up going about a mile or 2 and he will pull into the gas station. Makes me chuckle when I know how far friends bikes can go better than they can. Since that incident with the Vulcan I have never had a gas issue. Been left by the battery a few times, that sucks.

Cassette Deck, why do you have a problem with MORE options?
sadicarnot replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
Kirby I don't think you are getting it. It is not that we don't like it enough to get something else. This is just a forum to express frustration and wishes...At least that was my impression. The last vehicle I bought that came with a cassette deck was a 1994 car. By 2000 almost all cars had converted over. The point is that Yamaha still sells the cassette deck 10 years after most of the world has moved on. Why are they the only ones, that is all we want to know. Great that there are some people that find a use for it. Next time I am in Best Buy I will see if you can still buy a cassette recorder. The point is how useful is the cassette deck any more and more importantly is Yamaha behind the times with the RSTD/Venture. I would say the cassette deck shows how Yamaha has stopped developing the model. Many people say the bike is perfect and that is why they stopped developing it....Really then why does my 2009 have the same issues as the earlier models. I think these are valid discussions to have when you are trying to decide what bike to buy. I used to think that shaft drive is the way to go on a bike, but looking at how Kawasaki and Victory and Harley all have belt drive, maybe that is a better choice. SHaft drive is certainly not maintenance free maybe belt drive is. RSTD/Venture is still has carbs, most of the industry has moved to fuel injection, does it matter? I don't know, it would be nice if there could be a good discussion as to the pros and cons without the flame war that usually follows. My 2 cents. -
Cassette Deck, why do you have a problem with MORE options?
sadicarnot replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
I don't think the cassette deck is ultimately the problem. It is just an indication of the lack of development of the bike. I was at the stealer recently and was looking at the Stratoliner, the bags have quick releases and ipod connection in the fairing, a tach and, a real speedometer. This dealer also has Kawasaki. When you look at bikes from other manufacturers you see the options they have and wonder if you made the right choice. People say the bikes are bullet proof but if you look at the posts here you see that the shaft is anything but maintenance free. The rear wheel hub still has the same grease issue from the factory it had 5 years ago. Maybe belt drive would be better. Whining gears, the list is probably longer if you parse the issues on the forum. The week I bought my bike, someone with a 99 Royal Star parked next to me. It was the same bike. Everyone has varying amounts of buyers remorse. These issues just increase that feeling. -
The only way I have found to remove the music/media player icon on the map screen is to delete all song files off of the Zumo 660 memory cards.

Anyone going to Biketoberfest? I am going up from Brevard County starting Wednesday. I plan on going up each day till Sunday. Even though it does not start until Thursday, I have found it to be fun to go up on Wednesday and do some riding around before it gets crowded. I also like to scope out who is where because the vendors start setting up on Wednesday.
