If I was closer I'd come on down to give you a hand! Why not arrange a "grub and grow" or a "beer and build" or ??????? Whatever. Set a date, have the materials and a PLAN and invite everybody for a building bee. Once the foundation and pad is done, with good organization, you could have it finished including interior work, in a weekend.

It looks like the back end of the tow bike must have been pretty light. That's a lot of weight too! Braking must have been an adventure.

Thanks for the update Rick! Good to know Tom's on the mend! I've never met him....(I don't think) but regardless he's part of the VR family! Sounds like it could have been a LOT worse.

Putting forks etc back on
Trader replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK....I"m lost already! I have this rubber castled washer that I very carefully saved with the triple tree hardware. As you can see in the manual, it is not shown. It fits perfectly on the OUTSIDE of the ring nuts. So where does this go? It is most definitatly NOT washer #4 And PLEASE don't tell me it belongs under the lower bearing!!!:bang head: -
Check out the "VENTURE HISTORY" tab at the top of the page. It will explain it all. OK....I was wrong....it doesn't explain.(now there's a surprise!) so I'll explain..... 1st gen is 83-93 Mk I is 83 to 85 MkII is 85 -93 2nd gen is 94 and up I THINK!!!!!

I got the lower steering bearing pressed on, and the bearing races in. I can start putting everything back together again. Obviously I have to pack the bearings...but other than that is there ANYTHING I should be aware of or is it pretty much just do the reverse of what I did to take it apart?

OK Gary....you are good! You don't have to fish for complements!

Mum and Dad were married for just over 62 years when Mum died. They met when they were both in the army. Dad was a Grenadier Guard and was assigned to be an "armed escort" for my Mum, who was a driver in the Women's army (the ATS) in England (so yes, my mother DID wear army boots!). She often had to deliver secret documents etc. It's a family joke that he was not issued ANY ammunition. All show and no go as it were. Even in guard duty, Dad got in trouble for not challanging the sargent major with the proper "Halt! Who goes there? Advance and be recognized" The officer asked Dad "what if I was a German soldier?" Dad answered "if you were a german soldier I wouldn't be here! I don't have any bullets in my gun!" I think he said that one was good for a month of KP

We have no chioce....EVERYBODY has 10% ethenol. or at least I'm pretty sure everybody has it....I haven't found any without ethenol for a long time! Do they still have octane boosters? Would it be worth while or would that just provide more power and not more MPH

have you checked to ensure the steering bearings are tight? With the bike on the center stand and the front elevated, when you swing the handle bars to the lock position, it should only bounce back a few inches. If it bounces more than a few inches....or repeatedly bounces, your steering bearing is too loose. I'm assuming the air pressure in tires and suspension has been checked???

I have a 4" piece of 2 x 4 for that very reason.

packing steering head bearings
Trader replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Another question....heard of folks installing a zerk fitting...but wouldn't that just drop down to the bottom....unless you fill the entire cavity which seems like a LOT of grease??? Thanks for your patience guys...I know a lot of stupid questions...but hey! if you don't know...ask. Right? -
packing steering head bearings
Trader replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
tree is naked! And its well chilled. As to when to grease it....I guess that falls under the catagory of "DUH"!!! Just regular axle grease OK? or should I use the Honda Moly I bought for the rear pins? -
OK...I finally got a few minutes tonight to see about putting my bike back together as a refresher....1988 VR, replacing the steering bearings. So...I put the bearing races and triple tree in the freezer to "shrink" them Races went into the neck just fine! I was told to put the bearings in the oven at about 200' or so to expand them, then tap them on with some PVC pipe. Question....how to I pack the bearings? Before the heat...they'll just melt the grease out of the bearings and make a mess. After the heat?...Still, will the grease not just heat up and run out? And by the time I pack them...will they not cool off too much?

We are told in the last days there will be an increase in "pestillances" and that "time and unforeseen circumstances befall us all" TImes will get harder before they get better. All we can do is rely on our creator. She certainly deserves to be in our thoughts! She is obvioulsy a caring human being and needs all our support. And After all...she is married to you! -
A case of a LEO being in the right place at the right time
Trader replied to AKRefugee's topic in Watering Hole
Why is it that a LEO's word is good enough to give you a ticket for running a stop sign, illegal turn or something like that...but not for trying to run someone off the road??!!!!! Now, with a minor slap on the wrist, that person is even more ticked off at bikes. I wouldn't want to be the next one he encounters! He should be in jail for a few weeks for "wreckless" endangerment...if you excuse the pun!
