Also known as Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport after WW I ace Here's what Wikkopedia says about his medals. VICTORIA CROSS For most conspicuous bravery, determination, and skill. Captain Bishop, who had been sent out to work independently, flew first of all to an enemy aerodrome; finding no machines about, he flew on to another aerodrome about three miles southeast, which was at least 12 miles the other side of the line. Seven machines, some with their engines running, were on the ground. He attacked these from about fifty feet, and a mechanic, who was starting one of the engines, was seen to fall. One of the machines got off the ground, but at a height of 60 feet, Captain Bishop fired 15 rounds into it at very close range, and it crashed to the ground. A second machine got off the ground, into which he fired 30 rounds at 150 yards range, and it fell into a tree. Two more machines then rose from the aerodrome. One of these he engaged at a height of 1,000 feet, emptying the rest of his drum of ammunition. This machine crashed 300 yards from the aerodrome, after which Captain Bishop emptied a whole drum into the fourth hostile machine, and then flew back to his station. Four hostile scouts were about 1,250 feet above him for about a mile of his return journey, but they would not attack. His machine was very badly shot about by machine gun fire from the ground.[65] Distinguished Flying Cross His citation for the Distinquished Flying Cross read: A most successful and fearless fighter in the air, whose acts of outstanding bravery have already been recognised by the awards of the Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Order, Bar to the Distinguished Service Order, and Military Cross. For the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross now conferred upon him he has rendered signally valuable services in personally destroying twenty-five enemy machines in twelve days—five of which he destroyed on the last day of his service at the front. The total number of machines destroyed by this distinguished officer is seventy-two, and his value as a moral factor to the Royal Air Force cannot be over-estimated.[66] Distinguished Service Order His citation for the Distinquished Service Order read: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. While in a single-seater he attacked three hostile machines, two of which he brought down, although in the meantime he was himself attacked by four other hostile machines. His courage and determination have set a fine example to others.[66] Distinguished Service Order Bar His citation for the Distinguished Service Order bar read: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when engaging hostile aircraft. His consistent dash and great fearlessness have set a magnificent example to the pilots of his squadron. He has destroyed no less than 45 hostile machines within the past 5 months, frequently attacking enemy formations single-handed, and on all occasions displaying a fighting spirit and determination to get to close quarter with his opponents which have earned the admiration of all in contact with him.[66]

With all the turmoil in the market today and the collapse of Lehman Bros and Acquisition of Merrill Lynch by Bank of America this might be some good advice. For all of you with any money left, be aware of the next expected mergers so that you can get in on the ground floor and make some BIG bucks. Watch for these consolidations later on this year: 1.) Hale Business Systems, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Fuller Brush, and W R. Grace Co. Will merge and become: Hale, Mary, Fuller, Grace. 2.) Polygram Records, Warner Bros., and Zesta Crackers join forces and become: Poly, Warner Cracker. 3.) 3M will merge with Goodyear and become: MMMGood. 4. Zippo Manufacturing, Audi Motors, Dofasco, and Dakota Mining will merge and become: ZipAudiDoDa . 5. FedEx is expected to join its competitor, UPS, and become: FedUP. 6. Fairchild Electronics and Honeywell Computers will become: Fairwell Honeychild. 7. Grey Poupon and Docker Pants are expected to become: PouponPants. 8. Knotts Berry Farm and the National Organization of Women will become: Knott NOW! And finally... 9. Victoria 's Secret and Smith & Wesson will merge under the new name: TittyTitty BangBang

My Venture is not running - sniff.

Obvious question is "is it getting gas". Is there gas in the tank? You suggested fuel pump....if you open the drain plugs on the carbs and drain the bowls, (watch to see if there is any gas in there to drain!) close the drains and turn the key on you should be able to hear the fuel pump running. Plugged fuel filter? When you jumped it...hopefully it was with a NON running car....so just the battery..not the alternator....I've read on here that jumping with a running car can fry our electrics. -
Who are you to tell me to be vigilant???? you need to tell people to watch out...but ONLY IF YOU WANT TO! Oh man I hope I don't catch it for this one too!!!!!

Hi Folks WOW...really stirred up a hornets nest with this one didn't I? I've already told you all I NEVER meant my encouragement to wear a helmet as a slight to Dano. I admit to a lack of good judgement...I probably should have either shut up or started a new thread. I did get a number of PM's telling me they understood I meant no harm! But, I do want to apologize to anyone who took offence at my comments. Some folks got their backs up because they thought my comments were trying to "force" my opinion on others. Not at all....as someone else said, it is only because I care and I would hate to see anyone with their brains all over the road. I saw that in high school The driver accellerated as my friend, who was riding in the box, was standing up to get out. He did 1 1/2 back flip and smashed his head like a pumpkin on the pavement....and died. About 30 years ago I was invoved in an accident riding passenger on my best friends bike. We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It happened very quickly and we went down...probably close to 55 mph. I remember rolling like a log. It was almost fun! I ended up against the fence at the side of the highway like a safety net with only a few bruises. My buddy hit a 4"x4" sign post as he was rolling and was dead before we got to the hospital. In that one, and in several minor accidents....I have never even SCUFFED my helmet and my friend who died did not either. So wearing a helmet made no difference and my friend is dead anyway. If he wasn't wearing a helmet I'm sure it would have been announced and reflected in statistics . Yet, it had no bearing on the cause of death. So why do I always wear a helmet? In Ontario it is the law...but even when I travel to states where I have a choice I always wear it because it's the smart thing to do. I'm not some fanatic. I wear a leather jacket 95% of the time, western boots and gloves...but no armour...no kevlar jeans I justify it by believing that road rash probably won't kill me...but mushed brains will. Once again...to those who offered understanding and support...Thank you To those who were upset by my comments....I am truely sorry. Your Friend Steve H (Trader)

Just this past weekend Marcarl and I were working on the bike. When I went to put the plugs BACK IN if found a small screw sitting on the edge. It could have easily fallen in without noticing and ruined my motor. The mirror idea is a VERY good one!!!

I guess I'm the guilty party. I may not have shown good judgement on my comment...but please understand that I was not putting down anyone....passing judgement or anything else. My intention was only to remind folks that HELMETS SAVE LIVES!!!! Ponch was severely injured...now Dano...both were not wearing full helmets. As I said in my post....at the time we didn't even know if wearing a helmet or not was a factor so it wasn't a put down or anything else. Do you think I feel he DESERVES to be hurt for not wearing a helmet??? OF course not!!! It's been proven statistically that helmets save lives. In the same manner, it has been proven that smoking kills people. People ride without helmets....people smoke. IMHO they are both bad ideas. But, if you have a choice....I encourage you to quit smoking and wear a helmet. But again...that is just IMHO

Dano needs our prayers
Trader replied to Freebird's topic in Inspirational, Motivational, Prayer Requests, Etc.
OF course my primary concern is that Dan has a full recovery. I am sorry if I was out of line. Pointing out the lack of a helmet was not intended to be a slight to Dan in any way. We all have freedom of choice But...if being a jerk can make anyone think twice and save them from serious injury or death...then I will happily be that jerk anytime! -
DOH!! thanks for the correction...don't want to mislead anyone!

I"ll take a set for my 83 They don't need special brackets...they just screw in the same holes...at least they do on my 88

Dang, Having to settle with a insurance company again
Trader replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Watering Hole
There are two opinions on our bikes...... They are a twenty something year old bike so that means they must be pretty much worn out and not worth much They are classics and antiques. When restored and cared for they are a valuable piece of motorcycle history. Insurances generally take view #1. We owners take view #2 What's the answer? Pay the $75 to have an independant aprraiser provide you with proof of value along the lines of reasoning #2. Sounds like the woman's insurance company took view #2....which seems unusual, but maybe they wanted it hushed up in a hurry. fyi From the PA DMV website: The following words and terms, when used in this chapter, have the following meanings, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise: Act—75 Pa.C.S. § § 101—9910 (relating to the Vehicle Code). Antique motor vehicle—A motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year, which has been maintained in or restored to a condition which is substantially in conformance with manufacturer specifications. from what I've seen, many states recognize a vehicle as an antique att 25 years. -
Hmmm.....you were teasing about mine disappearing while we were working on it....maybe I should go out to the shop and check!!!! What about the side cover vent replacements...did you discuss that with your friend?

Ah....I think you forgot something:confused24:

Case of the missing vacumm
Trader replied to Marcarl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think carl was using carb cleaner and propane to test for leaking boots. He did a really thourough job of testing it and it wasn't sucking anything anywhere it shouldn't! Carl sprayed carb cleaner and blew compressed air into just about every nozzle, jet, and hose available to us with the diaphrams and slides out and the air box off.....and a few other places too! the diaphrams are like new. The idle mixture screws were about 4-5 turns out at first. We took them right out and sprayed cleaner and compressed air in the hole (what is the jet screw hole called anyway?) Then set them to 2 1/4 turns out. In our "journey" we ended up with them at about 1 1/2 turns out. The bike ended up sounding rough...but it would idle at 1000 rpm...where before it wouldn't idle at all without 1/2 choke and then at about 3000!!!!!! The ride home was uneventful....no backfiring on decel...seems to have ok pick up...no hesitation when I open throttle but it did seem to be slow coming down to idle....a couple of times I had to blip the throttle to get it to drop the idle down.....it wanted to hang up around 2200 a few times. I have a similar set up with the hoses and vacuume guage...tomorrow I'll hook them up and see if there is still no vacume. I want to see how the plugs look after my 5 hour ride also. I don't understand how it can run with no vacume???!!!- 7 replies

I'm at Jim and Sheila's home...barely. I was riding the exit ramp (exiting right) when a cager decided to exit from the middle lane...I had to jam on the brakes to get behind him or he would have side swipped me right off the road. It was interesting as there was a fine mist of rain at the time and I did some pretty agressive braking...but no harm done. Thankfully!

What I really love about those recorded message "trees"....is when you are put on hold for 20 min...then they decide you are in the wrong department....back on hold....when they finally transfer the call to the proper department you get cut off!!!!! Start all over again!!! AARRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!!:bang head: -

So all the weight of the bike and her climbing on is on the kickstand? I'm not so sure that's a good idea! Lots of posts about the kickstand bolt giving out...but maybe that's a 1st gen issue. I just hold the brake, lean over the tank and "lock" the bike with my knees. Mind you...on my bike a 31" inseam seems to be enough to get flat footed. In keeping with the theme of the thread....my wife has bailed me out a few times....I have to try and remember to leave the front brake alone when coming to a stop!
