I'll PM you with my address. I need one for me and one to replace the one I broke that belonged to Marcarl. It had already been broken and rewelded but I feel I should replace it anyway. How much for 2 with shipping?

Anybody got a shim tool I can borrow or buy? Mother (Scott) came up for a day to help me with my bike....got the clutch sorted out. We had to open the bleeder while we tightened the clutch springs. Every time we tried to put it together the push rod would end up too far out and the clutch would be frozen. Pushed in the rod but by the time we got it together it wouild be extended again. Finally we put it together and opened the bleeder while I tightened the spring. I had a shim tool here but it had been broken and rewelded and it broke on us. One thing that we can't understand....the # 2 and #3 exhaust gap are both over 50mm!!!!! How couid they get that loose?

I had an 83 Seca 900 LOVED THAT BIKE! It Came with a handle bar headlight pot fairing but I installed a full frame mount sport touring faring. 4 cyl inline, air cooled, shaft drive...handled like a dream and fast!

Took my front wheel in to get a new Avon Cobra installed....they ended up putting 33/4 ounces to balance it. That just seems like a lot....11 pieces of 1/4 oz!!!!! There already were 5 on there....they had to add 6 more. Are Avon that badly made? Is that an unusual amount?

Freebird's Maintenance Day - Do we want to do it?
Trader replied to Freebird's topic in Watering Hole
Don't forget the tent poles! -
My first bike was a 67 450 Honda. That was the model with the butt ugly "camel back" tank. It had a 4speed tranny that meant you were moving at a good clip when you shifted out of first. My buddy, Chris, had a 305 Honda Dream...unit body frame and all. I only had the bike for less than a week when this true story takes place We were out riding in the country when we met up with a guy on an enduro. He said "wanna have some fun? Follow me !" Next thing ya know we were following a trail thru the woods, my first time on dirt.....and then, like a monster rising above the trees was this hill...no..no...it was a monster! It was barren of vegetation ...maybe above the tree line? Sitting at the bottom and looking up it seemed that was a possibility although in all honesty it was probably less than 40ft high. there was a narrow path...more of a worn rut really with a rock sticking out of it that could tear out the underbelly of any street bike. The guy on the enduro let out a whoop an took off scaling that monster like it was a city sidewalk. Chris offered one last piece of advice...."keep your weight forward or you will pull a wheelie!" then with dirt and gravel flying out like a speadboat's roostertail he bobbed and weaved his way up and over and disappeared from sight. After what seemed an awfully long time, Chris appeared and stood at the crest of the hill, laughing, whooping and waving me to follow. Now my mother didn't raise no fool...so like any intelligent person, I sat there pondering my options. I could tuck my tail between my legs and return the way we came in to find my way out to the road...forever to be labelled "chicken". I could trust that I was a natural born rider, a gymnast with superior physical conditioning in the prime of my life....knowing I was capable of handling anything that came my way. I could trust my friend that he would care for me as a newbie and not expose me to anything dangerous to me or my bike. In hind sight...I never did consider why he was on foot when he finally reappeared at the top! well...I just went for it. I had no idea how much traction I would or wouldn't have, and no idea of how much throttle I would need...so I just gave it all there was to give. With the engine screaming ( and possibly me too) I launched off feeling the rear tire slipping and sliding under me. I was WOT and to be sure I had enough momentum I even shifted into 2nd on the way up. Now I have no idea how I avoided the large rock on the way up...I just know I MUST have seeing as I was still upright and moving higher. I felt the front end getting lighters and lighter but remembered Chris' admonition to keep my weight forward so I was standing on the foot pegs with the handlebars near my midriff. I crested that peak doing what I'm sure was somewhere just under the speed of sound and soared off into the unknown. Now, My buddy Chris was a tall man....6 ft 2 or so...and he always liked to wear riding boots with heels to enhance his height. I remember looking DOWN at him waving at me and thinking to myself "This looks pretty much like the same view as in a plane during take off". I later found out he wasn't waving...more like just trying to reach up to gauge how far above him I was. Remember...I was a newbie on dirt and had never jumped a bike before. Remember...I was told to keep my weight forward...which I did....all the way. Chris later told me my descent was somewhat reminiscent of a Kamakasi pilot on their final trip to glory and my normally beady little eyes had expanded into proportions not seen since Betty Boop. Much like the Apollo astronaughts, as I returned to earth I realized that a nose first re-entry was not good. I was about to get burned. In in slow motion the front wheel made contact with Mother Earth and I could see the forks begin to buckle. Then time stood still For a split second I could see a debate about the laws of physics being conducted by the various members of that poor bike. "Let it be resolved that this idiot should die. Discuss" Finally, everything that is good and right with the world prevailed and the front wheel popped up and out. The bike continued on its path for a few more yards with the me just going along for the ride. My feet were up around the rear signals and I was laying over the bars trying to decide if I should bail out or try to regain control. I'd like to think I was just doing a preliminary inspection of the front forks it in reality that is where the god of good luck came into play. I rode that bike for a few more weeks before I sold it. It just didn't seem to handle very well after that.

Well I tried the suggestion of using Peanut butter on my plastic
Trader replied to Eck's topic in Watering Hole
Peanut butter body filler? But it must be true because I saw it on VR.org:yikes: -
that commercial just proves smoking can be hazardous to your health!

OK...still no joy. I tried releasing pressure while pushing back in on the rod....but no movement at all. I guess the next step is removing the slave! I just replaced it new 2-3 years ago!

Isn't that right Hummingbird?...or was it Condor who wrestled with the table saw 2-3 years ago all this talk of normal.... you realize one man's normal is another man's looney tunes. No comment on where Pucster fits in!!!!

Grease fitting on drive shaft cover
Trader replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Puc! In your expert opinion.... I installed the 1 piece cast type shift sequence found on a 2nd gen in place of the stock 2 piece part on my 1st gen Do you think this transplant will slow my bike down? -
so what did I ever do to you? 2 days ago the only snow was a few piles that hadn't quite melted yet!!!!
-
The bike is torn apart and up on the lift. I have not pulled the clutch lever while disassembled, but I have bumped my head a couple of times on the bars. (my garage is pretty tight quarters!) Which makes me think MAYBE It was the lever I hit and did pressureize the system and move the rod. Next time I'm out there I'll try to push back on the rod while cracking the bleeder and see if it moves in at all. I'll keep you posted. Totally unrelated question..can you use brake cleaner as a general degreaser/cleaner? It works great but I don't know if it eats rubber or anything else. The engine degreaser just leaves a sudsy mess!

OK...so both baskets are out and the clutch is still jammed up. NO REASON!!! I haven't touched the clutch master or resevoir and only touched the slave to bleed it 2 squeezes worth from your suggestions. On the other side, the push pin and ball bearing are in place and in the proper order/alignment There is pressure to the slave cyl. because there is a strong stream when I pull the clutch lever and open the bleeder so I haven't kinked the clutch or crushed the fluid line. Could the slave go bad just sitting over the winter??? seems pretty unlikely.
-
No Joy! I released the clutch bleeder twice...still locked up. For sure the splined washer is above the outer basket and under the inner basket I took the spring and clutch boss off, and all the plates down to the wire. Then I thought before I pull it apart, to try to pull the clutch a little to see if the center piece moved. that is the part that pushes the clutch apart right? The clutch master pushes on the pin which pushes on the plunger with the oil ring in the center of the clutch boss. That plunger didn't budge so I'm going to tear it all apart again and try it again.

Thanks Eck.....I'm pretty sure it's all put together properly so I'll try your suggestion tomorrow afternoon!

OK....so I changed the shift segment under the clutch basket on my 88 with a solid one piece shift segment as is used in a 2nd gen. 1: I had to remove the shifter lever linkage from the inner shift shaft (left side of bike) and remove the shift linkage so it was out of the way to get the old shift segment off. But that was all reinstalled properly and it's out of the way of the clutch basket anyway. 1: I made sure that when I installed the outer clutch basket it seated properly. 2: I installed the outer clutch basket 3:I installed the thrust washer that fits the splines on top of the outer basket. It actually slips beyond the splines but I remember it was like that when I took it out because I had to align the spines to get that washer off. 4: I installed the locking tab and torqued the large nut to 50 ft/lbs From the bottom of the basket..... 1: a narrow black steel band which I know belongs there because I never removed it. 2: a half size spring plate marked "this side out: 3: half friction disk 5: steel disk 5: retaining wire 6: friction disk/steel/friction/steel etc until the last one on the top of the stack was the friction disk with the odd shaped cut out. I made sure that the 2 notch disks were all aligned with the 2 dots on the basket. 6: put the center plug on the shaft 7: put the clutch boss in place, making sure it was bottomed and sitting on that center plug. 8: Made sure the small spring retainer was sitting in the surface of the spring boss with the rim facing up to hold the spring properly 9:installed the small pressure plate with 6 bolts, 10: tightened the 6 bolts alternating opposite sides and as per Skydoc's suggestion of using reasonable pressure with the ratchet in my palm and using only my wrist to tighten. (I don't have a torque wrench suitable) I did not pull the clutch handle when it was apart t and I did not do anything with the pins from the clutch slave....although admittedly I don't remember even seeing anything. It there any chance those pins could have dropped out? OTHERWISE, WHAT DID I DO WRONG??? I can't pull the clutch in at all!

Prayers requested
Trader replied to Freebird's topic in Inspirational, Motivational, Prayer Requests, Etc.
Don, I expressed my condolences in the other thread but I wanted to address you concerns in the above paragraph. 2Tim.3:16 tells us ALL scripture is from God. Titus 1:2 tells us that God cannot lie. So you can be comforted by John 5:28,29 that promises that there will be a resurrection of all those in the grave. Our loving Heavenly Father does not condem us for what we do in our imperfect state. We are incapable of fully pleasing him because of our inherited sin and the influence of Satan. But, Satan will be abyssed during Christ's 1000 year reign. Then comes the resurrection and we regain the perfect life that Adam threw away. Only then, after we have regained perfection, Satan will be released and a final test will be put upon us. Thats when Psalms 37:10,11 will be fulfilled. Have no fear my friend! Your Mother is held securely in God's memory, she is not suffering or even conscious of anything. (Ecclesiastes 9:5) and YOU WILL SEE AGAIN. Don, you have questions and concerns...I know you are alone in hotels quite often. Take some time to find answers that make sense. Many religious teachings raise more question than answers. I Know that when you get answers to questions like "Where are the dead?" or "What is Hell" you will find great comfort. I searched for many years for answers that made sense..I went to many different faiths and their churches looking for answers. Next time one of Jehovah's Witnesses call, or you pass one of their carts, ask for a copy of "What Does the the Bible REALLY Teach?" You can also find that book in PDF format or audio file along with hundreds more, in over 600 languages on the website http://www.jw.org PLEASE check it out and once you have scriptural answers to your questions I know you will find comfort. -
I am very sorry for your loss Don. The loss of our parents is something we all have to deal with as we get older ourselves. But remember...you WILL see her again. John 5:28,29 What. Wonderful hope!

So I decided to change out the shift segment under the clutch basket because of slipping in 2nd. (my 88) I saw the clutch basket tool and in my infinite wisdom decided that it is nothing more than a steel clutch plate with a handle. So..I reasoned I could just use one of my old clutch plates along with a pair of vice grips and save myself $35 plus shipping. Might I say at this time .....DUH!!!! once again. The pressure of the "handle" against the outer clutch basket broke off one of the tabs....so now I have to get into my parts bike after all and use that one. The Parts bike is an 84....would the outter basket be the same part? PLEASE SAY YES...but only if you mean How do I remove the outer basket? Does it just come loose when I remove the inner basket or is there something more involved? Warm weather is coming and I'm not gaining any ground!
