  1. I saw where a "good ol boy" did a demo using straw and hay to clean it up. The oil stuck to the floating bio-mass then they just have to scoop up the oil/hay and take it for processing...either reclaiming the oil or perhaps burn it as fuel. It worked in the demo...hardly any oil left over. Labour intensive, heavy work to scoop up the goop....but effective!
  2. Ditto....haven't ridden for about 15 years. I"m not all that mechanically (or electrically) inclined but I've learned a lot already just sitting and reading pages and pages of post There are some twisted individuals on this site...I LIKE IT!
  3. OK....here's what I found....the switch has the plunger in it but no spring, copper collar plastic spacers or anything else! SO...anybody have a clutch switch? Needless to say...CHEAP???
  4. Thanks Dingy....the pdf file was very helpful....I thought there had to be spring action to the switch!!!
  5. I saw some waterproof bags that come complete with closer ties that double as carry handles....Glad Hefty bags! Not custom fit by any means though!
  6. is "the little button" supposed to be spring loaded?? I loosened it up...but there is no spring action to it at all.
  7. kickstand switch must be good because if the stand is down and I put it in gear it shuts off.
  8. EDITED FOR CLARITY.....First....I'm talking about my 83 VR, No cruise my bike will only start when in neutral. What a PITA!!!! I have the heel/toe shifter with some "slop" .... it seems really tricky to find neutral. So while everyone else is 1/2 mile down the road...I'm still fumbling trying to get my ride started! Every other bike I have ever owned would start as long as the clutch in...regardless of if it was in gear or in neutral! The kick stand switch works because if I kick it into gear when the stand it down it shuts the bike down. The stand indicator on the LCD screen doesn't show but that graphic does show when it cycles thru when I first turn on the key. Is there some mod I can do to let it start even if the bike is in gear as long as the clutch is in? (and side stand up) I would hope to still allow the neutral indicator to operate. I"m not real good at electrics...so if there is any fix...I would appreciate any explaination to be in simple terms for us simple people. Thanks in advance!
  9. OK guys (and gals) here's a poser for ya! If a speeder in a car is a "lead foot" or "heavy footed"....what is a biker? We "floor it" and "put the pedal to the metal" in a car...what do we do on a bike? ....somehow "heavy wristed" just doesn't cut it.
  10. sounds better than the solution the guy I bought my 83 from was using....he had the side cover and lower faring taped with clear tape! If the bike is well shined you can hardly see it! I'll be ordering a PLASTEX repair kit and trying that out to replace some of the tabs and grommets on the plastic.
  11. Thanks Bubber! Now I'll be able to hear my wife scream much more clearly! OMG WHAT HAVE I DONE??!!!! She still hasn't forgiven me for taking her for a scrape the first time we were on a bike together 30 years ago! She used to go out with a motocross champion and said she had her fill of bikes already. I had my 500 suzuki set up for performance not for passengers....we were in a tight corner and hit roller coaster bumps. The back end bottomed out and spit out from under us....No major damage or injuries but needless to say...she wasn't impressed! Maybe it was because I told her "it was all that extra weight" ! She married me anyway...but never really liked bikes. Thats why I bought the VR...figured it would be slow and like a couch on wheels! I was 1/2 right!
  12. seems most of the 1st Gen VR that I've seen on EBay lately seem to be going for $1600 plus
  13. If for any reason the deal doesn't go...I would be interested!!!!
  14. We were wiped out by a bus (I was a passenger on my buddy's bike) on a major highway...he hit a 4x4 road sign post as he was rolling and was dead before we got to the hospital. If he was in a cage he would have been just fine. I ended up with a few bumps and bruises..not much else other than the psycho side of it. Most of us have injuries from various causes...they heal. For about 2 years after the accident every time I heard screeching rubber...brakes or acceleration...I would "brace for impact"...cold sweats and all ...but eventually....that too passes. If biking is something near and dear to you...something that you just can't imagine doing without...then I'm sure your wife will understand. That's what love is all about! It is just her fear talking!. She too will get over that.
  15. you can go to just about any reputable (and many not so reputable) sign shops and they can cut vinyl decals in just about any colour...or print and cut if you want multi colour. I used to take a clients photograph, import it into my sign making program (Flexi) and uses it as the background for the graphics I created. Then once it is all designed...just cut it out (or print and cut) I'd offer to help out..but I don't have my equipment set up anymore.
  16. If you are ever up this way...you just have to ride this circuit. from Kingston, Take 38 N to Godfrey = Westport Road. Westport Road to Westport...great town for lunch, tourist stop...on the Rideau Lake From Westport, take the mountain access that leads to Bolingbroke....eventually comes out at Crow Lake...you end up back to #38 about 10 miles north of where you started. Total trip is about 1 hr 15 min (from Godfrey) It is a nice ride...lots of twisty roads, lakes and nice scenery!
  17. I'm 45 min N. of Kingston....about 3 hrs from Montreal. I've just had my 83 VR about a month....AND LOVING IT! Lots of twisty roads around here...lakes, rocks and trees (which might not be a good thing!LOL I know there is a member in Cornwall too.
  18. Thanks David! I had a hard time because of the sand...Just as I got the bike to the apex, my feet kept pushing out from under me! I ended up using a block and tackle I found in my client's cottage. Hopefully I won't ever need to pick it up again.
  19. The oily carb is the Back left when sitting on the bike...probably was overfilled before I got it....window was totally filled.
  20. I just got my 83 a few weeks ago....after not riding for about 20 years....and I have already had an "experience" (sigh) I was in the middle of no-where going to do a job at a clinet's cottage ...puttin' along at VERY low speed on their laneway...turned a sharp corner and the front wheel washed right out on me...turns out it was soft sand under the grass! Thanks to soft sand and crash bars there was no damage (except my pride). ANYWAY....2 questions 1)is it possible for the clutch fluid to have leaked out while it was on it's side? It was on more than 45-50 degree angle for about 20 min (until I could get it up...is there viagra for heavy bikes?) After I got it upright, the clutch wasn't disengaging properly...checked the fluid when I got home and it was almost empty! Had to refill and bleed the system. 2) there is an oily residue on just one of the carbs, (I think on the intake side) is that an indication of blow by or something major? (rings, valve seals??)
  21. If you give me the information you want to track I could edit a MS Exel spreadsheet for you so it will have exactly the information you want. You can do almost anything with exel if you know how! (and I ALMOST do! ) you can email me at shaynes@advantads.com
