I found a brand new engine! .... It just happened to be sitting in a new 2013 RSV with 32 miles on it. It lives at my place now. My thanks to all who offered advice and/or provided assistance. Steve

In retrospect, I realize that this situation could have had a much more serious outcome. Instinct was the predominant response. I think the StarFan is correct. The engines & carbs are the same. Now searching the internet......

Thanks StarFan and cowpuc Mechanic said it still had plenty of oil in it. The only leakage was above the case break. I don't really have the facility, tools, and even the energy to do the work myself, so I'll have to let the bike shop do it. I'm just not sure how confident I'm going to be using an engine of unknown past.......

2006 RSTD with 47k miles On Saturday at 4 PM, I was doing 70 on the Interstate when I heard and/or felt (don't remember actually) a loud noise. Instinctively, I grabbed a handful of clutch and coasted the bike to the shoulder. As traffic whizzed by, a quick inspection revealed oil leaking to the ground. I managed to get a flatbed to pick me up and get me to the dealer just as they were closing, so we had no time to investigate. The shop was closed until yesterday. Today I learned that the engine case had been penetrated from the inside by what appeared to be the counter-balancer or one of it weights. Not good. I went over there to see it and sure enough there was an internal part poking out of the broken engine case. Dealer and regional service folks say they have never seen this, and have no idea of the why/how. Anyone ever hear of this kind of thing? Mechanic is suggesting install of a used motor rather than the expense of trying to rebuild this one. It seems the engine case alone cost $2200, and there is certainly more damage inside. Where to source a used/rebuilt motor? Pretty bummed out at the moment.....

I have the standard version on my RSTD that 99% of the time is ridden solo. A couple of times a year I pack a bag and strap it to the pillion seat.... -

This morning in North Alabama was absolutely perfect for riding - 70 deg and not even a hint of humidity. Had my coffee and decided I didn't want to waste a minute of this beautiful day. Got dressed, and took my morning meds as I did a quick pass through the kitchen, on the way to the garage. Well, three miles from the house, as I was basking in the glory of being on two wheels on such a great day, it happened. I was stopped at a light, and it seemed like everything went into slow motion. I felt the bike leaning over to the left, slowly going down, and I had no way to stop it. It kind of layed itself down gently. Suddenly, I was standing there next to the bike in the middle of the road. A bystander ran over and helped me pick it up, I thanked him and off I went for about 4 hours of pure enjoyment. Now the odd thing is that after returning home I realized that I could not remember what route I took in the first few hours of the ride or why the hell I did not stop after the bike decided to take its nap. While I am getting the CRS syndrome, I have never drawn a blank like this..... Then, on a pass back through the kitchen, I noticed that the Fri. PM compartment on my weekly pill container was open. I stared at that little square compartment for several moments.....trying to tell myself that I did not take my evening meds this morning. It was clear that I had, in fact, done so, and as my evening meds contain sleep medication, I put myself and others on the road in significant jeopardy today. Attention to detail, attention to detail, attention to detail! I will be paying a lot more attention to detail when I take my meds from now on!

I just want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to Eck for his assistance yesterday. Eck and I met for the first time on Sunday for lunch, and Monday morning he was at my home to assist with some needed work on the bike! Hours later, my bike had the brakes and clutch lines full on nice clear fluid, and the drive shaft & rear end cleaned and lubed. Grease, dirt, physical exertion, great conversation, laughter, and instruction are indicative of the fellowship and camaraderie that exemplify the culture of the members here. A tip of the hat to Eck, and my thanks for all his effort and help! Steve:cool10:

Looking at the wiring diagram that Dingy posted, I note that there is a filter on the power to the cooling fan motor. Does anyone know where this is physically located on an RSTD? I suddenly have interference from the fan in a J&M CB..... Many thanks....

Type less, Say more.... 2006 RSTD + J&M CB + Mr. Gasket 42S = Interference Interference is being radiated from the power wiring and entering the CB thru the antenna. Trust me. Solution: AutoZone: Duralast F1598 Condenser - about $6.00 Connect Condenser wire to hot lead (blue wire) going to Mr. Gasket 42S. Mount Condenser body to grounded location (I enlarged hole to mount as shown). 90% solution.

PGunn and Flyinfool: Thanks for the info! Mine do not have a hex head. They have a tall metric bolt head....can't remember size at the moment. Not sure if that is the only difference (size/thread pitch/length) from the thread started by iquester for his '97...............

Yea, a little frustrating. I'll have to pull the good one apart tonight after work and take it up to the hardware store to try and figure out the size. I must admit I've never seen a bolt like it in any hardware store......
