Yamaha Royal Star Venture - Models 2001 vs. 2007

One more thing to check - verify the washer on the rear axle is in the correct position relative to the brake mounting bar - on the OUTSIDE of the rear brake caliper bracket. Occasionally someone puts them on the inside. Goose -
We ain't got stink for rain over by the airport - not yesterday, not today, and probably not tomorrow. My yard needs water, so I know danged well it ain't gonna rain untill I spend the money watering it myself! Goose

I do use that search button a lot, but the problem is not exclusively related to that. When I experienced it last night I was just trying to open a thread. And I have had times in the past that I had several tabs in different browser windows clocked on this site at the same time. I use IE7 exclusively as my browser - not because I like it, but simply because as bad as it is, it still has far fewer problems for me than either FireFox or Opera. Goose

If it is just a scuff mark instead of deep scratches that you can feel with your fingernail, you should be able to easily polish it out with mild polishing compound. One of my favorites is Kit brand Scratch Out. Don't try it by hand - you will need either a foam pad or wool pad on an electric drill if you don't have a real orbital polisher. Goose

Just hit me - 0900 on the dot - took over 4 minutes to respond to a "New Posts" search. Trace routes from before and during the event showed similar times - there are some nasty latencies at one hop, but only about 120ms, and clearly not causing this multi-minute delay. Goose
-
The long delays happen at all times of day for me. So far none this morning (been on for about 10 minutes now). The last one I hit lasted for several minutes last night around 10:51 pm. I guess I'll start posting exact times when I see it, just in case that helps pinpoint anything. Goose

The biggest problem with this is making sure you can actually read the temp of the specific cylinder. A water cooled bike makes this much harder because the water is the same temperature everywhere, even if a specific cylinder is not firring. That is why I suggested the finger test directly on the header pipe next to the exhaust valve. If you are going to use the IR thermometer, best bet is to direct the beam onto the clamp for the header pipe. My Sears model has a lazer that aids in aiming it that would allow this. Goose

The trailer cannot be blamed for that bad mileage. Something is wrong. The easiest answer would be a bad coil or fouled plug. Start the bike cold and withing one minute, touch the header pipes (NOT the chrome heat shields) near the exhaust valves. Don't wait more than a minute after starting or the heat from a good cylinder will be enough to burn you. All four pipes should be very hot, but allow your finger to touch them for about 1 second without injury. If any pipe is not that hot, you have found the problem. Goose

I occasionally do this by inserting a link from Photobuckert: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b289/V7Goose/Flagmount4.jpg In this case I just clicked on the "IMG Code" box, which automatically copies the link, then pasted it into the reply. Frankly, I like these pictures better thn the thumbnails, but I usually am too lazy to go to the trouble to put the pix on Photobucket first, then copy that link. Goose

Hey Don, over the past month or so I have been having an increasing number of LONG load times on pages here, sometimes it is clocked for several minutes, sometime it finally returns an error (usually a browser error). These happen at least two or three times every time I visit the site now. When these are happening, I can switch to another window or tab and access all other web sites perfectly, so it really doesn't seem to be my network or ISP. I haven't tried to run a trace route on the forum site yet, so it's possible it is a network bottleneck somewhere between North Texas and the hosting company. Just thought I'd post this here to see if others are seeing the same types of problems before I do anything else. Goose

Please tell me you didn't ask that! PLEASE tell me you ain't no fair weather biker! Come on now, ANY day is a good day to ride if you're not just a poser. The worst day riding is better than the best day not riding. End of subject! Goose

Some here have reported they did the whole take-off and replace thing, but I don't know how much they paid. In hind sight, I wish I had done that on my 05 instead of waiting for the horrible stock tires to wear out. But I didn't realize how much of an improvement I would get until I actually replaced them, so being a naturally cheap guy, I waited until I needed tires. On the plus side, it gave me lots of opportunity to test and record changes from different tires and combinations. Oh well ... Goose

I love the feel of the Venoms on wet concrete highways, completely solid and reassuring.

If you are not pulling our collective legs, I'd be concerned with that strange thing ya got there. The biggest issue is that all these carbs do NOT use the same jets, so if they were mounted backward (don't even know if that is possible), then there is more fouled up than the choke! Goose

My navigator naps regularly on long rides - never has been a problem on the RSV! There seems to be plenty of support to allow her to get a good night's rest without bothering me at all. Goose

Well, there are V-twins, and then there are V-twins. If it is a Moto Guzzi, I might think it was a reasonable decision; if it is a Star, I'd probably consider it reasonable; if it is a Bulovard Cruiser, I possibly would consider is reasonable; if it is a Victory (but NOT a Vision), I'd almost certainly think it is reasonable; but if it is one of those other things ... Well, it is always a shame to see such proof of the old saying that the mind is the first thing to go! Goose

Personally, I rufuse to put ANYTHING in my tires but air. I believe that if there was value and not bad in stuff to stick in there, the tire companies would have long ago decided to start selling it themselves to sock in that extra profit they would get by endorsing any particular product, whether it is for balance or puncture seal. HOWEVER, even after saying all that, this is one situation where I MIGHT consider adding a puncture-seal product to my tire, just for added insurance. Just something to think about. For me, it would all depend on what the initial damage looked like and how I happened to be thinking on that particular day. Like I said up front, I normally refuse to consider adding a foreign substance to my tires. Goose

Hey all, this is an emotionally charged issue. I know that I have very strong feelings about it, as do many of you. We have had a chance to express our thoughts here, but I doubt that there is much new to add. At this point, no one is going to be persuaded to change their view on the subject from this thread. My concern is that the comments are beginning to get pretty personal and verge on insulting each other. Each new jab seems to require another personal barb from someone else. This can be very destructive to what we have here as a group on this site. Why don't we all just back of this topic and let it die a natural death here, OK? Thanx! Goose

Hard starting when cold? How would you know?? Ain't no cold around here! Choke in June?????? If I so much as THINK about choking my RSV this time of year it starts hacking and coughing on me. Ain't no choke for me. Goose

Yamaha Royal Star Venture - Models 2001 vs. 2007
V7Goose replied to dharnie's topic in Watering Hole
You implied in your For Sale posting that your 07 was purchased new, so I'll just assume that the suspension is all set up as stock and in proper condition. We cannot assume that for the older bike. I would suggest you start by letting all the air out of the forks - not having them EXACTLY equal is a major impact on proper handling, and the fastest, most accurate test here is to run them at 0. Then I'd check the proper tightness of all suspension related bolts, especially the axle pinch bolts, axle nuts, fork pinch bolts, shock bolts, etc. Make sure nothing on the suspension has been modified, including the height, front and back. Make sure the tires have been properly seated on the rims. If you check the tire right next to the rim, you should see several concentric lines or small ridges that are designed to give you a visual confirmation that the tire has evenly seated all the way around. Improperly seated tires are not that uncomon. Checking tire pressure should be obvious, but I mention it to cover all bases. Lastly, from the way you describe the differences in the two bikes, I personally would strongly suspect the older bike has been in a significant accident and not properly repaired. Good luck in figuring out what is wrong. Goose -
OK, you guys have me really confused now. I was thinking that since I have not been hit by a 747 while riding my bike (or even an 18-wheeler, for that matter), that I had proof that QUIET pipes were a safety feature???? No? Goose

I usually cook pretty good on wet freeways - usually continue to pass most of the cars that are slowing down. In the twisties I slow down a bit, but still move along. In all conditions, even when the water sheets are so bad I actually have to slow down just to see, the Avons have NEVER hydroplaned or given me any hint of instability in those conditions. Goose

Yamaha Royal Star Venture - Models 2001 vs. 2007
V7Goose replied to dharnie's topic in Watering Hole
Yup, there is a difference in your pictures alright, but I can't explain it. My 05 and my 07 had the same levers, and they looked like the ones on your 07. Frankly, when you said "shift and brake levers", I thought you were talking about the FOOT levers. Oh well, it's no big deal. I was mostly puzzled by your reference to an RSV with the horrible Brickstone tires handling well, but who's to say what feels bad to one person has to feel bad to all? Not me, even if it is puzzling! I'm sure you will find plenty of lightly used Brickstone takeoffs to put on that 01 if that is what you want. Ride safe Goose -
Noise Annoys. Just thought I'd weigh in with the other side of the debate. IMHO, the only thing loud pipes do is make otherwise good people hate all bikers because of the inconsiderate few. Well, the squids trick riding on public roads do that too, but you get my meaning. Goose
