Boots are good. Looked at butterflys with the engine off and they snap back with the grip. If I pull in the clutch at 5k to shift RPM's stay at 5K until I let off the clutch. If I just hold in the clutch they float slooowwly back down.

Eventually I will get all the bugs out of this thing. Was out for a ride after synching carbs and my tach started to bounce a little. About 30 miles later- everything went out- except the speedo. No tach, no computer, no voltage, no turn signals. The computer would start cycling through after a short time and the tach reappeared then the whole process started again. Now it's off more than it's on. Does the computer display board control everything? Should I be looking for a loose/dirty connector or could the board be bad? How hard is it to get to? My cruise went out as well. All lights come on when powered on, all turn off but power. Can't get set or resume light to come on or function. Thanks for all the advice. It's coming together. 86VR 22,000

The throttle snaps back without hesitation. Makes a sharp "click" when it bottoms. Checked while bike was off.

I'm sure they could use a lube. What's weird is if I back the adjuster by the left side carbs out so it does not touch the cable, my idle is at about 400 but the rpms come back down just fine while riding or revving. Just hard to keep running at that low of an idle. As soon as I turn in the adjuster to increase the idle, the rpms "float" down.
-
Anybody run into this? If I set the idle to 950-1000 with the adjuster screw, the RPMS are very slow to come back down after revving. When I ride, I shift and the RPMs stay prettty much where they were when I pulled in the clutch. Running good otherwise.

Steering stem nut size
WiVR replied to WiVR's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thats it. Thanks. What a pain to get at the pinch bolts. My top nut above the rubber washer was spinning freely. Much better now. Thanks -
Does anyone know the size of the socket required for the big nut that holds the steering crown on (big top nut)? I don't see the size in the svc manual. I have to buy a socket tomorrow morning to get it off and would like to make just one trip. Kevin

Going to try that. Going to drain the bowls and let the pump suck in seafoam then let it sit. i've never used techron before. Like to make the "cheater" method work before thinking about removing carbs.

Right on. It's the rear right. Any way to shake it loose without taking it apart (off the bike)? Thanks

I was thinking that too but wouldn't the leak be coming from the front of the bike? The gas is streaming from near the upper rear shock mount and running down the front of the shock coil.

I am slowly getting this thing up and running. 86 VR 21000 miles. Does not leak when off or with key in on position. Shortly after I start the bike, gas starts running down the front coil of the rear shock and pukes out on the ground. I have pulled the fuel pump and tried to trace back all the gaslines I can see. Looks like it's leaking from above the rear shock mount and down the front of the shock? Cant see the actual leak. The PO left the tank on reserve and I have not moved it. I drained all the gas at the fuel pump and put a bit in today to get the bike running. Thanks for any suggestions.

Getting closer. Cleaned Pilot jet 1 and 2 with a wire and some air. Put original spacers back on needles. Was able to synch and set idle pretty close. Runs great under hard acceleration. I didnt do the mixture screws but am sure they could be cleaned too. I am going to continue with seafoam and see if that cleans it up. Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I have a heavy gas leak when the bike is running- will start a new thread.

I may try switching back tomorrow to the plastic spacers. I pumped seafoam in through the fuel pump and am going to let it soak overnight. Could it be the pilot jets and can they be accessed without removing the carbs from the bike? I would prefer not to mess around with the air mixture screws if I can help it- they still have the plugs over them.

This is my day to work on this bike. It is new to me, an 86 with 20,000 miles. When I picked it up, it wouldn't idle without choke, but ran pretty good on the road without choke. I just replaced the 4 diaphrams and did the 2 ss washer mod on the needles. 1 of the diaphragms was completely seperated from the slide and all had a few holes. Now the bike will not run without choke and if I rev it it wants to die. Will not stay running without choke and backfires a little while running. I have to adjust the idle with the choke. Seems like its running too lean. Trying to synch the carbs but can't get it to go without the choke. The indicators on the carbtune are moving but don't seem to be too high up on the gauge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin

My front left/back brake was locking up after about 25 miles of riding. This morning I decided to do cowpuc's brake master cleaning. Everything went pretty good till I checked the reservoir level. Popped out the filler bolt and all I see is the rubber diaphragm. Don't see any fluid at all. I just picked up this bike (86) and would really like to get this fixed. Will I need to remove the reservoir completely and if so how bad is that job? It looks pretty tight just to get the top cover off. Thanks

New 86 VR idle problems, CLASS question
WiVR replied to WiVR's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for all the suggestions. Just what I was looking for. On the front air suspension- I have not taken the fairing apart yet but I can see a capped air hose between the front of the tank cover and the steering stem. A little to the right. Is this a manual valve just in case or is it possible the PO disconnected class? Thanks -
Stopped in a dealer a few days ago just to look around. Found an 86 VR with 21,000 miles stuffed in a corner. Unfortunately I took it for a test drive (dealer had to jump it). Made a lowball offer and now I own it. Anyway, it has some issues I need to fix. Bike will idle with choke on , although it pops a bit when cold. When it warms up, backing off the choke causes a slowing idle until it finally dies. Could this be clooged/dirty pilot jets and will Seafoam cure the problem? Seems to run great off idle and all the way to redline. Second, Class is dead. No display at all (on ACC). Looks like a loose airline has been ziptied up near the front of the plastic gas tank cover. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Now I need to sell my 84. Thanks Kevin

OK thanks- so is the (170-16154-02) just part of the description and the 90201-252k4 the actual PN? Thanks again

I tried to order these two parts with a local Yamaha dealer and he said he can't find the "new" part numbers handwritten on the tech bulletin PDF. Has anyone successfully ordered the upgraded washers and if so, what are the part numbers? Thanks
