  1. I always use a test light along with the meter. It is good to have a load on the circuit.
  2. If all I am doing to the bike is an oil change, I will back up the rear tire on a 2x4. Have another 2x4 handy to slip under side stand. 1 1/2 inches higher makes a word of difference. Remember when you check the oil, the oil has to be hot to get the correct reading. I check mine after a good long ride.
  3. Your lag doesn't seem normal to me. I am pretty sure mine does not act that way. Try turning the traction control off. There may be a problem with the wire or a sensor on the throttle control.
  4. Like your input. Your starting problem is probably the battery. Dealer can test it.
  5. 62 lbs is way to tight. All I ever did was snug them up good. If you torqued them to 62 ft lbs I don't think you will get them out.
  6. If I remember correctly they are 5mm allen wrench. I would take my best 5mm allen socket on a 3/8 drive extension and insert it into bolt and then pinch the outside with a vise grip and try to turn it.
  7. Nice job Kent, I may do something similar this winter.
  8. Don't see any pics. Would like to see them
  9. I had a similar problem on my 2007 RSV. Had to remove carbs twice and never found anything. I did spend a lot of time inspecting needle and seat and also readjusted floats using Vgoose's method and never had another problem. Vgoose float adjustment should be in the tech library. I also changed the routing on the vent lines as I found a spot where I thought they might be pinched a little.
  10. I have friends with Harleys and Indians and there belts are a lot looser than the Venture even though their belt specs are almost the same as Yamaha's spec. I always pull the front pully cover and inspect belt position there. If it is close to the center I am happy.. The bike came with the belt tight on the outside of both the front and rear pulley which isn't correct. I have a little noise in the 30-35 mph range but I think it is gear whine from the tranny.
  11. Two things come to my mind right away. Kill switch and starter relay. The starter relay has been known to corrode up and cause problems. If the kill switch was on you should still get power to dash but nothing else.
  12. Thank You Still on the fence on whether I should do it or not.
  13. most of them will work. Just have to take some measurments. I bought one made by Saddleman. Works pretty good except I had to replace the velcro with better velcro. Didn't stick for long.
  14. Sounds like were good to go.
  15. What do you mean by 'tried a restart and nothing'. It is normal for all the lights to come one when the key is turned on. They go out when start button is pressed. The fuel pump can fail when hot. When bike cools down the pump will start working and bike will start. We really need more info. How many miles on machine? Will it start now?
  16. Getting off subject-how do you like your horns? They look a little large for an install on the Venture. Do you have any pics?
  17. There is a map update posted in the Yamaha toolbox. Some of the members on the Yamaha facebook page have purchased it and results are mixed. There is a $99 charge for this. With all the problems that this gps has had I am not sure if I would buy it. If Yamaha would step up and fix the bugs with this system it might be worth it. I am thinking of going to a seperate gps. Perhaps a garmin or tomtom.
  18. Haven't heard of that one before. Are you at latest firmware? Should be 12. something. I had a problem with gps freezing up earlier this year and had to delete all saved data in gps to fix it. Check your battery connections to make sure they are tight as I have heard of this causing wierd infotainment issues.
  19. You always get great toys to test. I am jealous.
  20. Ah, Fool figured out our problem for preoiling the filter. Yamaha has had some lifter-cam issues on this engine. We don't know the exact number of them and we really don't know why they failed. I don't think it was due to lack of lubrication at startup, I think it was some poorly made parts. I have over 18,000 miles on mine now and it runs better now than it did when new. Long Haul Paul had over 100,000 miles of his Star Venture when he sold it and had zero problems. We could speculate on this all day but time will tell. I guess we will just have to keep on riding and enjoy it while we still can.
  21. Yes, had gas coming out of overflow hose on right side of bike behind air filter housing. Ran like crap with poping from the exhaust on decel. Draining all gas and starting with fresh fuel sounds like a good idea also. Changing fuel filter would be good as we don't know if you got a bunch of crap in tank. Should be able to match up a filter at any auto parts store or even a hardware store.
  22. I had this same thing happen a couple of times on my 2007 RSV. Pretty sure it is a stuck float or a piece of crap between needle and seat. What I did to clear it was take a long screwdriver and tap on inside of carbs. You will have to work on opposite side of carbs as overflow hose crosses. Take your screwdriver or other long tool and insert it on same side as leaking overflow tube. Run tool to other side of carbs and tap on both carbs. Do this while it is running. If this doesn't work, start bike and turn off gas. Run bike untill it runs out of gas. Turn gas back on and start bike. May have to do this more than once, you are trying to flush out carb bowl.
