2018 Star Venture
sldunker replied to Rafterd's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
I was looking at the trunk rack for the new Venture. Looks like a really nice rack. Then I read that it is only rated for 4.4 pounds. The top trunk lid must be made pretty flimsy to only support 4 pounds. Kind of surprised. Makes it almost useless. -
Not what I mean. If one stator goes bad are we going to have replace both stators. Kinda like headlights on a car. One burns out, then a short time later the other burns out. I am thinking that these stators are going to be expensive unless aftermarket ones are available. Unless the two stators are sold as one unit(paired). Bet that is expensive.
-
Paired alternators. Was reading through all the specs and this caught my eye. I assume it is just 2 stators. So if your riding in November in the northern US and all your heated acc are turned on and one of the stators dies will the extra load kill the other stator also? It may not kill it instantly but I wonder how long it would last with that kind of load on it.

Remove the black plastic cap from the fuel pump and inspect the points. If they are fried, that should be your problem. Replacement points are available from places like JP cycles, Dennis Kirk or Amazon. After going thru several sets of points I replaced the points on mine with a circuit board made by a guy in Europe. The circuit board should last as long as the bike. I could only get about 25,000 miles out of a set of points. Good Luck.

Actually we don't know how lucky we are. We now have 3 different versions of Ventures to pick from. We have Ventures with liquid cooled V4, shaft drive and real adjustable handlebars. We have midnight Ventures and pain jane Ventures. We also have a brand spanky new Venture with a air cooled V Twin with belt drive and a plefora of features. Take your pick. Lucky us. We got a few weeks where we can bash the new Venture or praise it. Once it comes out and we get a chance to ride it, we can either bash it or praise it. Did I say how lucky we are. I can recall a conversation I had with my dealer about a new Venture last summer. He was hoping they would put in the Strat motor so they could lower the CG. He also said that that engine had tremendous power and should work well in a touring bike. Guess he was right, so far. I am disappointed in the air cooled motor but I am going to ride one and then I can bash or praise it. Boy, am i lucky.

I am really disappointed with the air cooled VTwin engine. Trying to figure out what Yamaha means when they say emotional VTwin performance. I can live with most of the other stuff, but that engine just turns me off. Guess I will have to ride one to be persuaded otherwise.

I think that the problem is the new gas cans are not vented. Some guys I know have put tire valve stems in the gas can to use as a vent.

Cruise control relay location?
sldunker replied to AAA515's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Before you dig to far into the bike, I would take it for a drive and push out on the clutch and brake levers. Then try to set it. Each lever has a switch to kill cruise if they are pulled in. Sometimes the levers stick a little and don't push the switch all the way in. If switch is not all the way in cruise will not work at all. -
Hope you heal quickley. Terrible thing to happen. Good Luck!

Power issue mid RPM
sldunker replied to RoyalRider05's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The video is were I saw the external type air filter. I had assumed prior to that, the K&N filters that were installed were the direct stock replacements. My mistake and I know what happens when you assume something. -

I could of sworn you said the K&N filters had been on for a long time. Is this one of the things you changed this spring? These bikes don't like changes on the intake side of carbs. Just saying. -

If this bike ran good back in October and the only change you did to it was install harley mufflers, I guess that is were I would go back to. I would put stock mufflers back on and try it. If all your plugs are white then the problem is affecting all 4 cyclinders at the same time. Usually if carbs are dirty you will always have one or two carbs that arn't to bad and plugs will read different. I am starting to believe problem is outside of carbs, but where. -

If you used a ethenol based gas what MiCarl said holds true. Time to clean carbs. -

When you parked it last October was the entire fuel system treated with stabilizer. It sounds like your pilot jets are partially plugged. -

You said you just got it back together. What did you have apart? -
Amsoil PI is a excellent product. I have used it to soak plugged jets and it will clean them up.

Sounds interesting. I say go for it.

No errors yet. Using firefox

Too bad Yamaha can't figure out how to build something like that. They would have sold a ton of them. That is very well done. Congrats.

It is pretty amazing how a post can start out on one topic and end up something entirely different. Happens all the time. I think it is funny.

So, what was this post originally about?

I have come across another option. I have been replacing the points about every 23,000 miles. I have about $120 invested in points that I have installed between two fuel pumps. The reason for two pumps is one is a spare. I would change out pump as soon as I started having problems. I am a member of Adventure Rider forum. There is a guy there call Dr_Bean that has come up with a small printed circuit board with a photoelectric sensor that replaces the point set on Mitsubishi fuel pumps. According to people that have installed this kit, it will last for years. I took a chance and ordered this kit for 42 euro(about $49). I installed it on Tuesday 8-30. I have put about 500 miles on it and it works really well. Only time will tell how long it will last. Anyone else that is interested should Google 'Dr Bean fuel pump kit' and it should show all the info. Just passing along the info.

There are bearings in your shock linkage that could be getting dry but I don't think that would cause a buzzing noise. Maybe a loose bolt in the shock linkage that would cause a buzz. I had a buzz coming from the front of my RSV and it turned out to be one of the front blinker lenses being slightly loose. That would only buzz at certain rpm's. You could check your rear lenses and make sure they are not loose. I found my loose lens by just tapping on parts with my fingers and hands. Sound travels so your buzz could be coming from anywhere on the bike. Good Luck
