    The catalytic converter is 3 1/2" long. You should be able to find a long drill bit at a hardware store, like ACE. Better yet, harbor freight. It really isn't that bad of a job. When you drill the holes, just keep them as close to each other as you can. Go for it, Steve

    A standard length bit will not work. you need one that's about 12" long. Should be easy to find one. The catalytic converter itself is quite long, can't say for sure, but maybe 5". I could measure the one I drilled out when I get home. Steve

    I drilled my catalytic converter out. (06 RK) Just use a long 1/4", or so, drill bit and drill a series of holes around the OD of the converter and punch it out from the other end with a long pipe or bar. No big deal. Use plenty of cutting oil, and then when you start it up, don't panic when it smokes like crazy. It's just burning up all that cutting oil. Steve

    Great information Eck! Thanks. I was going to ask the same question. my front brakes make a terrible noise sometimes. 05 RSTD with 9500 miles on it. discs feel smooth. I'll look this winter when I change tires. Steve

    Well, if you don't mind a wisconsin guy butting in here, the mountains of WV is a place I'd love to ride, and you guys are a group I'd love to go riding with some time. Rode through SW Wisconsin last weekend, and the colors are starting to turn here. Maybe next year, Went through there once and bought a turkey call, killed a bunch of turkeys with that call. Gorgeous country!!! Steve

    Hi Shep, Couple of comments, first about the muffllers that have a rumble. get a set of HD roadking mufflers, slash cuts, and drill them out. You should be able to get a set for free or almost free and they sound great. Squidly makes a set of adapters to mount them, and well worth the $. I've heard those barons, and they are loud! Sound great though-- About lowering, I put the barons rear lowering kit on my 05 RSTD and I love it. i was going to lower the front also, but decided that I like the feel the way it is. One comment about lowering the front of a RSTD, you can't slide the tubes up an inch like you can on a venture. Different set up, with the guage and all. You would have to buy the barons front lowering kit. I also put on the Yamaha driving lights, very nice, and I know there is a tech tip on doing it. Steve

    Hey, I think it is a great idea. me and my friend were just talking about doing the same thing a while back. I have been thinking of putting a car tire on the back of my RSTD. Just look at what Burt Munro did shaving the tire on his Indian and set a world record that still stands. I know it's not a car tire, but the fact that he shaved it. Be sure and post pics if you do it. Steve

    My question would be, how would they know, if you rode down, picked up the trailer, and rode back with it? Would they really know that you came down without one? Steve

    This is what happened to my 86VR. The fan mount had moved / bent forward slightly and caused the fan to bind and not turn. I put one washer under the mounting tabs on each side and that took care of it. I checked it in my driveway by letting it get hot and watching the fan turn on. Good luck, Steve

    On my 86 VR, I ran 0 air pressure in the front and 15 in the rear. You can add air manually. No problem. Have a great ride! I did the same thing a few years ago. Took a train out to NY and road it back home. 900 miles. First time on a VR. Had a fantastic trip. Good luck with your new bike and don't worry about the CLASS.     My owners manual for my 05 RSTD says dot 4, and what is what I used in my rear brake. Now my clutch fluid is getting dark, so I will change it with dot 4. Steve

    I'm 15 mi south of Devils Lake and when we head towards Wildcat mt, we just point our bikes that way and take any road that sounds/looks good. Eventually we end up there. If you have a gps, just pick shortest route and you will find some fantastic roads. You've been to Rocton, so you know about that. Good burger and cold beer. When are you going?     Hey, I'm really glad to hear you two guys in particular talking about 404's. I put a pair of maxxis WWW's on my 05 RSTD last year, and they look great, ride fine, but after 5M, the rear is shot. The front is just OK. I'm sure that the way I ride has something to do with it, just love the sound of those drilled out RK's when I get on it. I have been thinking of getting some Dunlop's, 404's, but don't really want the wide front tire. I might, but if I got the Dunlop Cruisermax front, 130/90-16 and the 404WWW rear then I'd have what I want. I haven't ruled out the wide front though. Do you guys have a comment on the 404WWW front, 150/80/16? the tread pattern on front and rear 404's are different anyways. Thanks, Steve

    Johanne, Thanks for the update on your dad. When I met your dad last year at PIP, his beautiful white bike and trailer were full of grasshoppers from riding across the plains of Canada. I'm glad to hear he is responding to you and on the mend. Give him a big HI from EagleEye! Steve
