Well, in all fairness Yamaha's plan with a sight gauge was for it to put on the center stand to check oil level and/or conduct maintenance. Then if that was there plan, just maybe it should have come with one. just sayin

I repaired the top box on my 86 VR and a friends box using fiberglass cloth and epoxy on the inside. It was stronger than ever. Man those are really busted up. I'm not sure how you would deal with the outside. Good luck

I've got the same bike and the exact thing happened to me. Long story short, my battery died instantly, just like that. Replaced it and all was well.

In your first post, you ruled out everything except brake/clutch fluid and fluid from the rear shock. What part of the bike is directly over the puddle? And why do you have plastic on the floor under the bike? One of the properties of plastic is it draws moisture. Not good maybe. I was going to say taste it, but maybe a dog peed there.

I don't know the answer, but I took mine off years ago when I realized that there were beautiful machined rotors behind those boring ugly covers, and like you didn't notice a difference.
