  1. thank you for the reply.. I did check for the sucking sound and didn't get it when I filled up after it started the first time.. all lines are good too. I am running the fuel mixture out of a can, so there can be no vapor lock (for lack of a better term) or petcock issues and the problem persists.. I was thinking filter also, but, isn't it before the pump?? and if the pump if filling the carb bowls, the filter should be good... also in my testing, now bike with full choke will start with the normal high rev burst then die. will not idle anymore.. I cant imagine 4 floats crapping out at the same time.. but then again, I did have two coils die hours apart from each other.. so my bad luck is attracting strange issues..
  2. Hi All.. Well I am back to having trouble with my 2nd gen Venture.. I finally had it running nice thanks to everyone here, until now.. As I was riding into a charity ride, it started to stutter like it was running out of gas, I was getting low, but thought I had more, but switched to reserve anyway and it went back to normal.. I flipped thru my odometer and saw I should have at least fifty more miles before reserve so I switched it back to test and all stayed good.. stuttered a few more times but nothing big, figured I may have gotten bad gas.. filled up at a different place all was good for the day, then the week no stuttering until yesterday it acted like it was out of gas again, but it was full, I know, because I just filled it... it would stutter then go, just as if I was out of gas and switched to reserve, it did this all the way home (35 miles highway) but kept up the speed..(70) so I thought my fuel pump was going, so I drained the carbs, made a B-12/Techtron mixture, pulled the fuel line put it in the mixture bottle, turned the key, and it sucked it up just fine.. started it up, it ran ok at idle, I can see it drawing down the mixture as it ran, so it seems all is OK with the fuel system.. left mixture in in to do some cleaning while I went to do some more eliminating, next I went to the plugs, header pipes hot after start, good spark, tightened one wire.. fired it up.. all seemed good...put the fuel line back on the gas tank, turned fuel on, started it up, let it idle a few while I got my helmet, then I hopped on to take it for a test, turned the throttle, it bogged down and died.. would not start again unless I pulled out the choke, and then it would only idle at normal speed, try to turn the throttle, and it just bog's down and dies.. the engine is also sounding really clunky, but not sure if it is just because it is warm and I am using full choke or it is actually a symptom of the problem.. I am unable to start it at all without the choke on full.. the only thing that had been done to the bike work wise, before the symptoms started to appear was I swapped a seat of LA Chopper exhaust to a set of OEM road kings and according to the thread it is a number that doesn't have the cat, and it is not drilled but still fully stock, I did also balance the carbs after that.. I did notice a month or so ago, I was needing to use the choke, more and more to get it to stay running, but after a minuet or so, it would run fine, that is actually why I swapped the muffler since that symptom showed up about a month after I installed them .. I also checked here on the forum for anyone who had this, one was the battery, so I tested it, got good numbers sitting and good numbers running, so that's all working correctly.. next was vacuum caps so I taped them all off, made sure they were sealed.. still wont start without choke.. So, here I sit, lost for a test to try, and I am not sure what is going on with my bike.. So I will bring it here and see if any of you have a clue.. Thanks in advance for any advice or help.. Chuck
  3. Question for you darksiders out there.. I am a person who will not run a MC tire anymore, and havnt on my bikes for many years..I am running a CT on my venture, (which is new to me) and it is getting time to replace the front tire. I see that there are poeple who run the 150/80 and then those who run MT/90 but all of the threads with the pro's/con's and opinons all run MC tires on rear. I want to know what size the Darksiders run and if anyone has tried the MT90. so far my thoughts have been to go with the Avon AM26 Roadrider since it is both a front and rear tire, and it has some meaty tread.. I really like my Commander II I run on my Voyager, but it is not available in a 150/80 size.. so, before I buy,,, I will ask.. Thank you.. Chuck
  4. I believe all pledge is scented, and the lemon seems to be the best at getting the bugs off .. I am not in Canada so I don't know if this place is around you or not. http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/pledge-lemon-furniture-polish-350-g-0530358p.html#.U7hlbmXD-70 other than that maybe a staples or office max , it is weird you can't find it..it is everywhere here in lower 48.
  5. Jurob... In all my many many miles and all 4 different types of tires that fit this bike, the Federal has been the worst to get to bead.. it has, however been my most top rated tire and my favorite, untill just a few months ago when I tried a Nankang..it is very much like the Federal in all aspects except I like the looks of the tread pattern better, but still a bi#ch to mount.. But anyway, that is not the reason for this post.. I have found that taking it to you local small time tire shop, those guys know how to fanagle that tire on the rim.. each time I have tried a new style I wait and think, this is going to be it, they wont get it this time, but, they do, they grease it down with that tire goo and vola..sometimes it takes a while, others are quick, but they always come through..so if you have a tire shop like that around.. give it a try... as for the Tire pressure I think 30 is way to low .. 36 to 38 is much better...
  6. I understand trying to get the most out of each tire, but I will be pulling the MC tire off regardless of the life left in it before I roll out for rolling thunder..I won't make a trip over 500 miles with an MC tire on my bike.. What are you going to run for a CT ?
  7. Cowpuc, So far for CT's I have run a Federal, Nexen and I am about ready to try the Nankang.. at the moment I like the federal the best because it has a stiffer sidewall then the nexen did, but the Nankang seems to have a stiff sidewall too, so I am going to give that a try once I get a chance to pull the tire and have it mounted, which I will do before rolling thunder. I will let you know what I think of it..I actually am thinking of doing a thread and pics with the comparison for people who have questions on this subject.. running a CT is an adjustment, I can go into all the tricks to help with that, so if you do decide to do it, let me know, but as for me.. I will not go back to an MC tire.. @billmac Yes they are pretty new, but my 32k+ miles have been in about 18 months.
  8. riderduke I will take it, if it is not what peder_y2k needs
  9. Cowpuc are you sure you didnt get a used one? I have been using commander II's on all of my bikes because they wear so well, and none of them had a flatter profile, and the stick well in the rain and on cool, even snow and frozen pavement..I ride my voyager XII year round here in New England and have 32k on a Commander II front tire with a car tire in the rear.. Billmac... yup those are the sizes, and you will love the tires.. keep them aired up around 40/42 and they will last a long, long time..
  10. I used this one.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69932&highlight=barnett but the link Midlifeventure posted works just as well.. It is really easy..just take your time and don't rush, the main thing is, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLTS!!! very, bad things happen when you do.. mine happened bacause the PO over tightend them and cracked the studs, so when went to retighten after replacing the clutch plate, the stud just cracked and crumbled, before I was even through fully inserting the bolt in the stud..
  11. I can attest the commander II wears great.. I have not put a CT on the venture since it is a recent acquisition. I do have one ready for it, just waiting for the current tire to wear out. I run the Commander II on my Voyager XII with a CT on the rear and so far have gotten 32k and still going strong, one of the keys to long front tire longevity is tire pressure, I run the commander between 40 and 42lbs once these tires wear out on the venture, I will be running a commander II in the front and a Nankang in the rear.. I have now done close to 100k on a CT, and riding this bike with the MC tire just reminds me why I like CT's so much, exspecially in the rain..
  12. Foam and pans, no covers needed.. I guess Russel Day-long uses some of the foam, because they say if you send in a seat pan without foam, you will be charged extra..
  13. Found out Bob B's seat pans were altered and can't be used, so I am back in the hunt..
  14. Reaney, I live over on the coast in Salisbury,Ma I have a RSV corbin..(which I will be selling) if you want to see if it fits come on down..(no need to buy) just shoot me a PM.. Chuck
  15. Awesome... Just let me know the cost and paypal info, I will get it right out to you. shipping zip is 01952. Thank you very much.. Chuck
  16. I am trying to find a set of seat pans to send in for a Russell daylong rebuild, and I am trying to keep the original seats incase I sell the bike.. I figured I would check on here to see if anyone has some torn up or unusable stock seats that I could send in for the stock pans.. Thank you... Chuck
  17. Really, I don't see them listed on his items for sale... I did see he had a few left over at one point, and he was selling them off at 1/2, but those are long gone..
  18. Not wanting to hijack this thread, but instead of starting the exact same thread of my own, I will say that I too am looking for a set, and once Zollars3265 request has been filled, I will be here awaiting any offers.. Thank you.. Chuck
  19. Hi All I seem to be having a major issue with coils.. After test my new LA Chopper exhaust, decided I needed to tone them down a little so I put back on the old exhaust..at that point it started sounding a little funny, so I checked the header pipes and found a dead cylinder, so I checked carbs and cleaned them, still no luck.. check checked the spark nada.. nothing.. swapped wires to right side good coil and got a good spark, ordered another coil of ebay, swapped them.. all's good, until now, a few days later, going to work on exhaust again.. and again it sounds funny. do my header pipe test.. now the right rear is dead.. checked plugs very weak spark, ran a continuity check on both right and left.. numbers are the same. tested with different plugs, swapped ends from old one, cut off a section to get fresh new contact, and just about everything I could think of, still just have aweak spark.. does any one know what's going on and why this is happing.. do I have yet another bad coil, or is there another place I should be looking at? This has me lost, I have never yet in my motorcycle life had a bad coil, and now I have 2 in 2 weeks.. Thanks for any help you can give Chuck
  20. So you are able to engage the Cruise in 4th gear and this is normal?? I will take a look at the clutch and make sure it is all the way out and do more testing.. thank you for all the replies..
  21. Hi everyone.. I had posted before about a shudder in my engine when going 75/80.. I have taken the advice of syncing the carbs and took it out for a test ride, and I still have the shudder.. The odd thing is, while I was riding to work the other day, I decided to use the cruise so I set it and was zipping down the road and all was good, no shudder at 75..then at one point I looked at the dash and notice the OD light was not on and realized I was still in 4th , so I cancel the cruise shift up to 5th and restart the cruise.. but now it will not set, after totally shutting it off with the switch and turning it back on, it did set at 75, only to shut back off again after about 1.4 mile. I could not keep cruise going in 5th no matter what I tried, 4th gear it works perfect, 5th gear not so much.. anyone have a clue as to what is going on? my other bike with this type of cruise control, I cant set in 4th..only 5th so I am wondering if this is an engine issue and that is where the shudder is coming from. Thank you
  22. it is tight and very hard to turn with or without knob.. No rap:no-no-no:... Just Classic and Southern rock... maybe I can just bolt this on and give myself more to grip and crank up the volume.. http://img1.etsystatic.com/022/0/8185752/il_570xN.488323003_gyc0.jpg
  23. My radio knob on my 2nd gen Venture wont turn, well at least not without some force, took off knob and used needle nose pliers to turn the volume down.. it was working just fine, turn real easy with one finger then just froze. anyone have a clue why, and what needs to be done to fix it.. thank you....
