My first bike was a $300 Yellow T250 suzuki street bike that I twisted the speedo off at over 100mph. I couldn't afford a car and my dad said if I paid the insurance and bills I could get it.(Boy... wish I had that bike back) My second bike was a brand new 1977? blue and white 175 yamaha enduro. I loved that bike. Cost about $100 to insure and was very easy on gas. If it were my son I'd want him to go the enduro path, for obvious reasons:whistling: Enduros are heavier and underpowered. If you set them up with knobbie tires, well lets just say, Don't ride it on a wet road... The stock tires are adequate, for dirt and street, as, your not going to go, much over 60mph? After he gets a couple years under his belt, if he spent more time in the dirt get a real dirt bike. If he liked the street better... If he likes both, I hope you either have a good job, or, the tenacity of my father. buying it myself taught me to respect things. In short a Enduro is a very good beginner bike as you can drop them all...day... long, and, about the only thing you'll have to replace is handelbars and clutch/brake levers.

Thanks ATLM I'll keep that in mind. I need to order bike insurance toady. My 2005 650 Vstar has full coverage for about $100 a year so I'm hoping it's not to bad for the 2007 RSMV.

Another Center Stand Question
CaptainJoe replied to elmicko's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hummmm, very interesting... It got me to thinking, what if one replaced the center stand, with a "good" sissor jack? The sissor jacks made today are a lot more substantial than those chincy things of yesteryear. I may be tinkering with this idea this afternoon. What are the dimensions of a factory centerstand? (mainly the thickness) My 09 RSMV doesn't have a centerstand at all and its impossible to hold the bike up and check the oil by yourself. -
STR... Very good way to remember what to look for! After verifing they have the signs, Call 911(Doctors can usually totally reverse stroke damage if person is medically treated within 3 hours) Have them chew 2 asprin and sip small amount of water . Two Asprin will thin blood and prevent clot from getting bigger. Need to get them dissolved in your stomach ASAP! Asprins have a coating on them, so if you don't chew them, it will take the stomach a while to dissolve to them.

Saddlebag rail adjustment.
CaptainJoe replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I see. Will have to wait till I get next week and tear apart to decide. Yours of course would be the "safest" way. Would hate to apply pressure and bend chrome off. Just got my lighted wing delivered by UPS. Excellent quaility and a perfect color match for my 09 RSMV. Will install tomorrow. -
Saddlebag rail adjustment.
CaptainJoe replied to YamaDuck's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
So in essence your lowering the rear corner... Cool Just ordered mine so will be doing asame thing. Question? Why couldnt you just apply weight to rear corner(with saddle bag off), possibly using a wrapped crow bar or by cutting a Hose and placing on crome so as not to damage it? -
Congratulations! The first year is the toughest. You'll go crazy thinking you should be somewhere doing something. Just relax and slow down. Jump on the bike and put some miles on her. If you like to fish go fishin. Boating, hikeing anything to keep you busy. I retired at 49 after having burnt the candle from both ends for many many years. Now I just run the Park but pretty much work when I want to. I almost went back to work after the first 6 mos. but luckily summer came around and I got real busy real fast. The urge to go back to work went away! LOL...

My first ride on a 2007 Midnight Venture
CaptainJoe replied to CaptainJoe's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for all the tips, guys. I got the ride like a pro v dvd and book set. I did in fact learn something. 1. Never in all my life used the back brake to make slow speed tight turns... But Hey, if it works... I'm game for it. Before I just used the dip method, the friction zone and leaning. Also found out min turn distance on a harley is 18'. Wonder what it is on a RSMV? 2. Although I've done this naturally all my life being a snow skier, never have I heard to turn your Head and look where you want to go in tight slow speed turns. The guy even breaks it down to exactly where you should be looking in a turn. In skiing turning your head and trunk torques your upper bodyso that your leggs and skis follow wether your on snow or in the air. I'm VERY IMPRESSED with this video/book and suggest it for 'everyone' that rides a bike. Now if it would quit snowing, I could go out and practice! Want to be able to drag floorboards doing Uturns. I've even got my wife into this now after watching video. She has a 250 Yamaha v-star. Before the video, she said my 650 v-star was way to big for her, but now???? I might have to buy another RSMV... LOL. -
Squeeze, Oh Yeah, good times!. I love to ski also but this is getting old. I moved here from Pennsylvania 14 years ago and the snow we're getting this year reminds me of there. Normally it snows in Sandyville WV one day, then melts the next. Not so, this year. There has been snow on the ground since beginning of January. So, just how do I get my bike over there to do a road trip thru Germany? My decendants are from Essen on my moms side and from Hermsdorf (between Jena and Gera) on my dads side. Hummmmmmm, road trip to Germany... Now that would be cool!

I just finnished plowing about a mile of road here at the park and and 1/4 mile or so at Briarwood. Use to think it was fun as I put a plow on the front of my 4 wheeler and let er rip, but this is getting old! Buying that 2007 RSMV last week didn't help any. I rode it sunday, put 58 miles on her. come on sunshine!

Need a bit of help
CaptainJoe replied to Jason's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Might want to do a compression test on it before you start tearing things apart. Borrow or buy a compression tester and write down results. -

CaptainJoe replied to Jason's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Really like that tip on applying compressed air to in the spark plug hole while removing cap on radiator. I've got an air blower with a rubber attachment on it that would create a great seal. Would be extreemely careful on amount of pressurre used (maybe 30 lbs?) my compressor goes to 150 psi and don't believe the radiator would appreciate that. -

Monty, Thats why I found this stuff so apealing. It can be used for oring motorcycle chains for lubricant. Performance Features Protects against rust & corrosion, even in salt water Displaces water Stops squeaks Lubricates metal surfaces Leaves a dry, long-lasting, waxlike film Lubricant does not attract dust Does not sling off Sprays into hard-to-reach places Ideal for chains & other heavy-use items -

CaptainJoe replied to Jason's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
White smoke indicates water, or gas... Could be blown head gasket(causes steam). You didn't just wash the bike and get some in the exhaust pipes? Could also be worn valves. Do you smell gas at the tailpipe. -
They are the vent hoses from: 1. the carbs(if the floats stick in down/open position gas will run out hose(s) instead of filling up your trans/crankcase) 2. the trans/crankcase(if you overfill with oil it will push it out hose(s) instead of blowing a gasket out due to over pressurization, when it gets hot) 3. the batteries use to vent here also

CaptainJoe replied to skydoc_17's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Perhaps this would be better as it cleans and doesn't attract dust plus it's a spray can allowing you to get to hard to reach areas. Also not suppose to wipe this stuff off after spraying! I'm going to get a can and add an entry to my periodic maintenance schedule. AMSOIL Metal Protector (MP) and AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector (MPHD) are easy-to-use spray-on synthetic products that protect metal surfaces, displace water and silence squeaks. MP cuts through rust and corrosion to restore free movement of “frozen” hardware parts. MPHD lubricates metal surfaces, leaving a dry waxlike film. Neither forms gum or sludge. AMSOIL MP is the product of choice for drying electrical and ignition systems and protecting electrical equipment from freshwater and saltwater damage. AMSOIL MP is also the product of choice for protecting firearms and other fine componentry. It contains no silicone. AMSOIL MP is compatible with plastic, leather, fabric, fishing line and paint. AMSOIL MPHD is the product of choice for metal surfaces that require a heavy duty lubricant or are exposed to the damaging effects of salt, moisture or chemical corrosion. It is ideal for hinges, wire ropes and springs, nuts and bolts, motorcycle or bicycle chains, and for undercoating wheelwells and other metal surfaces exposed to water, dirt or road salt. Performance Features Protects against rust & corrosion, even in salt water Displaces water Stops squeaks Lubricates metal surfaces Leaves a dry, long-lasting, waxlike film Lubricant does not attract dust Does not sling off Sprays into hard-to-reach places Ideal for chains & other heavy-use items RECOMMENDATIONS Spray product on area to be treated. For best results, do not wipe off. Film carrier will evaporate, leaving MPHD on treated surface. -

Hummmm, I know this doesn't address Skydocs initial question but perhaps an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? If the problem is to little chrome on the main shaft of the shock(which would corrode easily), perhaps, lubricating it religiously would extend its life? Question is, can you physically SEE the shaft to lubricate it? I do know, if any of you out there has a high pressure washer, you should be extreemely careful where you point it. Stay away from the brake pads in the calipers. The pistons that push the pads and pull back into the body of the calipers from a vacume that is created by releasing the brake, do not like having the lubricant being washed off the sides. They will start to corrode, and will rip the bejesus out of the orings, eventually causing failure. Yup you guessed it I use to blast the bejesus out of my bike every week. Now I use a Water hose. My first ride on a 2007 Midnight Venture
CaptainJoe replied to CaptainJoe's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Definately going to change the tires to somethig that will get more mileage. I know what to expect from dunlop 404's as they are on my 650 Vstar. They are ok as far as handeling but wear out very quickly. Won't make any "handeling" mods to the bike for at least a month or so. Good advice. Will order that "ride like a pro V". Hey, I've been riding motorcycles for 36 years but if I can pick up a few tips here and there, I'll be happy. Mods that I am going to make are: "Lighted trunk spoiler" (on ride to calif. last year, bikers killed when they were rearended, car driver didn't see them stopped?) Luggage rack(for "lite" things that just wont fit in the trunk) Drink holders (hot tea drinker) Saddel bag Rails (might help if I do lay it over?) Drivers Backrest (to bad the Mustang seat from my 650 wont fit) Knee wind deflectors/lower fairing (Will these help in the rain also?) Oh, by the way, does anyone know if the cb and audio work simutaneously? -
May-June Road Trip
CaptainJoe replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Would have loved to do the trip but already have one planned form 5/5/2010 to 5/16/2010. Going to ride from Wv to the Florida Keys then head up to the Cape for a shuttle launch on May 14th. You might want to leave a little earlier and catch the view as there are only a few shuttle launches left. The causeway sells out 6 weeks before a launch. So be forewarned.
