So what do you think, did I get my money's worth out of these pads?
CaptainJoe replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
"Anything at or below 1/16"th bonded and I'm changing mine. I also use the non-metalic pads as they don't squeal or "distort" the rotor. Use to be you could get car and bike rotors turned, as from factory they were thick... Nowadays I wouldn't count on it... not only are some to thin to turn but you'll be hard pressed to even find someone to turn them in this throw away world... I only know of one person in this whole area that does it. " he got the squeal thing from me...oops the squeal does come form the area betweem the brake pistons and the back of the pad thats why most car brake pads come with anti squeal lube... As far as the hardness of the pads, the harder the material the pads are made out of the harder it is on your rotors. Napa sells two or three grades of brake pads. The harder ones end up grooving your rotors... I found this out on the front end of a chevy spectrum and i threw those pads in the garbage. Now, I purposely buy the soft as I'd rather buy the pads than buy the pads and have to take the rotor off to be turned...if thats even possible on a bike... Are the HH pads as hard as the hard car pads? Thats a good queestion. Has anyone had to get their rotors turned on their bikes? At how many miles? Or do you have to buy new rotors? -
Freebird, Thanks, for some reason I didn't notice them. I'll have to go down to the garage for a look see. The heaters on the 650 vstar are 20w. Oooops... Sorry flb_78...kinda guess we hijacked your thread....... never did see the giraffe though...

Kenw, I loved to fly the piper cherokee. whats the name of these look alikes? I'll have to check on the rental rates for GA aircraft. That way the maintainence, inspections, hangar fees, insurance...etc... is someone elses headache. It was $65 hr. fuel included. Even if you could pick up a ultralight for 15 grand you have to deal with the other costs... Thanks guys for all your input!

Not to throw a wet towel on all this enthuiasm but when I had my venture carbs torn down for a cleaning I didnt notice anything remotely resembeling Carb heat... Does this new Harley engine or 86 Virago engine have carb heat? My 650 Vstar has 3 carb heaters...I know cause i bronke one off and it cost me $20... Also: depending on what altitude your flying you need to lean out or ritchen the fuel to air mix...

Actually thats good news as they never start beginning pilots out in a multi-engine aircraft... Now if it had been a cessna 150....

and Just how does the butterfly fit in with all of this?

"I have been PIC in 4 other types of ultralights" Were those, front mounted engine ultralights? Yes, I know the challenger is mounted behind the wing. The other ultralights you are talkin about were probably 90 hp front mounted rotax engines. which of the different motor placements did you feel most comfortable with?

I think the posts that got out of control was because some people were telling others what they needed to do. Nobody likes to be lectured or told what to do. In fact, if anyone here is going to do that, it should be Freebird... and Hopefully thru a PM, as nobody likes to be dressed down in public. If we keep our posts informative and just share our experiences, "tell them what you did, not, what they have to do", we could avoid the vast majority of diagressing posts. besides, I've found it's pointless telling someone that you have no control of, what to do, as it's simply not going to happen. If I'm a Republican and your a Democrat, we can have any discussion we want, as long as we go into it knowing that regardless the outcome of the discussion, we will never convert the other to our side. Same goes in regards to religion: If I'm a Catholic your not gonna convince me to become Jewish, or vice versa. We should also become a little more selective in our assessments of products here. It's one thing to say you perfer this type of equiptment because of these characteristics... and quite another to say something is junk. Better to let the facts speak for themselves. I'm glad you said something Freebird. And... Yes I to have gone back and deleted things also...Hey, I'm only Human...

Why didn't you just repaint the unigo trailer you had?
-
I guess I'm just more comfortable with the front mounted engines like the old army ultralite trainers. wizard765, have you ever flown one ? If so how did it handle +10 mph crosswind landings? Swifty, were they front mount engines? If so how did it handle +10 mph crosswind landings?

Ed, a MARINE CORP friend of mine ask what my opinion of a ultralite name of Challenger made in Canada was. To be entirely fair, in GA, ultralights are generally frowned upon. My impression is the the alerion and rudder is inadaqiate and the placement of the 40 hp. rotax engine is also asking for trouble. The placenment of the engie, screws up the CG of the aircraft. Under full power, It also overides the up motion of the yoke which under emergency power on could be detrimental to your health. Since it doesn't have alerions, "flaperions" , a moderate to heavy cross wind cannot be corrected. MaxVE is 100 mph? Sorry but if your practicin stalls and spin adversion that ain't gonna cut it. Engin failures require immediate push overs to avoid flat spins due to placement of engine. Anybody have one of these ? Am I being overly bias?

I never let anyone ride in the same lane as me... A staggered formation is ok but not doubled up in the same lane..

What's that saying Ronald Regan was famous for saying?... Oh yeah : "Trust but verify..." I have a morgan carbtune and tested each tube/slide to a single vacuum source. It's wise to do this before each carb sync. Actually, It's wise to do this regardless of what your using to measure with, especially if it has moving parts... calipers, mics etc... Test it regularly on a Known entity/measurement. Ever a $500 micrometer can be off and need adjustment. I'm not going to argue what is best, but only say if you take the time to verify something, you can be reasonably assured that it will be very close, if not spot on...

I probably had 8-10 hrs in it.... Wasn't trying for a speed record... plus I had to order the 8 orings... so it was apart for a couple weeks. the reason I tore her down was the carb bowls were leaking. i had used a now discountinued carb cleaner that destroyed my orings. My rpms were also hanging when i reved her. when you take the airbox off, twist the throttle and look thru top of carbs... they should return at same rate... mine didnt as they were dirty. if you remove and clean diaphrams it will fix this problem. my gas milage now riding 70mph is about 42mpg 75-80 was it drops to about 38 mpg do yourself a favor, if you have a digital camera, snap a few shots showing cable location etc. also measure and record the ends of throttle cables so its easy to put back together. depending on your milage, you may want to replace fuel filter while you have her apart...

I believe v7goose has an excellent articule on how to adjust the floats on these carbs. I tore all four completely apart. including diaphrams and sprayed with carb cleaner and blowed all orifices out with compressed air. My floats were Way off! If you have ever nuked your system with carb cleaner (Let them sit for a hour with just the cleaner), you may have to replace orings... no biggie they are very cheap... the newer carb cleaners won't hurt the rubber orings... there are orings on the (4)float bowl covers and (4)under the float valve seats tip: two of the carbs won't allow you to remove float valve seats because of steel frame. l fixed problem by center punching and drilling a 3/16 hole thru frame. Make sure you put a piece of metal between carb and frame if you do this. Otherwise its pretty easy to do and you'll have to sync your carbs when done...

I've been told that the newer washers and especially a dryers electronics will not function properly if they are not grounded properly... All the 220 wiring i've put in houses and mobile homes have a (Black and a Red = HOT), (Neutral = White), (unsheathed copper wire = Ground). I believe they went form 3 wire to 4 wire to seperate the neutral from the ground to reduce the shock shazard... Provides aonther ground Its like this: say one of your hot wires comes loose and touches the frame of your dryer ,or, your dryer shorts out... a three wire, unless equipted with a grounding strap to the frame, won't kick the breaker out. The fourth, ground wire is connected directly to the frame and is safer and more importantly, independant, of the neutral.

I-77 exit 146 Ravenswood/Silverton go 4 mile on rt 56, brear right at "Y" Carl Smith is to your left and Ruby Lake Park is next on left. If you come thru Spencer it would be closer... just do a mapquest on Ruby Lake Park in Sandyville WV
-
I like it!
-
If you get to the end of rt 56 at the "Y" , your there... The biggest thing here is My neighbor, Carl Smith and Sons... use to be a big timey oil and gas contractors till they tried to screw the gov. out of the taxes they owed...TWICE! They had over 70 million in equiptment... now ZERO! Lets just say it didn't work out for them and most are in jail... They were bought out by a Texas oil company... Was one of Jackson countys largest employers ...

Yup... thats where I live, Ruby Lake Park 100 yrds. south of the "Y". Its an honest enough mistake though... look how many charlestons there are...

GL1800 vs RSV, initial observations
CaptainJoe replied to Midrsv's topic in Honda Goldwing Tech Talk
I've used both a hot melt glue gun for plastic or staples/screws for wood and some Metal screen door screen to keep mice and wasps out of places. If you own a camper you should stick some behind the exhaust vent on your gas furnace or you will be digging mud daubers out of the metal coils in the furnace... Never thought about it on a bike but it seems reasonable... -
Dragon rider, Freebird, Sounds good. I knew you all were doing it for a good cause. Now I understand why it's merchandise. Thanks Guys, Joe

ken, That is OLd school. Way I use to do it. However I pinched one to many inner tubes and broke down and bought a couple 12" tire spoons. Wish I'd have gotten the 24" spoons, oh well maybe I'll run up to harbor Freight for something to do today...
