am I getting ripped off ?
CaptainJoe replied to Gogosa's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Gogosa, If your mechanically inclined: Buy: two cans carb cleaner(buy new) you don't want to use some of the older carb cleaners as some can actually destroy the orings in your carbs. This is a way to clean carbs and ensure jets are clear without taking carbs off... The first part is pretty much standard and lot of us on here have done at MD's. Take seat, tank and top center air box off. Drain carbs, open 4 drains on bottom of float bowl with a long phillips head screwdriver then close. If you take fuel line off at center rear of carbs and spray full of cleaner, this will effectively place cleaner in all your carbs. let sit 30 min. drain carbs, open drain screws. normally at this point you would close the drain screws and your done but in this case since everythings accessable now (leave open) ---part I would like to add--- Take diaphram(s) and carb slides out. (4) screws round black covers on sides of carbs. Clean and lightly spray with silicone. Make sure you don't loose that tiny oring at bottom of diaphram cover. Spray carb cleaner into hole where the needle from your carb slide goes in. It should be your high speed jet? Spray carb cleaner into small hole inside top of carb. It should be your pilot jet? Spray carb cleaner into hole at the "T" sections of your carbs will be your overflows. hit each with about 60 PSI compressed air(do not exceed) Close your drain screws. Reinstall top center air box, tank and seat. This is probably a 3-4 hour job. Maybe less if your more experienced. -
Think i'll pass on this one...

I bought an 07 midnight with only 482 miles on her in Jan of 2010 I can almost 100% asssure you there is nothing expensive wrong with your bike . These bikes are rock solid but this gas with ethanol and lettin them sit for long periods of time isn't good for any motor. Try to make it to a MD and you'll be good to go. If, by chance, your handy with your hands, mechanically inclined as it were, there are plenty of articules under 2nd gen tech section that you will find interesting. Just do a search on carbs when your in that section... -
SilverT Yup that be a Harley! It's amazing what they are coming up with now!!! Maybe I should get one when traveling thru our cities on the bike...LOL

Anyone catch the EverGo Oxygen commercial? I could be mistaken but it looked like a midnight venture two up? Anyone here? I don't know about the oxygen part, but it did give me an idea about nitrous and those pesky 1st gens... right Yammer?

Freebird, did this prank involve a courtesy ride followed up with a phone call?

I wish everyone in the United States bought up all the oil/gas stock even if they only had one share and just sat on it. No more buying/trading and more importantly Speculating. Then it's price would solely be based on supply and demand. This is not meant to be a political statement. Please don't make it one. I'm just really getting tired of a few people manipulating the price of fuel to fill their pockets. They say for every 1 cent raise in the price of fuel it takes $1 billion out of our economy... Think about it... They have super computers up in new york that can buy /sell many times in a second and make money in the blink of an eye. Rant off...

With a little chlorox you will easily do some of the prettiest Volumeous White Cloud Burnouts imaginable. Heck you coud even get a Pinto to d a burnout with that stuff... Don't ask me how I know...

Just don't do what i fdid and not order a side case gasket. I ordered the 5 springs and 7 friction plates OEM and forgot the gasket... for my 650 Vstar. Hopefully i can get the side cover off without tearing the old gasket. Otherwise it will be laying in pieces for a couple more weeks... Like other members said... whatever you feel good about is what counts. Wish i could have put stiffer springs on the 650 but alas its a manual clutch and was worried about the pull in pressure .

New Idea for Air Filters
CaptainJoe replied to dlhoulton's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The venture is liquid cooled, so this "may" not be a problem but I would definately keep an eye on the spark plugs. Possible early failure... What is one procedure to aid in cooling an engine that is overheating? Enrich the fuel mixture. Enriched fuel mixtures have a cooling effect on an engine. If you take an airplane up to say 10,000 ft. you have to lean the fuel/air mix, as the higher you go, the thinner the air gets... Now, If someone forgets to place this fuel/air mix knob back to its origional position "in" you can over heat an engine on takeoff, which is cured by reducing climb rate and increasing speed, along of course with pushing the fuel/air mix knob in. Now these engines are air cooled, but, I'd be very careful modifying fuel air mixes on any engine... Too much air could cause a lean condition... Rule of thumb is when you mess with the air you gotta mess with the jets... just my 2 cents... I'd make sure I had an extra set plugs along with me... -
No problem i still have a couple thousand miles left on these dunlops... I'm gonna order a dunlop e3 for the front and put a kumho on the rear...

All I gotta say is: They must have a lot of "Bugs" in Florida Thanks bigmo54 i got some questions in to ChrissBoggs hopefully I can get one for $50... Cougar I like the rounded profile of the kumhos, that plus the thick sidewalls make it a better choice. There are at least 5 different tire manuf. that make this size but they are quite different. federal,nexen...

It's over now... Went to pick up a 165/80R - 15 kumho tire at tire discount in jackson OHIO and they said there were none to be had in their warehouses because of the strike in Korea. Looked it up on the internet when I got back and it says the strike is now over... they had been fighting about a month... Passenger car tires are gonna start up first so we should be able to get some fresh ones shortly! :mo money:Although a little more expensive? "The darkside is strong with this one"

Carb/jet cleaning without pulling carbs
CaptainJoe replied to CaptainJoe's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I hear what your saying Marcarl. Carb cleaning followed up with about 60 psi air would be better. Also need to check up on research v7goose did on the "carb cleaner that was bad for rubber orings" ... The seafoam with fuel stabalizer won't hurt. Just doing it to clean the carbs before she is put away for the winter. Although I can't testify to it... in the winter there is low humidity in the air so its normally not a problem with things rusting. I know what your saying though about rust/condensation and corrosion. When flying in the hot humid summer... if someone was to put an aircraft to bed with out topping off the tanks... they was in for either an ass chewing or a no flyinn for a while situation... LOL -
Carb/jet cleaning without pulling carbs
CaptainJoe replied to CaptainJoe's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That sounds fANTASTIC Planecrazy. YOU GOT LUCKY! You got her back to normal without a major tear down. Like I believe skydoc_17 said... it's maybe a 50/50 thing. Make sure you shut off your petcock after every ride. Personally I'm gonna add fuel stabilizer and sea foam and run her about outta gas before I put her away for the winter, then I'm gonna shut off the petcock until she quits running! I don't want any fuel in the carbs over the winter. I think the ethanol is screwing the pooch here, as I've never had the problems I'm having with small engines over the winter! The thing that still won't be entirely clean doing it that way will be the carb diaphram and slide... but... if it's running good don't mess with it. Should also sync your carbs every year... it's great for your MPG'S. Maintanience day is good for doing those if you dont have the equiptment... but i'm sure you know that... The reason I wrote this post was if The bike doesn't start running better, Was trying for a last ditch effort to avoid tearing ones carbs apart as that is a 6-8 hour job... i can do it now blindfolded, but if you don't have to I'm with you! The least time in it the better! LOL -
Ok don't shoot the messenger but: Looking for a way to clean carbs and ensure jets are clear without taking carbs off... Am I missing something? Can anyone add or correct any assumptions I have just made? V7goose , skydoc_17 , freebird, anyone...

One of the biggest problems yuou will face is focus... When I went out west a lot of very beautiful pics were out of focus Most cameras when you push shutter button down half way they focus... problem is you cant take that much time away from what your doing..DRIVInG... that plus they normally display a light green box or the like to indicate subject is in focus " which of course you cant see with any type of glare on the lcd screen"

carb help
CaptainJoe replied to Freeman50's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
aren't pilot jets for air? Regardless... they all have to be clean for them to work right... It got me to thinking: uh oh watch out On a 2nd Gen... 1. Diaphrams can be cleaned without taking carbs off... 2. IF... one took the air box off of carbs there are holes in the top inside of the circular carb body where one could insert a carb cleaner tube. Which jets are affected in doing this? Where I'm heading with this is, if you loosen the carb drain screw(s) and spray carb cleaner in these holes you may not have to take carbs all the way off... as the foreign matter will be ejected through the drain hole. Can't remember which jets the spray came out of -
Excellent !
