  1. Its fixed. I went out to the local dealer, described the problem to the mechanic there and watch as he respectfully but oh so obviously glanced at me with his - OMG, doesn't he know anything - look. The answer: WD-40 Now I am carrying some in the side bag right along side the duc tape. Iowa Guy
  2. I am considering electrifying my liner that I have with my leather jacket. Anyone have experience with this product? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Wiring-Kit-for-Heated-Clothing-Vest-Jacket-garment-WP_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6750QQihZ010QQitemZ200161207116QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Iowa Guy
  3. Where do I locate the wiring harness connector? Iowa Guy
  4. Great.... I think that I've changed my mind about showing this to wife. I may be in the 2nd group. Indeed, when I got the bike at age 50, and even took the safety training before getting licensed, I discovered there is a learning curve. During the first 6 months of riding the bike and I hit the ground 3 times. Two of the times, was because of ignorance of how to brake correctly, and once was because I got on the throttle to aggressive and spun out. Nothing in the last two summers so maybe I'm progressing. I've certainly learned more respect for the dangers involved. I confess, after the last ground bounce and picking up plastic faring parts I had serious thoughts of getting rid of it. I had lotsa helpful advice from the experienced riders from Ventureriders in helping me understand what I was doing wrong and make the necessary changes in my riding and safety changes to the bike. If not for them, I would not still have a bike now. Okay, I have talked myself around to showing her this again. She is smart so she will be able to think this through herself (was that too obvious?). Iowa Guy
  5. Thanks to all for the comments and insights from riders AND their passengers. I will ask my wife to take a look. Iowa Guy
  6. Last night while my black lab was taking my wife & I for a walk, a former boss and current friend of my wife's stopped to give us uninvited advise that anyone over 50 should not be riding a motorcycle. I didn't respond to him cause really, whats the point. I would like to show my wife some of the stats that I have seen here in months past on accidents/fatalities broken down by age &/or experience. I could see that he'd bothered her with his comments. Anybody have that stuff book marked? Tim Lantz Iowa Guy
  7. Anybody pulled a teardrop behind their scooter? I can't imagine something that tall behind me.
  8. Squeeze & Bongobobny, Thanks for the reply. Indeed, left suddenly started working again. Guess that I need to check and clean those two connectors. Thanks. Iowa Guy
  9. Left turn signal doesn't seem to work when I apply the switch. When I apply the 4 way flasher all lights work. I assume that it means that I have a switch problem at the left handlebar control. Iowa Guy
  10. Wow, was that recently. My dealer just quoted me a price of $75.33 plus tax. Maybe I could order mine from your dealer. Iowa Guy
  11. Good looking lift. If I bought one do you think that I could use it to maintain lawn equipment?
  12. Thanks Phil. Now I'm motivated. I'll getter done this week end. BTW. Very nice pics of your 2001. Love that color. Someday, If I want to stretch my legs out more, I'll look for one just like it. Iowa Guy
  13. Mannnnn....if I do it that way I have to take the trunk off so that I can turn it upside down so the powder doesn't run out. whine!, whine!, whine! Iowa Guy
  14. Just noticed over the weekend that there are hairline cracks around where the luggage rack attaches to the trunk radiating out from the screw holes. I plan on using Plastex to fix it. Anyone have hints on whether I should use a backing? Do I need to fill the holes? Can I please benifit from experienced users. Iowa Guy
  15. I got the stebel air horn for Christmas but I have failed to get it hooked up right so far. I don't have any pink or brown wires on my 89, just two black ones that go to each of the original horns on either side mounted near the running lights. One of the wires is hot so I assume is from the battery. Is the other negative and is connected to the horm button? I followed the instructions on the package insert (had to use two pair of glasses at once for the small print) located on the lower right corner but nothing. Is there a posting to help a electrically ignorant 1st gen owner and do-it-yourselfer? Iowa Guy
  16. Got the Nautalis horn for Christmas and tried to follow directions along with the directions in the package. My goal was to replace the wimpy horns that are already on there. I removed both original horns wired things up as best I could and there was nothing. The Venture has two black wires coming to either horn one of which is hot so I assume comes from the battery. The negative is wired to the horn switch as I understand it. I followed the package instructions that are on the lower right corner (had to use two pair of glasses at the same time for the small print) but nothing happened. Help Is there a posting for electrically ignorant first generation do-it-yourselfers? Iowa Guy
  17. I'm experimenting with this one to see what is the best way to block the car behind me. I've had cars pull up beside me or pass me on the right when they are turning right when I have my right signal on and am in the left track. If I have the right signal on and am in the right track, they try to pass me on the left to go straight. I guess I am afraid to split the two tracks and stop in the middle because of the oil in the track and because the car may still try to pass on either side and really clip me. Any thoughts on this one? Iowa Guy
  18. I only remount the middle airwings in really cold weather which is almost here when I don't feel like using the hiway pegs anyway because the middle ones are definately in my way with a 32 in inseam. Iowa Guy
  19. Cool, Is this another item for "Poor Man's Tips or Fixes"? Man, I love it when I can save some $. Iowa Guy
  20. Check the baker airwing site out http://www.bakerbuilt.com/yamaha.htm Iowa Guy
  21. Unfortunately, I did drop my 89 twice very hard. I had some minor fairing damage that I was able to glue back together. The good news is that there was no damage to the fairing where the airwings were attached even though the impact destroyed one of the airwings and bent the brackets. The fairing must be tough there. 22. Thanks to all those who were brave enough to confess to this also. And Tony H, I was riding with some friends, stopped for lunch and had burger and ONE beer, really just ONE cause riding ain't driving. And then the bike kept dying when I'd put it in gear. My buddies left and then waited down the road when I didn't show up. After I eventually caught up with them I would never have confessed if I'd know how much crap I was gonna get. I'm getting wiser, maybe. Tim Iowa Guy
  23. Rode my 89 1255 miles round trip from SE Iowa to Little Rock AR to a conference there. This is the first trip I've done like this and I have a lot more confidence in the bike and myself now. Anyway, after having lunch and a brief snooze on the grass (anybody else do that when they ride?) I turned the key, hit the ignition and NOTHING! Rats! Must be that electrical short and the battery went dead while I was sleeping. I went into the restaurant & the owner offered to give me a jump. We hooked up the cables and again NOTHING. Now what could it be? As I asked him to check his connections I happened to look at the red toggle switch that I never use on the left handle bar. YUP! The kill switch was off. So I said to the good samaritan, without mentioning my serreptitious red button correction, "Maybe it is connected right now" and hit the ignition with the now clearly unnecessary jumper cables still attached. And it started. Amazing. I thanked the good fellow and quickly drove away after reassembling the cover and tank bag and dressing with gratitude that I hadn't spent $100 and called a local garage. Duh. BTW, I love the twisties in AR.
  24. I saw these floorboards on Ebay buy can't identify them. Are they front or back? How would they attach? They don't look like any Venture floorboards I've seen before. Item number: 130031169132 Iowa Guy
  25. Wow, looks great. And you have the same cup holder as my 89. Good ole Wally World. Tim
