Rear 89 Shock
Iowa Guy replied to Iowa Guy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I was told by my local mechanic not to pressurize the front shocks because they had progressive replacements and it makes them too stiff. I am wondering like you if the rear had a progressive in it too would it be enough for two-up and would I even need the class system. Iowa Guy:confused24: -
Bad news from the local mechanic. He said that the rear shock is gone and it is dangerous to ride. Good man, I think, cause he said it would be expensive if I bought it direct from Yamaha and suggested somewhere like ebay. So, I am looking for comments, advice and probably somewhere to buy a rear shock. Is it a bad idea to buy a used shock? My 89 only has 33K miles. Maybe its not the miles but the age. Good Idea. I think that I will do the same. I am about ready to paint my HF trailer and then the sears box. How is it all put together? Are the stakes and floor one piece that detach all together or seperate? Iowa Guy

I've got the 89 blue two tone RSV and I want to paint the Sears x-cargo box to match or close. Anyone have luck matching the Krylon colors to that year of bike? The colors offered on their website look as if the two most similiar might be: Blue Hyacinth 2333 (darker blue) Satin Twilight 2440 (lighter blue) I'm also looking for the pinstriping between the two colors. Love those Stebels I rode out to see my 80 year old dad last week. He was out in his orchard on a ladder trimming limbs and not wearing his hearing aids. Horn was pointed away from him so I figured it was safe to touch the horn button. I won't do that again. He startled and I thought he was going to jump off the ladder. Iowa Guy

The weather is indeed turning and everyone is getting eager to ride. Tuesday evening I took off for a 90 min ride north and what began in stimulating 60 degrees dropped to 35 before I stopped for the night. The temp kept dropping during the night so in the morning when I got up I was riding the wet streets that had frozen overnight. be careful out there.

Is this true of all cassetes, that there is a aux input inside. I have an 89 that I am going to use my MP3 player with but thought that I needed to buy the cassette adapter. HMM... maybe not? Iowa Guy

Interesting Thread. It got me to wondering so I have been reading up on the laws in various states. Then I went to the local sheriff and put in my application for a permit. Iowa is a May Issue state at the discretion of the individual sheriffs. I see that two counties nearby usually issue but rarely in Jefferson Co where I live. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and frequently work with abuse victims. More than occasionally I receive threats from family members as I advocate change; the last one just last week. "I am going to come in and take care of you" He didn't show but it certainly causes a person to think. Now I have had a ball bat in my office but its reach is limited. I'd be more than willing to take the safety course and stay qualified. I haven't had serious trouble for a long time. Years ago, I had a knife at my throat and a gun aimed in my direction by some outlaw Grim Reapers. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Can't say that it was a very pleasant experience. It could have turned out very different. Hmmm....

After submitting character references, an opinion from another Dean of a major university in Texas and an opinion from our attorney along with our stated willingness to sue the college, our son was cleared of everything. He didn't get an apology but hey. Iowa Guy

I saw a thread that I cannot find now. It was a handy step by step instruction with pictures for a Markland hitch install for a 1st gen. There are some details in the install that I just can't quite recall. Iowa Guy

Bob, Is that the Sears x-cargo model? Can't tell by the picture. Iowa Guy

$139.99 vs $1000 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=42708 Are Piggybackers really that much? http://piggybacker.stehltow.com/

I bought a harbor freight trailer kit. I will be painting it black as the standard red paint just doesn't go with my 2 tone blue 89 VR. I am curious as to what others have put on top of the trailer. I have looked at the Sears x-cargo 189.99 http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02872020000P?vName=Automotive&cName=Automotive+Accessories&sName=Car+Top+%26+Hitch+Carriers The dimensions look like it would be alright. I checked into painting it to match the bike but wow. The body man said it would be $200 or more. That sort of negates the savings of the HF kit. He also incouraged me to get something in fiberglass. So, What have others put on top of their HF kits? Tim Lantz

The worst present was one that I neither gave or received. We were all sitting around the tree on christmas morning after polishing off a huge breadfast. All the kids were there, big and small along with Grampa and Gramma. My wife begins to open a small box she says from me. I didn't remember wrapping up a small box that year but hey, my memory has never been very good. She pealed the paper back, peaked inside, looked at me then turned a bright shade of red and said she'd look at it later. Everyone wanted to know what it was (including me by the way) but she wouldn't give it up, keeping the package firmly wedged in the crack of the sofa. Later she wanted to know what I might have been thinking to give her edible panties wrapped under the tree. It seems some friends of ours had made the purchase and placed them their as a joke. Paybacks can be a *^%#*. This year they don't know it yet but their front yard is going to be the city's official christmas tree reclamation collection point. Could be good for a few hundred trees. Merry Christmas to all:snow2:

Eat garlic. I lived in South America for 2 years traveling and in poor neighborhoods as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I could not have possibly inspected for or eliminated all the insects that were everywhere. Solution: I made garlic a regular part of my diet. Insects in any bed I slept in not only would not bite me but actually made their best attempt to get out of the bed. Garlic works (and I like the taste) Iowa Guy

And I'd just like to paint my old marked up white helmet black to match the wife's rarely used one cause only the white ones were on sale in my size and I wear mine all the time so it gets marked up on the white which probably wouldn't show as much if it was white like my wife's who hardly ever uses hers cause she doesn't go with me on the bike for one reason or other that I don't care about anymore cause I'm gettin used to riding all by myself and can take corners as fast as I want. And I don't have issues! (too fast, she says and do you have to lean when you go around corners she says?) Iowa Guy

My wife and I sent our middle son to Dana College this fall. He went on academic and athletic scholarships. He runs cross country and is majoring in chemistry. Highschool GPA was 3.8+ and he has had a strong history of community service, no trouble ever etc... (My bragging list is long). Two weeks ago he got his first major paper back from his composition prof with a big zero on the front. When he asked she said that he had plagiarized & he found that his roommate also received a zero. He didn't understand how since they'd only discussed topics but no specifics for this paper. His roommate denied copying the paper. Now this is serious because it could jeopardize his scholarships, whether he could run for the cross country team and even risks expulsion from the class or even school itself. When he had a meeting with the prof she laughed at his questions insisting that he very well knew what was going on because the two papers were word for word identical. His roommate again denied he had copied the paper. He said he couldn't show my son his paper because he'd deleted it from his own computor knowing that he'd get the finished one back from the prof. Only later when my son found the plagiarized paper on roommates computor did roommate confess that he had taken my son's paper from his desk and copied it. Roommate said he would tell the prof he'd plagiarized which he did. The prof offered them a chance to do the papers over again and she would give each of them half credit. This was unfair enough but here is where it get really weird. Prof withdrew her offer when she was reminded college protocol stated that she had to take it to the Dean and then to an academic counsel made up of other profs. Great! With a confession from the roommate, my son should be off the hook, get the credit he deserved for the paper and all is well with the world. But no! The academic counsel ruling that both boys will receive zeroes. The roommate because he plagiarized and my son because he did not adequately protect his work allowing his roommate the opportunity to plagiarize. With this "blame the victom" logic, a casualty of sexual assault would be told she should have kept her legs together and then sent to prison along with the rapist. We are trying not to be "helicopter parents" or hovering overhead but instead just being supportive. It is hard. I am hoping he will appeal but know that he might risk even more severe consequences if he does. It is a small thing in the big scope of the world. He is smart and healthy and will certainly make it one way or the other. Darn kid. I guess its time he finds out about life outside mom & dad's house. Sometimes great and sometimes rough. Iowa Guy Tim Lantz PS He has applied for a new roommate.
