I have an 05 GL1800 and a 91 Venture. I just can't part with my Venture. We mostly use the GL for two-up long distance trips, the wife has more room on it. I ride the Venture by myself alot. The GL1800 is an awesome touring machine...more power than you will ever need, great handling loaded, and great brakes. I can do more miles in a day on the GL, its a little less work than the Venture due to the lower center of gravity and easier handling.

ZUMO 550 So far, every time I've tried to use my common sense over the advice of Heather (that's what I named her), I've been wrong and she's been right.

Where have all the 1st gens gone?
91nwl replied to 91nwl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When did it turn friendly? -
Have you noticed that there are almost no nice 1st gens on E-bay lately? There used to always be a couple. Maybe Yamaha needs to make a few more.

I've had good luck with J&M. I have two of their top-of-the-line headsets that are 10 years old and work well. I have ordered a few replacement parts from them on the phone and got what I needed.

I want to add some auxiliary lighting to my 91 VR. Has anybody tried these (link below) from Electrical Connection? I don't necessarily want "fog lights", but I want more light in the foreground and side area, so I want something like 30 degrees as opposed to high beams. Also, should I go with 35W or 55W? Could the 55W overload my elect system? I don't run the aux lighting all the time, just when needed at night. I have 55W aux lights on my Goldwing and they really work well. http://www.electricalconnection.com/driving-lights/dl_performance.htm

You've got a nice route there. Couple of suggestions; Take 128 from Moab up to Hwy 70 instead of 191. 128 is a little two-lane paved road that follows the Colorado river through some very nice scenery. Instead of taking 70 all the way to the 15, turn south on 89 and go to Panguitch, then take 143 to Cedar Breaks Nat'l. monument, the monument is nice, but the road is even better. Then take 14 over to 15, or take 14 back to 89 and see Zion from the opposite direction on the way back to St. George.

I (still) have the stator wire oil leak. I thought I had it fixed with silicone, but it started leaking again after awhile. Anyway, if I just want to get new grommets to seal it, what part do I have to buy, the stator or the pickup?

Another perspective is that a full boat touring motorcycle with all the doodads that Ventures and Goldwings have is a heck of a thing to design and build. The "newest" 1st gens are now 15 years old. My 91 is 17 years old. It has been incredibly reliable. It has never actually failed on a ride and I would trust it to go anywhere right now. It has a couple of little annoyances that I may fix this winter...like the stator oil leak and the bypass tube o-ring coolant leak that only occurs on cold mornings. But, my mechanic is against fixing those things. He thinks they are not worth it and he is going to argue with me when I bring it up. (I do all the little stuff myself and try to do some of the bigger stuff, but when I'm not comfortable, I go to Gary at Huntington Beach Yamaha. He'[s the best.) Also, these boards are great for getting adevice on how to fix things when they are not right, so we get a disproportionate view of reliability reading the posts. Someone is always complaining about something, but for every one of those, there are a thousand guys out riding.

decel wobble
91nwl replied to Indyventure's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Most of the time the wobble is around 40 mph on decel. Most of the time it is tire related. It usually shows up when the tires are getting close to worn out, but sometimes it happens on new tires. It happens on all makes of bikes. People spend a fortune trying to fix it. You should see the attention this gets on the Goldwing boards. The most effective countermeasure is to keep both hands on the bars. If you think it is a safety problem when you have both hands on the bars, you probably have a significant tire issue...seperating tire, unbalanced tire, cupped tire, low pressure, etc. But most of the time it is barely perceptable if you keep both hands on the bars, so the wobble is not a safety issue in and of itself. If it wobbled at 100 mph, now that would be a problem. -
Front fork bottoming out....help!
91nwl replied to ceastlick's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Before installing the progressive springs, I ran my class on high and avoided being on the brakes when I hit a bump. -
Heavy-duty (diesel) motor oils like Chevron Delo and Shell Rotella have an additive package that's good for motorcycles and they don't have any friction modifiers (good thing).

I would like some advice from someone who has cut down his windshield and was happy with the result. I would like to know; * What kind of saw did you use? I assume a hand held electric jig saw. * What type of blade is best? * How did you mark the line? Tape? * Did you have to do finish work on the new edge and what did you use? My wind screen is a lot higher now that I have new Progressive fork springs, so I need to take about 4 inches off. Thanks

It is most likely leaking at the stator wires. They pass thru the stator cover in a rubber grommet which shrinks over time and causes oil to drip. I tried to fix mine with some silicone a short while ago and reported success, but it has since started dripping again. Short of replacing the stator and getting new grommets with it, the best strategy is to only fill the oil to the half-way spot in the site glass and park the bike on the center stand. That's what I'm doing now while I decide whether I want to pop for the expensive fix.

Oil change question

The recommended 20W-40 is Yamalube, available at Yamaha dealers. It is semi-synthetic. I use it. -

Someone on this site bought one of these and owes us a report on how it works. This looks like the slick deal. I'm thinkin about getting one but am waiting for the report. BTW 1st gens don't have AUX...but you know that. http://www.edsets.com/edsets_adapters -
Small Intermittent Coolant Leak

Thanks So, are you talking about a water pump rebuild? -
Small Intermittent Coolant Leak
91nwl replied to 91nwl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's right. The typical scenario is hot day followed by cool night. The only time it is visible is in the morning. I've read here in the past that it may be that it leaks when hot, but evaporates on the pipe. Then, when the pipe cools down, it makes a little puddle. -
Small Intermittent Coolant Leak

So, doesn't anyone know if that little hole in the bottom of the water pump is supposed to leak or not? Is it a bypass, like on a car water pump? -
91 Venture Royale, 43,000 miles. When I ride all day in hot weather, the next morning I have a little bit of coolant on my right exhaust just below the water pump. It burns off when I start up and the loss is negligable. Still It bugs me. I thought it was the o-rings in the plastic transfer pipe between the water pump and the thermostat housing. But, today I got down and looked and there is a little hole in the bottom of the water pump and there is a stain, as though coolant has leaked out the hole from time to time. This is the only place that looks like anything has leaked in the past. Anyone have a similar experience? Do I need to fix it?
