I'm always drooling over 2nd gens on E-bay. I don't live too far away from you neanderthall. That is a beautiful bike. I'm seriously tempted.

We are especially fortunate to live in a time and place where we have great bikes and great roads to ride them on. I can't get enough of riding in North America. You won't hear me complaining about anything on either my 91 Venture or my 05 Wing. They both bring me incredible enjoyment. Ride on.

I like what Mark Twain said about politicians... "Suppose you are a member of Congress, and suppose you are an idiot.......but, I repeat myself."

The GL1800 does not need an air filter change until about 30,000 miles. But it is a bear to do. I've looked at the process and am gonna take mine to the dealer.

I think you could get carb boots ata dealer. I can still get most parts for my 91.

Do em both....every chance you get You will like them. Stop in Cooke City and Red Lodge, both interesting. Red Lodge has some good places to eat. Cody has good motels...there's a nice Best Western there and go to the Buffalo Bill Museum. You can walk from the motel. You'll see lots of bikes in the area.

I have the Shoei Platinum and really like it. I'm on my second one. It is light, which is important to me because after a few days on a long ride, my neck gets a little pain. Nice big ear cups inside so you can install speakers and still be very comfortable. The new model has removable pads so you can clean them. My only complaint before was that the pads were not removable.

Dunlop E3 question
91nwl replied to Dexx's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Looks like Chapparal has the K-491 E-II front and rear. These are the best tires I have ever used on the Venture. http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparral/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=582&gift=False&0=assets%2Fhtml%2Fd%5Fstreet%2Easp%2CnavId%3Dd%5Fstreet%2A0%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D%2CStreet&1=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D456%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D0%2CStreet%20Tires%2C%20Wheels&2=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D160%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D1%2CDunlop%20Street%20Tires&mscssid=006CB7E2017084C62B128776EDE7E179 -
I just bought a Tourmaster Transition jacket. The quality and features are top notch. I haven't used it in any real cold weather yet, but rode at 46 degrees without the liner in and it was very comfortable. The vent system works great. I wore it last Sunday in 82 deg temps and as long I was moving it was cool and I could feel the vent air. When I stopped in traffic, it got a little warm. I think this jacket willk work from the low 30's to the mid 80'2. It is comfortable, has a lot of pockets and vents and is just a very well thought out design. I recommend it. I got mine from Jake Wilson online.

I have "old" respect for the 1st gen. Mine was sitting outside the Yamaha shop a few months ago in for a fork rebuild and a customer who had never seen one thought it was some new model.

Keeping the oil level below the half way mark on the sight glass and storing the bike on the centerstand also helps with the leaking around the stator wires, which you probably have. I maintain mine at about the 1/4 mark, 1/2 maximum and I check it often. Mine does not burn any and does not soil the airbox, just leaks a little onto the exhaust collector and ground.

I take at least 3 per year. A 5-7 dayer in both spring and fall and a 2-3 weeker in the summer. I have a map of North America with must-do's marked in yellow high-lighter and have-done's marked in red. I have the same thing with California roads and they're almost all red now, so I have to expand the radius. Last summer was Canadian Rockies. This summer is Black Hills. For a biggy, I want to fly to New Zealand, rent a bike and ride around both islands. I'm also planning an Alaska trip.

Nowhere.

If I was gonna shoot a lot I would get a good .357 mag revolver and re-load 38's for plinking.

Sat on one at the bike show in Long Beach today. Bike looks and feels good, but the plastic is way too thin. The hinge on the trunk is really mickey-mouse and will break the plastic in no time, I predict. Also, passenger space seems cramped.

Can the 2nd Gen be fitted with a centerstand? Is it a Yamaha item, or aftermarket? Anyone have one? I assumed they did not have one, but there is a 2nd gen on e-bay now that claims to have one. Thanks

I was in Calgary in August at a Honda/Yamaha dealer and sat on a Venture just like that one.

Headlight Replacemnt for 1st Gen?
91nwl replied to sefner's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I recently installed a Sylvania Silver Star. Very big improvement over my stock bulb. It was about $17 at Autozone. There's a thread in here with the part number. -
36 degrees and snowing around July 4th on Independence Pass in Colorado two years ago. Two days before, I rode in 113 degrees in Mesquite, Az. 36 is better.

Big Bike Parts sells (sold) a lighted replacement for the upper reflector. I picked up one a year ago on sale from their website for about $60, half the original price. Mine was cracked. Anyway, it installed easy and looks like the original. I removed the emblems from my stock reflector and glued them on the new unit.

I prefer frame-mounted fairings for touring. And real motorcycles have pegs.

Using the Volt Meter
91nwl replied to 91nwl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks. Good info. Pretty much what I thought, but good point about "current state of charge" versus "battery condition" with the motor off. -
The explanation of the volt meter function in the owners manual is pretty wimpy. It says if the needle drops into the yellow zone while riding, see your dealer. So, electrical experts; Can the meter show a weak or dying battery? Would that be indicated by a low reading while the bike is not running? If so, I assume less than 10 volts or so would be an indication of a weak battery? And, what if the reading is weak while riding? Is that a bad battery, or a bad stator?

Sorry but I don't think visiting Needles qualifies you to claim California on your map. I protest.

Oil leak from stator wires?
91nwl replied to BJB's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I tried that. Cleaned everything really well with lacquer thinner, let it dry, waited a week, applied a good silicone sealant, buttoned it back up. It worked for a while, but eventually the leak came back. I think my problem is that I could not get sealant on the oil source side, I could only get it on the oil exit side of the wires. Anyway, the mechanic at my local dealer had a 1st gen Venture for 16 years and says he can fix it so it will never leak again. This guy has never failed me yet. I may take it in soon and see if he can do it. It's probably gonna cost me a couple hundred bucks in labor. It really isn't a big problem and his advice is to let it leak, but I'm a freak for leaks.
