    1991

Nice trip. Nice bike. My 91 Blue-Black has been to all those places. We even ate on that same patio in Ouray, Co.
  2. Here's what I ended up with. I made a bracket out a piece of aluminum and attached the new fuse box and a relay to it. It sits on velcro on top of the air intake and is also attached via the screw that holds the OEM fuse box. I rewired everything nice. Driving lights, heated grips and charger leads are on the new fuse box. I have two relays, one for the aux fuse box and another for the driving light switch. The driving light switch relay is in the fairing under the stereo. Not quite as neat as I had hoped, but everything works well. The Easter Beaver PC-8 fuse box is a nice piece. I lie that it does not require end fittings on the wires and that it has both switched and unswitched fuses. (I put the battery charger lead on an unswitched fuse.)
  3. Thanks. I'll take em when you get to it. I'm not in a hurry.
  4. The lights are 8-10 amps, the hotgrips are about 5-6 and the charger doesn't count. It is all working now. I just want to clean up the wiring and make it all look pretty. Here's another slick-looking solution; http://www.fuzeblocks.com/
  5. Does anyone have a good suggestion (pictures?) on where to mount an auxiliary fuse box? I'm going to clean up my wiring. I have heated grips, driving lights and a Deltran battery charger. I'm thinking of mounting this one on top of my existing stock fuse box. It is almost the same size and thin. I'll only use four of the eight fuse positions though (one for light switch). http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Products/Fuseboxes/PC-8/pc-8.html
  6. So I bought some of those cheap driving lights at WalMart...Blazers I think. They're 50 watt...nice bright lights. I ordered a switch and relay from Electrical Connection and wired it up. I did a good job of wiring and figured I would replace the lights at some point with something better and keep the wiring, switch and relay. So the issue is that if the bike is idling and I switch the lights on, they don't always come on. But if I start riding, they will come on, then sometimes go out and come back on intermittently. Is it the lights, the switch, or the relay? Or is it the stator? Or, is it possible I have a loose connection or ground? Has anyone experienced anything like this on a 1st Gen Venture?
  7. I live in Huntington Beach, CA. We are starting our best riding season. Nice and cool, but the days are shorter. Just rode to Palm Springs for lunch last Friday. 250 miles roudtrip. 75 degrees.
  8. Great idea. That would be very clean looking.
  9. If I get en extension lasting more than four hours, my mechanic is the last person I'm gonna call.
  10. Does anyone make a side-stand extender for the 1st Gens? With my progressive springs, it would be nice to have a little more length. If not, I can just weld some metal on the bottom.
  11. If you're going to use a car oil, Mobil 1 15W-50 is the one you want. It is made for older cars with flat-tappet cams and has almost as much anti-wear additive as Mobil 1 Racing 4T (formerly MXT-4) motorcycle oil. The 10W-30's are all energy conserving, so no go. Most 10W-40's are not energy conserving but do not have much anti-wear. You want the anti-wear additives because your oil lubes the transmission gears.
  12. You can use 20W-40, 10W-40 or 20W-50. Just stay away from 10W-30 as it is all energy conserving. Yamalube is good.
  13. 550 from Durango to Ouray is a must. There is a really nice Best Western in Ouray. Take 62 and 145 over to Telluride and spend a little time. 141 up to Orchard Mesa. 50, 92, 133, 82 to Aspen. Spend time. 82 over Independence Pass and 24 up to Leadville. 91, 70 and 40 to Granby. 34 to Estes Park. 7, 72, 119, 70 to Denver. This is a really great route and there will be some left over for your next trip.
  14. Heading south on PCH one evening on my 91, from a light with noone in front of me, I decided to go through the gears and shift at 6,000 RPM just for fun. Approaching 6,000 in 4th, I meet a guy on a V-twin and he waves. I instinctively drop my left hand off the bars and extend my arm to wave, at which time my arm almost comes off. I also noticed his eyes are kinda big as he passed in a flash looking my way. Looked down and I was doing 105 mph. Gotta pay better attention. Shifted into 5th and let her coast down a little.
  15. I'd do that one.
  16. I love the looks of the 2nd gens but the reasons I have not moved from my 1st gen so far are; I prefer pegs over floorboards I prefer the frame-mounted fairing No center stand Things that irritate me about my 1st gen; I can't stop the oil leak from the stator wires The brakes could be more powerful It wallows a bit in high-speed corners The forks were weak until I switched to progressive springs When I decided to buy a newer bike, I bought a GL1800 because I realized it has everything I like about the 1st gen and more of it in spades; Power (up the ying-yang) Reliability Brakes (awesome) Comfort for two Luggage Weather protection Pegs Center stand After-market goodies (up the ying-yang) I kept both bikes and ride them both. I shop for a second gen to replace my 1st gen all the time, but don't know if I'll ever be able to actually part with my '91. But, the GL1800's are really expensive, even used. Awesome bike though.
  17. O don't know if the Beartooth is "scary" or it just takes your breath away. It kind of depends on the weather. But either way it is definately a rush.
  18. Thanks. That's exactly what I needed.
  19. I've been using the standard Yumicron battery that comes with a sensor. If I switch to the maintenance free Yumicron, will I have any issue with the sensor?
  20. Does the RSV have a mute button? If so, make sure it is off.
  21. I ride a Goldwing and a Venture and I am a snob. I wave at lots of bikes, but I'm still a snob. Why is it that we like bikes that are going the opposite direction than us, but not those guys that are going the same way we are.
