We use them all the time fishing for striped bass here in Va. we use mostly live bait but you can use plastic swim baits also. What you do is put your bait on and then find out how deep you want to run your bait for example if you want to run it 20 feet reel off 20 ft. of line and clip your line (the reel side) to the red release and the bait side of the line thru the snap swivel on the back of the board and then just let the line out the length you want the board will act like a ski and will move to the outside of the boat we usally troll them about 1/2 mph with electric trolling motor and we run 3 on each side of the boat.
