This has been discussed in a bunch of threads. There are many companies out there. Garmin, Lowrance, Magellen, and Tom Tom seem to be the most prevalent. I have an IWay 500C from Lowrance, loads of great features, especially the waterproof part. It is heavy though. Recently got a Garmin Nuvi 765, very light, not quite as versatile as the IWay and not waterproof. I like them both but will be wiring the bike for the Nuvi once I get the RAM mount in. The important part, IMHO, is to do some research as to what is available, then decide what is important to you. There are some sites online that do reviews, I believe CNet has some on GPS. There have been several threads on the forum where folks have gone into detail on the GPS units they own or have used. A search should yield a wealth of info for you.

My wife uses a HJC Symax II and the J&M CB on her Kaw 1500. We did a nice long ride today and she hasn't noticed any garbling at speed.

The others pretty much answered the question, and pointed out tutorials. I would recommend a training site, http://www.lvsonline.com. They have a lot of different courses, that cover web, computer, and various other interest areas. Most of the courses are $25 for the six weeks and do a very decent job of getting you started. I took their SQL course some time ago and it gave me enough of a leg up to do a decent job.

The only major problem I see is that the maps show your bikes are going in reverse:> Isn't that gonna take a little longer since you don't have a wing? Looks like a great adventure. Enjoy

Welcome home. I feel your pain, I was able to slip through the cracks when I came back, Riley had a policy that you weren't allowed to ride for three months, but since I didn't redeploy with a unit I scooted by. Can't help you with pieces or advice since I ride a 2d Gen and have the mechanical apptitude of a squirrel with ADD, but wish you many happy miles as you transition back to life on this side of the pond.

Back when I worked at a gas station fixing flats we had a "cord" that we put around the middle of the tire. It was inflatable and once we cinched it down and aired it up it would force the tire to seat. You could do the same with a ratchet strap.

We picked up a 765 a little over a week ago. It is a pretty good GPS. I like some things that the Lowrance IWay 500C did better, such as being able to customize the display, but it has some features that the IWay didn't have.

Clay, someone has surely already told you that when he has lost his pin, Mr. Grenade is not your friend. More importantly, when it is close to entering your body, Mr. Tap Water is definately not your friend. And if Mr. Tap Water should get in, Cipro is your best friend. Immodium won't even slow it down. But on the bright side, chai never hurt me, even if it was given to me in the only glass the Iraqi platoon had. Stay safe, just remember that now that you are boots on ground, the two important dates, R&R and RIP/TOA.

He is in Kuwait. All the folks heading to Iraq spend a little bit of time there getting acclimated, etc. Even in Iraq you don't have the magazine in while on a FOB, but you must have a least one magazine on you. Nope they have plenty of ammo, and since Clay is a SAW gunner and carries a pistol he will be able to tell you in great detail how heavy that stuff is. They may have changed a bit, but when we went out it was 210 rounds of 5.56 and 75 rounds of 9 on your person. After being over traveling on aircraft here feels strange. There they check to make sure you have a weapon and ammo before boarding, here they go ape**** over a bottle of water.

Our IT shop uses Kaspersky. I liked what I saw and use it for my home machine now.

I use these folks for my website http://www.nomonthlyfees.com/. Of course asking what is the best website hosting service is like asking which Venture model is best. You really need to figure out what you want to do, what your needs will be and then find the one that will work best for you.

The last son I have in Iraq will be heading back in a week or so. But Ventureriders has another member of the family in theater now. Clayton with his M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) and M9 pistol. Looks like they just go their body armor.

Thank you for thinking of us. We really appreciated the way you guys supported us. It doesn't seem like it has been that long on the one hand. But since we came back, two of my boys went over, both actually spent time on the same FOB I was on. One came back in November, and the other should be back in Hawaii in a week or so. We still plan on getting out that way when we have a decent amount of time off. Y'all take care, Cliff

I have the Flex 2 jacket and pants. Rode from Georgia to Texas and back in November. Coming back it was really windy and cold, believe it was maybe mid 30s. Only cold spot I had was my hands and that was because the gloves I bought in Alaska had a blowout between a couple of the fingers.

Clay, take care. If you or Lauri need anything don't hesitate to holler. Don't know if you are aware, but there are ways to call back to a local base from Iraq and get them to patch you into a local line (Ft McPherson). We probably have the number somewhere so if you don't have it, send us an email and we will get it to you. If you go through Ali Al Saleem in Kuwait, they have a C-zone where you can buy internet time. If you are on a FOB, there is the MWR places with free internet, although you may have to wait in line and there are blackout times. On some FOBs and even smaller bases you can get civilian internet.

Ditto on what 1rooster said. If your loss is service connected you are eligible to have that treated by VA. I have a pretty high tech BTE model that was issued by the Army before I got out, go back to the VA in Feb to see about getting one for the other ear. And since it is service connected, I am only out the gas and time.

My GPS has an MP3 player, so I plug it in, set the controller to AUX and I can get the tunes, directions, and CB.

I have had the Nelson Rigg model since 2005. I used to travel quite extensively for work, so I was using it on a daily basis. It is still OK, but getting a bit weather worn. Never leaked, does an excellent job.
-
Hang in there, Clay. There will be a lot of sucky boring conditions before you get to your AO. It just becomes the nature of the beast. With all the changes over in Iraq right now, that could be holding you guys up a bit. But your clock is already ticking, so grin and bear it. It won't be too long till you will be coming back for R&R and it is all downhill after that.

I am glad you posted how to do it, Gene. I was going nuts trying to get it to work. I have written a lot of html, but this was kicking my butt.

Don't have a 1st Gen, but I have used a couple of different styles of grip heaters. Aerostitch sells a set for less than $30 that has two pads that wrap under your grips. The problem I had with them was they use a big resistor to even the heat out and the wires running to it are very thin, so of course that is where mine broke. I bought a couple more sets from casporttouring.com. They are made by Symtec and get away from using the resistor by having the two pads with different resistance. I finished mounting a set on my wife's bike just before Christmas and it seems to work OK, haven't really had an opportunity to check them out on cold days.

I use a cover from Nelson-Riggs. Spent a lot of time on the road doing business trips and it has held up well for about three years so far.

which GPS is the best now???
Gray Ghost replied to Ga Dawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mainiac, I have a 500C, mine is on a Ram mount to the handlebars and I have had very little trouble with it. I did have problems when I stuck it up on the car dash next to the windshield, found out that if I ran the defroster on cold it would alleviate the problem. Seem to be very prone to heat.
