Windshield & handlebar question
OB-1 replied to raceman62race's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
We have a Clearview windshield with a vent. Very nice product and we recommend them highly. We have their largest windshield and it really cuts down on the wind buffetting that my wife experiences. -
Installing Hitch - Brake Controller Recommendations?
OB-1 replied to Cerviperus's topic in General Tech Talk
You might want to rethink the mounting of the controller. Electric brake controllers need to sense decelleration. This normally requires a solid mount to the tow vehicle. A tank bag isn't going to provide the solid mount required by most controllers.- 13 replies

Placing batteries on concrete will not cause them to discharge.

It was -20F here this morning. But we're supposed to get up to the mid 20's this afternoon. Doesn't look like we'll get that warm as it's only +10F...

No offense intended, but you may want to take a riding course or two before spending the money on a new bike. The RSV has very good brakes.

This sort of thing will probably come one day, but, for a lot of reasons, it's still a long way away. Commercial trucks used in interstate commerce already do this with IFTA, (International Fuel Tax Agreement). It's a fair way of insuring that each state and province get's their fair share of fuel taxes, but it's a PIA to do the quarterly reports.

It's a Yamaha RSV so I don't have a trailer for it... But my neighbor down the road has a Harley and thus has a motorcycle trailer. I doubt if I could talk him into a ride, but maybe I can borrow his trailer.

It’s officially 50F., bright sunshine, little wind, and I still can’t ride. The road between the house and the nearest pavement is still covered in ICE and snow. What a bummer. Winter is supposed to return on Thursday, and it’s unlikely that the road will clear before we get more snow. It’s been that way all winter, when just one more day of clear weather would open the road, more snow arrives. I certainly don’t want the drought years to return, but at least we could ride in the winter then. I guess I'll be:draming: until I can

Installing Hitch - Brake Controller Recommendations?
OB-1 replied to Cerviperus's topic in General Tech Talk
The brake controller varies the current to the magnets, (which controls the amount of braking force), based upon the brake controller’s perception of deceleration. The controller doesn’t activate the brakes until the brake lights on the tow vehicle are energized. Then, current is supplied to the brake magnets proportional to the deceleration sensed by the controller. This provides proportional braking. This system requires proper installation and adjustment of the controller and proper maintenance of the trailer brakes. Magnetic electric trailer brakes and their controllers are not designed for use on motorcycles. That doesn’t mean they can’t be adapted, but it then becomes a unique braking system. I have read that electric over hydraulic systems are more adjustable and controllable, but I have no experience with them. Be careful when putting brakes on a motorcycle trailer as too much trailer brake, especially in a curve, can be catastrophic.- 13 replies

I've always downshifted when slowing or stopping and never experienced any problems, even way back when I rode a 1976 FLH.

We installed a modern wood stove at the start of last winter. We only used 200 gallons of propane in the past year and most of that was probably burnt in the cook stove as I don’t recall the furnace coming on. We’re able to keep the house as warm as we want, which is very nice on our arthritic joints. We usually get up once during the night to feed the stove, but then we usually have to get up to go to the bathroom anyway so we make the most of it. Around here, a cord of wood generally costs about $150. We are fortunate enough to have enough land to be able to cut our own firewood, but we’ve had to spend the money for a chain saw and hydraulic wood splitter. The investment in equipment is still less than the cost of a winter of propane and besides, I like playing lumberjack.

And speaking of being stupid just once… :backinmyday:Back in 81 I out ran a state trooper on a Yamaha XS1100 that had just finished the 5000 mile initial break in period. Took the bike past redline in high gear which should have put me in +130mph area. I got away with it that time and have never done anything quite so stupid since. I almost ended up walking after outrunning the trooper and his support… I never stopped to think just how much fuel is consumed in a full throttle run.

See, I told ya the heat was headed your way!

The soaking is to remove the bugs, nothing else. You'll be amazed how easy it is to clean the windshield when you soak it with a wet towel for a few minutes. The whole idea is to keep from scrubbing and thus scratching the windshield. You can use rain-x on the windshield if you want, won't hurt a thing.

Relax Bubber, it's going to get warmer... The thaw is already beginning over here, its +25F already. The thaw should get to you in another day...or two:witch_brew:. We're predicted to be in the upper 40's tomorrow and the into the 50's for the next five or so days! The only problem with that is that we have a lot of snow and the ground is frozen solid so all the melt will run off. I hope the creek doesn't get too high as the the RSV makes a lousy boat... If we don't float away, the roads ought to melt clear and I may just get to do some riding early next week! You know, being from Minnesota, you're supposed to used to the cold...

I put the XXL Clearview windshield on my bike last year and my wife and I love it. There's no distortion in the windshield, but I did have a significant reflection off the gas cap. My wife fixed that with a bit of elastic and a piece of black cloth. She made a simple cover for the gas cap. This windshield provides much better protection for both of us than the stock windshield and is much easier to look through at night or in the rain.

I've got a Polaris 700 with a winch operated 6' blade and use it to plow a little over a mile of gravel road and driveway. This works fine as long as the snow isn't more than a foot or so deep. I get out the John Deere 4610 when the snow gets deeper then the ATV can easily handle.

Yes, please, photos would be greatly appreciated.

I tried that with a Harley about 27 years ago and it didn't work very well. The carrier bent right down to the ground as I pulled away from the loading ramp I used to get the front wheel into the carrier. The tow lasted all of four feet. I wouldn't recommend trying a front wheel carrier/tow arrangement for a bike as larger as ours.

You might want to check out this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=23909 before you get too excited. Car Tires aren't always the best thing on a Venture. Can you run one? Yes, but it will change the handling and not for the better. Some folks are willing to live with the inherent instability of a Car Tire, but I'm not.

Problem with new XXL Clearview
OB-1 replied to phochief's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I also have the XXL with vent and have not experienced glare or double vision from oncoming headlights. I do/did have a problem with sunlight reflecting off the gas cap causing a reflection in the windshield in my normal field of vision. My wife fixed that problem by making a black cloth cover for the gas cap.- 22 replies

It snowed again last night, just a little, but that’s just a little more snow that has to melt off the road before the bike can come out of hibernation.

I'd love to ride on the 1st, but closest I'll likely get is plowing snow on the ATV:snow:... At least it's got M/C plates!
