  1. Thanks for the tip! I ended up buying from CeeBaily's; I got the exact size I wanted at significantly less than any OEM shield I had seen anywhere. Delivery was about 1 1/2 weeks. Only caveat is that you need to use all the chrome from the original shield, but for me I have no use for the original shield due to the coating peeling off, so it worked out perfectly. Cleaned, polished and waxed everything and it all looked brand new when put together.
  2. Please remove me from the list. I found out a guy at work had a copy and he lent it to me to view. Thanks anyway!
  3. I also used the same thing during my maintenance fluid flushes this winter. As far as I can tell I have been shifting and stopping pretty regularly.
  4. My new-to-me 97 Tour Classic came with a Yamaha Windshield. It measures 23 1/2 inches from the headlight opening to the top. I assumed that was the "Tall" that was originally on the bike. The shield itself has the protective coating pealing off really badly which makes looking through it when the sun hits near impossible. So since I need a new windshield anyway, I am trying to purchase a "Medium" so that I can look over the top. Now as far as I can tell checking data from various websites the Yamaha windshields come in three sizes each 3 inches shorter than the next: Tall - 23 1/2 inches Medium - 20 1/2 inches Short - 17 1/2 inches So twice now I have won auctions from two different sellers on E-Bay selling a Medium Royal Star Windshield. Problem is when I get them they measure 17 1/2 inches which I believe to be a short - not the medium I thought I was buying. The first one the seller stated he was unsure and just "thought" it was a medium and took it back. The last one even had the following part number on it: STR-4NL07-10-00, which, when I looked it up showed a medium, but when I just opened the box it measures 17 1/2 inches again. So, as sit here for a second time very frustrated: What is the true measurement of the Yamaha "Medium"? What Yamaha Part Number should I be looking for if I want a medium shield for a 97 Tour Classic?

    Insurance cost

Just switched Yesterday. I've had both my cars and house w/Allstate for the last 11 years, but always had Progressive for my motorcycle. Allstate called and asked to give me quote because their rates have dropped for motorcycles; to my surprise it was 40% less that what I was paying w/Progressive. Full coverage, with towing, now costs me $114/year.
  6. The Beast. I bought my 97 after I had a Honda Shadow VLX for 7 years. At twice the engine, 2 1/2 times the weight and three times the horsepower; it just seemd to fit.
  7. Have a new to me 97 and don't have the cables to lock my helmet under the seat (not sure I like that option anyway). What has anyone else done as a useful option that they are pleased with? I as looking at the Kuryakyn Universal Helmet Lock, but have two concerns; 1) Is it wide enough to mount on the stick sissy bar? 2) Does it rattle? I've seen a few reviews saying so, but they seem to be in the minority; the rattle would be a deal breaker. Thanks!
  8. The leather saddlebags that came with my recently purchased Tour Classic could use a good cleaning and then some type of protectent. Does anyone have any recommendation for what products to use for cleaning; and then what to use for protecting the leather? Thanks!
  9. Thanks to all for all the suggestions. Just a quick update in the "Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good" category - Tried the slightly larger Torx. Pounded it in but it was just too rounded already and I ended up rounding it even more. Got the Dremel out and was going to cut the slot when I thought it might be rounded out just enough to now allow the next larger SAE hex to fit. Got out the Craftsman T-handle SAE (I figured if it broke I could get a free replacement), pounded it in with a hammer, and it gripped just long enough to allow me to turn it out about 1 1/2 turns before it too stripped. But now it was sticking out enough that I could get a good grab with the vice-grips and I was able to get it out all the way. Fantastic!
  10. Went to take the tank off this evening; one front side Allen head bolt removed with ease; the other one stripped like butter. Now what? Can't grip the head with vice grips; tried three different styles/size with no success. Cutting off the head would do no good because the bolt sticks out about 1/2 inch into the gas tank mount. The gas tank mount doesn't seem to have much give to pry it from the bolt if all that was removed was the head. Any ideas?
  11. I've been doing a lot of tear down and maintenance on my new-to-me 1997 RSTC. The more I think about it, the more I could see the Harbor Freight Motorcycle Stand/Wheel Chock coming in very handy. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97841 I have a coupon that has it at $39 and was wondering if anyone has one, or has any comments. The spec is that it will hold a tire from 15 to 22 inches, but doesn't sate a maximum width, and we do have very wide front tires. Is this sturdy enough to hold up an 800 lb RSTD?
  12. Just wanted to say thanks for the tip. I thought I had messed up and it was going to cost me quite a few $$ to fix. Striped and screwed in as instructed, took it for a ride yesterday; and things are running perfect. Thanks again!
  13. Thanks for the tip - just some clarification - Do I need to strip any of the insulation off the wire, or just a straight cut across the insulation & wire 1/4 inch down from the break?
  14. I was replacing the spark plugs on my 97 Tour Classic and in the process of struggling with removing one of the spark plug wires the wire came out of the boot. Seemed to be much too clean of a break; looked like it was cut with a knife the break was so clean. How do these connect within the boot themselves? I am assuming I now have to replace the entire assembly (coil plus wire), correct? Is there any way to repair it?
  15. Bought a new-to-me 97 Royal Star Classic. Since I am not sure of the maintenance history I was going to change (among other things) the spark plugs and wires. Any recommendations on what brand of wires, or where to purchase from? Thanks.
  16. I am going to replace my Cobra slash cut drag pipe mufflers (soon to be for sale) with the original OEM mufflers on my 97 Royal Star Classic. When I look at the parts diagram (see attached) for the exhaust, it looks as if I need to replace as many as 10 gaskets just by changing mufflers (parts 2; 6(2); 10; 14(2); 18(2) and 22(2)) at a cost of approx $160 delivered which is almost as much as I paid for the OEM mufflers! Does anyone know exactly which gaskets truly need to be replaced when changing back to all 4 OEM mufflers? I'd obviously like to have them on-hand when I do the swap. Thanks!
  17. Need a few things like several gaskets, air & fuel filters, etc. Local dealer wants full MSRP and states they won't match prices. Any good on-line sources for discounts on genuine Yamaha parts?
  18. Got this one scoped out since my 97 is brand new (to me) and I can't ride it 'cause of the weather: - Remove Cobra Drag Pipes and sell them - Find good, clean '97 RSTD OEM mufflers - buy and install - Remove trailer hitch and sell it - Remove/replace Coolant - Remove/replace all Brake fluid including Clutch lines - Drain/replace rear fluid - Change oil/filter - Replace air filter - Replace spark plugs - Install additional lighting in the rear; at a minimum add night rider bar - Install Stebel Air horn - Install Ram mount for GPS and figure out how to run power to it
  19. I would also like to be added to the list. Thanks and Great idea!
  20. I posted this on the Watering Hole, but it got lost so quickly I thought it might be more appropriate here. One of my winter projects is to add additional lighting to the back of my new-to-me 97 RSTD. I've read the many threads here on that subject, but was thinking the best method is to spread them out for maximum impact. There are many threads here on how people have added additional running/brake lights to their hard bags, but I was curios if anyone has added additional running/brake lights to the back of their leather bags? I'd be interested in what you used, and of course, pics! Thanks!
  21. I have a Garmin 205 that I used for 2 years on my Honda VLX (I used a Ram Mount) and plan to mount it now on my RSTD. It is not water proof (I rarely ride in the rain) but has worked flawlessly and was less than $100. I also use it in my car. I don't see any reason, for me anyway, to spend more for a "motorcycle" version. Some may need it for the waterproofing, but if you're not going to be in the rain often, and needing the GPS at the same time, the regular Garmins work great.
  22. Thanks - I am most definitely interested. I'll PM you with additional info.

  24. Thanks! I didn't even consider Cobra's.
  25. Thanks for the tip; I tried to look at the back for what little I could see; but that isn't much - a lot more to see if I'd remove them. I did try the short shifting; still really loud.
