If your battery cables are making good connections my money is on the battery. That is the first thing I would check. I had a 10 month old Everstart go kaput last year and couldn't believe it but it happens. I would jump start it just to confirm it is not your starter relay or switch. Good Luck.

I now have balloons. Apparently it just takes a few minutes after you enter your information.

No balloons here either.

Is there a how to for Igniton Switch Relay?
rowdy7 replied to bmxndad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
There is some great info in the Tech section under computers, electrical, etc. Pictures, good write up, emergency bypass, etc. If yours has already been changed out once, you won't have much trouble changing it out again. A big part of the change out was removing the headless? screws. -
It sounds to me like your Internet Explorer browser is corrupted. Use another computer and download a free Firefox or Google Chrome browser on a thumb drive. Install it on your computer and use it to access the internet. I had to do this in Brasil a couple of years ago when my IE got screwed and restore would not fix it. Good luck.

Trunk button head cap screw size
rowdy7 replied to Bwhite's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
92014-08020-00BOLT, BUTTON HEAD Which means it is 8mm by 20mm long. I am assuming you are referring to a 2nd gen RSV trunk. I had the same problem and I used loctite on these. Boomer is correct about NOT getting any loctite on the ABS. -

Come October I will commence my 8th decade of inhaling this earthly atmosphere. Jim -
I don't post much but I have to share this. I went to my 4th PGR mission today at DFW National and while waiting for the briefing a medium sized HD (maybe a Dyna, I think bigger than a Sportster, not really sure, I was looking at the guy in amazement) came tooling by ridden by a guy with his right arm completely missing. Turns out he was part of the escort for the hero and part of the funeral party so I didn't get a chance to talk to him or look at his bike closer. Yall may have seen this before but it was a new one on me. I'm still slack jawed about it. He was a real slim dude, too. Couldn't have weighted over 150 lbs. Maybe less. I was impressed. Just Jim

I plan to commence my eighth decade of sucking up this atmosphere around Halloween this year.

Welcome to the club. Have you been able to wipe that smile off your face yet? Don't ask how I know this. I really am envious of that color.

I purchased a new '09 FJR 1300AE, the electric clutch model, in December and love it. It is smooth, powerful, nimble and just a fun ride. It will never be as comfortable on a long trip as my RSV but I believe the RSV is going to have to go. I'm 6-2 & 210 with long arms so I can sit more upright than some shorter people on it. I plan to order some of Wild Bills plates for forward road pegs and I feel a seat upgrade is in the future also. You can buy and extended service plan from Yamaha to add years of service to your warranty. You have a year from the date of purchase to buy it but your dealer probably will not tell you this. Mine didn't. You can shop around on the net for a good price for the plan. There is apparently no set price. I believe you will like the FJR. Give me a call if you have any questions about it. Ride Safe, Jim

My new Road King Mufflers came with a wig?"
rowdy7 replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That hairy stuff is definitely not part of the muffler. The bolt size is 5/16"NC. I used 1" long. The right side muffler should have a cat converter in it. Look in the inlet. It will look like a honeycomb. The left side will not have it. If you have trouble slipping it on the exhaust pipe, Harbor Freight has an exhaust expander tool for +-$10 that did the trick for me. It only needed a little bit but it sure made a difference. -
RSTD die when shift to 1st (or 2nd....!!!) help please!!
rowdy7 replied to joetx67's topic in General Tech Talk
I may be missing something here but if I was going to check my clutch I would: Put bike in 1st gear, pull the clutch lever and try to roll the bike. If it rolls the clutch is releasing. (it starts right away while in neutral, not matter side stand position, and die immediatly if shift to 1st or 2nd gear) Sure sounds electrical to me. What, if anything, electrical is connected to the shift lever/gears? The neutral light and the 5th gear light are all that come to mind. My RSV manual shows a "self diagnosis procedure" for the CC. I assume the RSTD has one also. Since the problems seem to have started there I would run that procedure. Since you just got the bike you may not have a manual but there is one on this site somewhere.- 43 replies

Red Ryder, Nexen makes a 165/80/15 that is as close to the original tire height as you can get. Discount Tire website has a neat tire sizer program. Jim

Need Prayers for Ponch!!!
rowdy7 replied to Sweetnothing's topic in Inspirational, Motivational, Prayer Requests, Etc.
I just saw this thread and didn't realize I had been gone so long. I bought a new (to me) '00 Concours this summer and have been educating myself on it on the Connie forums and neglecting the VR forums. I was speechless to read what happened to Ponch. I have only met a few of the VR members and Ponch was one of them. What a great guy. He rode all the way from Waco to my house on a cold rainy Saturday to help me (more like I helped him) install a guage set on my bike. My heart goes out to him and his family. More prayers on the way from north Texas. Jim -
I need a new rear tire for my '07 RSV and want to try a CT. I want a 165/80/15 but the Kumho that everyone seems satisfied with is no longer available. Ponch dissed the Nexen and I respect that. That leaves a Nankang or maybe a Federal. Anyone with experience with a Nankang?? I really don't want to go with a 155 such as the BFG TA. My speedometer is off bad enough as it is. And, I don't want to run higher rpms for same speed. And, I don't want the bike lower. I already have leveling links to raise the rear!!! I've not seen many posts since the Kumhos became scarce. I even did some lurking on the darksiders.com forum and no help. What is the popular tire now? I want to get what the general consensus of the users on this forum think is the best CT tire for the RSV and give it a good shot. Your experienced comments are very much appreciated. Jim

Tandy Leather Factory has the leather lacing but you will probably have to braid it yourself like Hipshot said.

Yeah, that. Are your headlights coming on when you turn the key on? If they are, your starter relay should click when you press the start button. If the headlights are not coming on, I would clean all connections. You may want to try a jump start. New batteries don't have to be good. As per other comments I have read on this site, DON'T leave the car running while you jump start. I don't remember the reason why, but it sounded like good advice at the time. Starter relay can be bad. There is also a pink connector under the gas tank that is apparently famous for going bad. There are some writeups on this site about it. Hope this helps. I just went through a 10 month old battery conking out on me and I checked all these things out only to find my battery that was showing 13 volts was kaput. If you can tell them exactly what is happening, there are a lot of people on this site can tell you what is wrong. Good luck. By the way, if you own an RSV you can't spend a better 12 bucks for supporting membership.

I have a set of Ponch's gauges and love them but I sure like what you did with the cruise control button and voltmeter. Looks great. Just Jim

Pretty neat looking gadget. I bet Midrsv would have loved to have had one on his bike today when the idiot at the Shell station pulled a hit & run on him while he was inside. I may have to have one.

Maybe next time. I took it back to Wally world and they put it on their little "battery checker thingy" and it said the battery was OK. I told her to warranty it out and they gave me a new battery for free (mine was less than a year old). So the price was right and the new battery works fine. Condor: The battery maintainer seems to be working fine. Thanks for all the replies. Jim

Good question. I figured the PO and me just let the first one sit too long without running. Maybe 4-5 months. The second one is Wally World. What can I say?? Obviously a bad choice. I thought I was doing good running a maintainer on it.
