Pretty simple really. There were some complaints that the locking mechanism would occasionally give way and there have been "reports" of the Zumo flying off and shattering on the road. Just in case this has happened...I came up with this (something similar to what I had seen someone else do)...and now I have PEACE OF MIND when I am not only riding, but also just removing the GPS from the mount...to me that is when there is the greatest chance of dropping it. Very simple...very effective. Hope you can use it. Wally

Like several others on here (including FreeBird), I have had several Garmin units and have helped numerous buddies install Garmin units on their bikes. The units ranged from the Zumo 665 all the way down to the cheapest Garmin available and even some OLD Garmin units (I had the 2610 on my bike at one point a few years ago). Anyway, I also had the Zumo 550 and now have the Zumo 665. Of all the ones I have owned, the Zumo 665 is the best, but then it should be since it is latest "motorcycle" GPS Garmin has out there. Let me just say that when an GPS (computer) is geared towards a single niche (like motorcycles)...it will do somethings well and other things not so well. In other words, there are complaints that the zumo line of GPS's still have a "bug" or two. Your level of annoyance with these "bugs" is proportional to the features you use. I really like my zumo 665 (coming from the zumo 665 which I also liked a lot). I like the form factor, I like that it is water resistant (although I still baggie mine in the rain), I like that it has XM radio, and I have even grown to like the wiring harness better than the zumo 550. The latching mechanism for the zumo 665 is weak, but a quick little mod for that makes that a no count. I have not had any problems with the antenna placement for the zumo 665, but I started with my placement on the opposite side of the bike. The lane assist is nice, the tour guides (although primitive) are also fun to have. Admittedly, I am not a power user, although I do use the unit EVERY TIME I RIDE. The zumo 550 is also an excellent unit. I think they had more battery problems than they have with other units, but overall it is a proven GPS. As for the guy that mentioned the Nuvi line of GPS. HECK YEAH. The things you give up are moderate to minor conveniences that are either not needed or can be overcome. And for most of the Nuvi line of GPS's, you can find adapters, mounts and power cables for motorcycle installs.

Beer30, I hope this brings this soldier's family the peace and comfort they deserve for paying the ultimate sacrifice in giving his life for his country. SALUTE! May God bless them all.

Comfortable top freeway speed....anywhere from 50mph up to 85mph. Other's may feel comfortable going faster than that, but for me that is my normal freeway speeds. And it is not unusual for me to do 80mph from stop to stop (ie. Interstate 40 I ride alot).

Audio Controller Intermittent Problem
rumboogy replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK...I think that did the TRICK. I have rode the bike over 50 miles without as much as even a flicker. Just to summarize...I took the fairing off, and used dielectric grease on ALL of the booted connectors and also on all of my audio connectors for my GPS. The light on the audio controller looks MUCH brighter and now the text looks darker...my conclusion was that indeed the connectors had a loose connection. So if anyone has problems with their audio controller freezing up, flickering, going blank...then you might try this before taking it to the dealer. I assume I will need to do this periodically, so I plan on doing this every spring. Thanks to all the helped with this thread...your insights and suggestions were invaluable.- 21 replies

There have been people literally beat to death because they copped an attitude with a 1%'er over what their "constitutional rights" are... And while I agree this is a free country and a person should be able to do whatever they want within the confines of the law, this is one of those cases where you're not gonna win. If I remember correctly, there was a guy in Oklahoma a couple of years ago that decided he was not going to comply with the unwritten rule of displaying club logos and rockers...if memory serves me correctly, they beat him almost to death. Even if you win the skirmish...you'll lose the war.

OK...these may seem like simple little insignificant things to carry on a long distance trip, but I can tell you that I have used BOTH and they are invaluable! The first is (and don't laugh) Bike Condoms. What are Bike Condoms? They are small compact individually packaged DISPOSABLE motorcycle covers. The are packed (and I mean REALLY PACKED) into a small 5x8x2 soft pouch that is resealable (in case you want to reuse the cover). They work very well and they are for all practical purposes very inexpensive...especially if you buy in bulk. The material is a vinyl type plastic with some stretch and elastic all the way around the edges. THEY FIT ALMOST ANY BIKE (and yes they do fit the Venture). The cost of each package is $9.99. But you can buy 5 packages at $7.99 and 10 packages at 6.99. Most of us probably have bike covers, but the unique things about this one is first, it is disposable so if you do tear it...you haven't spent that much, but more importantly, packing them for a long trip is where this product shines. The pouch is only 5x8" and slim enough to fit ANYWHERE. I have been giving these away as prizes at my biker website parties and everyone has provided positive feedback. Here is the link: http://www.bikecondoms.com/index.php/bikecondoms-store/details/20/6/original-bikecondom/the-original-bikecondom ******************************************************************* My next little product to talk about may not be able to be used by everyone unless you have a clearview or F4 Customs shield, for those people this is also a MUST PACK item for your long trips. Most of you have probably heard of this one. Rain*X Towlettes. They come in a small individual packet (and only .99 cents at autozone), and do a great job of cleaning the windshield and also coating with Rain*X at the same time. I carry a zip lock bag and reuse those too...they work extremely well. Too many times I have stopped at a gas station only to find out they don't have any water OR any towels. This takes care of that problem completely!! Here is a link for that product (or you can get it almost any car store). [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Rain-X-RAIN-X-TOWELETTE/dp/B000BPSVVE]Amazon.com: RAIN-X TOWELETTE: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21y4rZdqvVL.@@AMEPARAM@@21y4rZdqvVL[/ame] Just thought I would share a couple of things I use in my packing when going on long trips. HOW ABOUT YOU...what is something useful that YOU carry that others might not know about.

Audio Controller Intermittent Problem
rumboogy replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK...cracked the fairing and started messing with the connections and adding dielectric grease to each of the connections. I was able to do the 4 MAIN booted connectors (one of which was the audio controller cause I saw it go off when I unplugged it). I also did the grease thing on all the audio connections (those were acting fine though). So MAYBE this problem will go away. Fingers crossed!- 21 replies

Since it's been a while since this has been talked about...I thought I would start another discussion to see if any "advances" have been made in TENT TECHNOLOGY. Obviously quick set-up and compactness when traveling is most important. Anything new on the TENT front. Wally

Her site is down right now due to a SERVER problem. They are working on it and hopefully it will be back tomorrow. In the mean time...you can email her at: nanci@shasta.com She is easy to work with and you can let her know what you are wanting...or just talk to her. I would assume her site will be back up tomorrow.

First off... I have a 2009 RSV. I have really grown to love this bike (finally), although I still have a few minor complaints. But I am having an electrical issue that is DRIVING ME NUTS (kinda). The audio controller locked up after only having the bike for about 3 months. None of the buttons or switches worked at that time. I believe when it happened the FIRST time...I did something with the CB switch and it started working again, but that was about a year ago now. It happened one other time...very similar...turning the bike all the way (turning the KEY all the way off) and then back on...made the unit work. Now today, while on a 200 mile ride...the audio cutout, and when I looked at the audio controller, the HEADPHONES icon was on (top right corner of controller)...AND the controller was going dim, then blank, then back on again. So I thought maybe it could be a loose wire or power issue. I pulled off the road, turned the key/bike off...turned it back on and it worked fine again. Started riding again, and the AUDIO STAYED PERFECT...but the LCD on the controller started getting dim and disappearing and then coming back clear...the AUDIO STAYED PERFECT during the time the LCD kept dimming and disappearing. So now I am thinking it is a defective controller or something since the Audio did work even when the LCD was blank. Problem is that now it's working again and...most of you know how hard it is to FIX SOMETHING THAT AIN'T BROKE!!! Anyone else have this malady going on... Wally

Nanci does GREAT work. I don't think she can make the pocket look like the Hopnel pocket, but I HATED that pocket anyway...way too big. Anyway...Nanci does a great job. (that was a non-paid endorsement for her product). http://www.acehighleathers.com

Evidently...that server is down for the moment.

AMA members select America's 15 best motorcycling roads
rumboogy replied to Michael_Bishop's topic in Watering Hole
Sometimes beauty is in the EYE OF THE BEHOLDER!! I find it very hard to believe that Route 66 did not make the top 15. I would "Venture" (no pun intended) to say that more people have ridden (and enjoyed) Route 66 than ALL the other roads put together! Not only that, Route 66 (The Mother Road) is all about the American way of life and what better way to enjoy America than to ride this anthem of history on a bike, or in a convertible or with a hotrod! I have done parts of THE ROUTE 5 times and every time I am fascinated by the contradiction of a dying culture against the beauty of those trying to preserve and survive the BIG INTERSTATES. I'm not knocking those that DID make the top 15, but to leave out Route 66 is just a shame...it's like turning your back on your parents!- 22 replies

Go to Autozone (or other parts store), and pick up the RUBBER SPRING STIFFENERS (under $10 for 2 of them) and then use a hack saw to make them the size you need.
-
I plan on being there!!

Nanci at http://acehighleathers.com/ Nanci does great work and can customize it almost any way you want. I don't know her price list since I got a package deal on 3 different items. But she is reasonable. Wally

Rick...you'll really enjoy the gas cap and the way it cuts glare and also saves your seat from getting gas on it from the gas cap. It's a great fit.
-
OK...I'm gonna post my new bib (very similar to my first one)...and the new gas cap. These gas caps are GREAT as a decorative item and even better in use for limiting GLARE off the gas cap and also giving you a place to put your gas cap when filling up. These are a combination of regular pictures and iPhone pics.
-
I recognize the work there. Nanci does a great job and that looks great. Love the pattern!! She just did another bib and gas cap for me...I'm going to post mine in a day or two. I am very happy with what she does and I'm just telling you...the GAS CAP COVER is invaluable both as a decorative item and also as a UTILITY ITEM (a place to put your gas cap when filling up). Wally

A few of us are planning a trip to the Badlands, Rushmore and some Wyoming riding (or anything else around there). But we are wondering about the timing of our trip. We plan on leaving July 22-31 and the Sturgis Rally is going to be from August 8-14. Will we have any difficulty getting rooms from July 24, 25 and 26? Opinions? Also...we had planned to stay in Rapid City, SD and use that as a "staging" place for all of our day trips. But after looking at the map, I am thinking that Custer, SD would be a better staging place...they have motels and it makes the southern part (badlands, Wyoming, rushmore) more accessible since our only trip north will be a quick (very quick) trip through Sturgis. Are there any other OFF THE WALL things to see in the area that most people don't know about? How about any recommendations on Motels in the Custer, SD area?

Why are we required to fill in the "Name" field in our Profile now?
rumboogy replied to a topic in Watering Hole
Seriously though...I am not saying we should supply SSN#'s or anything like that, but a first name at the very least shouldn't be a big deal (unless your name is goobernuts or something). Really, if you want to remain anonymous (TRULY ANONYMOUS)...the internet is probably not the place to be...maybe Montana or Wyoming, but not the internet.
