Hi Jerry...do you know how he shortens it? Does he cut off the foot and then weld another on? $50 is not a problem and I also have a replacement for your kickstand if need be. I do think the safest fix for this would be to remove the material near the foot and then replace the foot. Let me know. Wally

I had my bike lowered with lowering links which makes my bike much easier to move around when I'm just rolling it around in parking lots..or even the garage. Anyway, although the kickstand works OK as it is now...ANY type of sloping surface (even the slightest slope) makes it feel like the bike is sitting straight up, so I want to SHORTEN my kickstand. So I bought a used kickstand on eBay and got it today. I thought my neighbor could fix this for me, but he says he can't weld cast iron...so now I am looking for someone to shorten the kickstand for me (preferably someone that has done this before). I would want a finished look and will pay for the job. I did look in the classifieds, but couldn't any appropriate section (maybe "wanted to buy"), but decided I would post here first. Anyone interested? Wally

I saw this stuff mentioned on another website (and maybe even this site somewhere) and thought I would try it. I have LOTS of trouble with my sunglasses fogging up. In fact, they fog up EVERY time I put them on and stayed fogged up UNTIL I started moving. Not only is this dangerous, but it's annoying as hell...and very distracting when I first take off. This fogging occurs EVERY TIME during ANY KIND of weather!!!! Therefore I can safely state that I could reproduce this "fogging" anytime and every time. I received the product today...so before I used it, I went ahead and put my sunglasses on and sure enough after about 30 seconds the corners of the sunglasses fogged up enough to where I could not see. I went back in and coated my glasses with the Clarity DeFog It and then went back outside...put the glasses on and NO FOG...wore them for about 5-10 minutes before getting on the bike and going out for a ride (after all, it was a pretty day). So I am a fan now. More testing will follow, but I saw difference like NIGHT and DAY. Now about the product. It can be used on almost any type of lens (polycarbonate, glass, etc)...and special coatings of the lens will NOT interfere with use of this product. It's not expensive to buy (although you don't get much), and a TINY, TINY bit goes a LOOOOONG way!!! I used 3 VERY small dabs on the lens and it worked fine. The product comes packaged with only 5ml of fluid and a special cloth to use, but it's only $5.99 for the liquid and $7.99 for the dried towelettes. I just ordered another bottle and also this time the towelettes...and expect those to last a LONG TIME!!! https://www.defogitworks.com/everyday

risers and throttle cables
rumboogy replied to atlm's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Mike...sorry to hear you are still having problems with the cables. Like I told you, I was pretty put off that mine too stuck for a little while...but I pulled and pulled (not hard though)...and although they moved very little...it was enough to see an IMPROVEMENT, however now there is no sticking at all now. I hope someone can come on here and give you some good advice. Wally -
I am always asking questions and getting great advice and tips from everyone on here...thought I would give back (if only a little). I recently spoke (in another thread) about my first longer ride and the use of the headset vs speakers vs earbuds, and how I rated each of them. Just to summarize...I rated these three options on a scale of 10. Speakers .... 4 Headset...... 2 Earbuds....... 8 (maybe even a 9 on a better set of buds) Anyway, in order to utilize the headset with earbuds you need the motorcycle adapter to convert the headset to a mini-plug. The first one I bought I paid over $50.00 for it at a 3rd party location on the net...however I found the actual vendor online and now this adapter can be had for only $24.95. Here is the company URL: http://plugup.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7&products_id=19 Like I said, using the earbuds is a HUGE improvement sound wise, as well as eliminating the wind and motor noise (got rid of my WHINE ). I know there might be some safety issues with earbuds, that's something you'll have to work out on your own...but for MUCH BETTER SOUND...this is the ONLY way to go. Wally

I too am looking at the F4. I will make the "move" as soon as we go through some hot weather to see how much I feel I would want a vent (vs the noise, the bugs and STICKING) you would get from a vent vs the positives of having some airflow behind the windscreen. But, here's my thinking...Polycarbonate vs Acrylic. I like the fact that with polycarbonate it is shatter resistant and scratch resistant!! I bet just about EVERYONE on on this site has something made out of polycarbonate whether it be prescription glasses, sunglasses, safety glasses, or any other uses for this amazing material. Oakleys, Raybans, and other high end glasses ALL use polycarbonate. We even use it in my laboratory (clinical laboratory). Anyway, I like the PROTECTIVE properties of polycarbonate. I mean we all (most of us anyway) wear helmets, wear leathers, wear goggles...well you get my drift, this could be just ANOTHER safety device on the bike. Here's a video by National Cycle that I saw a LONG time ago that has really made me think twice about a polycarbonate windshield. I am pretty convinced. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hsls5ZPCUnE]YouTube- Polycarbonate vs Acrylic Plastic[/ame] As for the VENT, I believe I read somewhere that they might be able to put one in...or at the very least use a hole saw to insert some vent circles or something like that.

Yes sir...SilvrT, that's some pretty sage advice. Thank you. Wally

It's pretty much because the dealer's (service) are clueless about the bike. Especially the front people. The last time I took my bike in, I was hasseled about installing my Zumo GPS by cracking open the fairing...after a short standoff, I finally got my way. Now the actual tech did a pretty good job, but the service people up front are not the brightest bulbs on the tree. But today was a REAL PAIN. It was time for my 600 mile FIRST SERVICE. Plus they are supposed to install running lights that I bought when I bought the bike and the mounts just now came in...anyway, I asked that when it was installed to do it using a relay...they balked, and said, "it depends on the kit"...but we never heard of using a relay for the passing lights. Then I asked if they could pump about 5 lbs air into the front forks and about 15 pounds in the shocks on the back...they said, "Sorry sir, we don't have a hand pump". And then he says, "No one has ever brought their bike in for air in the shocks, they are set up from the factory". ??????? WHAT????? And finally, I told them when I checked my bike this morning, there were two small oil spots underneath the bike and could they please check them out, he just kinda brushed it off and said their guy would check the whole bike over...so we'll see how it works out. But I NOW know why there are so many TECH DAYS and so many guys that work on their own bikes. Wally

I'm sorry...he did say leveling links...I assume these are different than lowering links...which is what I got. Wally -

Maybe some do, but the only ones I have heard of lower the backend by about 1.5 inches. Wally -

I too think the mileage is off a little, but I am not that worried right now...I only have 685 miles on the bike and next week I get the first service out of the way...I assume that as the breakin occurs, gas mileage will go up. Also...I did go ahead and "wind" it out a little on the interstate...hit 90mph (actual GPS indicated) a couple of times. -
OK, so as some of you know, I bought my bike on December 11th. I brought it straight home on a 30 degree day and parked it in the garage. It sat there for more than 2 weeks without being moved and although I did have a couple of 5, 10 and 20 miles rides (and maybe the longest was 60 miles)...I still didn't really get a chance to "enjoy" the bike. And frankly, I was pretty disappointed with my decision to trade my 6 year old VTX in on this RSV. I had 2 months of buyers remorse!! But during the last 2 months I did do some mods on the bike. I had the seat done by Rick Butler (thank you sir), I had the back lowered with lowering links, I added risers, a stebel horn, and finally a garage button. Today, I finally got a chance to put some SERIOUS miles on the bike...a 250 mile day (and some of the best BBQ I have had in a long, long time). So a buddy (he rides a 950) and I rode over to Helena, AR to check out a motel that he wants to stay in during the upcoming Wild Hog Music Fest Rally on April 22-24. It's about 125 miles over there (250 miles round trip)...and a small amount of interstate (30 miles). Today was GORGEOUS...temps in the mid 60's and sunny...just a great day for a ride. So there's the background...now the ride. First and foremost, after today's ride I am no longer suffering from buyer's remorse. The ride was very comfortable and I am starting to get used to the gearing. The power on a longer ride is much more appreciated...short rides you just can't appreciate the acceleration this bike has got. Handling was much better also on the longer ride. I am very comfortable in cornering now. So that's the good...and really there is no bad, but just some other observations. 1. I did go over a couple of large bumps and it may have bottomed out...I don't know for sure though. 2. I really don't like the the way they have the fuel alert system set up. My F alert comes on at 147 miles and shortly thereafter the FUEL LIGHT and then the bike starves for fuel (just like everyone here has said)...and I am afraid of how far I can go on the reserve. 3. The audio system, CB, my Zumo and then the Speakers, Helmet with Edsets and my Shure Earbuds - I could never get the CB to work the way I wanted it too...maybe I just need to work on it some more. I rarely heard anyone on it (when I was on the interstate), and no one would return my radio check (no, I wasn't annoying ). I have mixed feelings about the speakers on the bike. Sometimes they aren't too bad, and other times they just sound real "tinny" and "hollow". A lot depends on the genre of music and of course the quality of the signal or mp3 playing. I purchased a Scorpion Helmet (3/4) and sent it off to Edsets to have their helmet speaker system installed into the helmet. To be honest, I believe the fairing speakers sound better (to me) than the Edsets. The Edsets had virtually no bass and sound volume was not very impressive. The hookup, and utility for the other features of the headset are probably fine, but for me the sound out of the speakers left a little to be desired. Later in the ride I plugged in my adapter to be able to use my earbuds to hear the audio system including my Zumo 660 directions and the MP3 player on it. WOW...what a beautiful difference it made. I had used these same earbuds with this same Zumo on my other bike and the earbuds were directly connected to the Zumo...sound was still very good, but the volume was always at MAX levels. Now with the Zumo being played through the RSV audio system, the AMP makes this MUCH better quality and volume. If I had assign a number grade to the three options of listening to audio on the RSV, I would rate them in the following order on a 10 point scale. Fairing Speakers - 4 Edset Helmet Speakers - 2 Earbuds (Shure or otherwise) - 8 I'm a pretty happy camper right now. Not ecstatic yet, but happy. I hope that most of issues I have had with the bike are just not being familiar with how the bike handles and operates. I got time! Thanks to everyone for your help and I do appreciate the tips and suggestions many of you have offered. Wally

My recommended RSV mods

Funny you mention the tool kit. I didn't dump the kit...something tells me to always KEEP the original tools (or at least some of them). So I put together the tools I wanted to have on my bike, or at least the tools I wanted in the bags. So, since the saddlebags have a "pocket" the toolkit sits in (on both sides)...I decided to make my own tool pouches and STOCK them with the tools I wanted. Alright...so DON'T laugh. I made my TWIN pouches out of .... DUCT TAPE!! Yep, duct tape and they turned out very well. I made them the same dimensions as the original flimsly plastic pouch. In one pouch I placed the original tools (minus the pliers) and added some better pliers, and a crescent wrench. In the other pouch I put in a metric socket set, a hex set, and a small set of wire cutters. Both pouches fit neatly in their little space and now I have LOTS of tools to carry if I ever need them. Totally agree...EXCELLENT MOD!!!

You should not ride and eat cheetos at the same time. Just kidding...maybe some wd40 might disolve some of the gunk...but I would ask someone with more expertise than me on electricity.

The first Ice Hockey game in the Olympics was in 1920. However the birth of Hockey came during a professional boxing match in 1898 when Gentleman Jim Corbett fought Iron Face Max Dunavin in Carthage, NY. As legend has it, Corbett busted Dunavin's jaw in the 23rd round and knocked his dentures out of his mouth...they hit the canvas and the managers ran out into the ring and began trying to sweep the dentures out of the ring with a broom... And this is where the quotation, "I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out" came from... It's all in the history books...just check wikipedia.

OK Guys...I am from the South... Is this what they call a COLD WAR??
-
Speaking for myself...I don't think there is anything actually "wrong" with it...however the sound is weak (I'm speaking of quality not loudness)....and a better set of speakers and a nice quality amp would make the sound more "pleasing" to listen to instead of hollow bass and treble we get now. Just for curiosity sake...and from a lay person (so speak in beginners english)... How many channels How many Watts Maximum dimensions Power requirements Could you provide that information. Also..would the dimensions you provide be ONLY for the Cassette Deck bay or would you consider mounting in other locations? Also...would it be possible to connect the stock system directly to the amp and run the amp that way (see I told you I was a layperson). Thanks for any info...maybe if enough of us look...someone might find something. Wally

Great Idea for an Interior Trunk Light!

Hey Bob...what about the mercury switch...where'd you get that at and how did you wire it...and what about placement of the lights for the best directional lighting...I would love to do this on my bike. Wally
