Kingbird, Here's my answers (and opinions) on the zumo and your questions: Does the Zumo plug into the bike's existing sound system? If so, how does it connect? Yes, it will plug into the RSV audio system and play through the AUX mode. Most of us have accomplished this with a Y adapter inside the fairing. Detailed instructions can be found here. If so does it then play through the AUX function? Yes...it does play through the AUX mode. I understand the Zumo is Bluetooth compatible. Is that correct? Can you receive calls through your helmet headset? Yes. (zumo 550/660/665 are all bluetooth capable. Yes, with the correct cables this can be accomplished (Buddy Rich cable). See detailed instructions here. From reading the various threads about the Zumo it sounds as though the newer version may be significantly improved over the 550. Any thoughts on that? Yep, it is improved. However the zumo 550 is still a great navigator, MP3, and XM radio. The zumo 660 has a bigger screen and some other functional things that make it a nice upgrade to the 550, HOWEVER...the zumo 660 does not have XM radio, weather or traffic. The zumo 665 (with newest software) is DABOMB. It has animated weather (albeit 3 image animations), but it also has alerts for closed roads, fog, rain in the area, snow and WIND!!! As far as playing the MP3 music, do you load the Zumo from your computer at home or does it have a jack to plug an iPod into? Yes, you load the music directly onto the zumo MicroSD card or you can load it directly onto the card through a card reader. No you can't plug an iPod into it. Part of the high cost of the zumo's is because all 3 models include BOTH the automotive mounts and motorcycle mounts. The zumo 665 also INCLUDES the XM radio antenna. Hope this helps. Wally

Does the Venture make my head big? Actually, this is still a project in the works. The guy that is doing this caricature is excellent...he is only part of the way done with this so far. Can't wait to see the finished product. Here's a couple of comparison pics...this guy is good...very good.

3000 miles ago...I changed from Yamalube to the Rotella T6 oil. I also added 8oz of Motorkote. My whine and chirping sounds improved about 50%...but I still have the sounds. However, it does seem like they are more predictable about what gear and what RPM they occur. 4th gear 48-51 mph...is the worst. Wally

Don....they did update the firmware on the 665 about a week ago....WONDERFUL unit. Almost all of the bugs have been fixed (I have had ZERO shutdowns)...mine is working fine. Anyway, they had a whole LIST of things they fixed on this update. I HIGHLY recommend the zumo 665 now. VERY HIGHLY!! Wally

Whats in your tool bag?
rumboogy replied to Sandbagger's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I think he thought he said MOTORHOME. LOL -
OK...when stopped (stopped only)...and I have to feather the clutch, I hear a "CREAKING" sound coming from the clutch lever. I can also barely feel this creaking. Looking at it, I think I can see a rubber boot (maybe not)...so I am afraid to oil it until I hear from some of you. Any suggestions or comments on this... Wally

Did you do a master reset? Do you have the latest software?
-
Yes the XM radio, NavWeather and Traffic are all subscriptions. However, I could care less about the Traffic...the weather is VERY NICE to have. Something else that others considering this unit should know is that NOT ONLY is the XM radio included (the hockey puck)...but the Garmin zumo 665 package includes BOTH the bike cradle (with power cord) AND the Automotive mount. The zumo 665 is not for everyone...but I enjoy my music and I am a "gadget" guy, so it fits well for me. Again, the 665 does have a few software issues...but I am sure Garmin is addressing those and mostly they are just annoyances. Once they get those ironed out...The 665 will be the BEST MOTORCYCLE GPS on the market right now...with the zumo 550 being second.
-
Don...Yes, I think you can get that. I sold my 550 with the puck for $550 about a month ago. As long as it is in good shape...you should be able to anywhere from $475-550 bucks for it and it would be a fair deal for you AND the person buying the unit. Wally

Ooops...I forgot to come back to this post. Yes, I've had mine about 6 weeks now and just got off a 3200 mile ride using it. Right now I would give it a B+, but I rate it that LOW only because it is very BUGGY right now. Garmin is NOTED for releasing their products with limited features and LOTS of BUGS in their software. However, Garmin is also (history has shown) released firmware fixes and sometimes even feature enhancements. I have owned the 550, 660 and 665. The 550 was (and still IS) a great motorcycle GPS. The 660 was released and improved upon some of the shortcomings of the 550, but DID NOT include the XM radio service. When the 665 came out, I sold the 660 and got the 665. I think the 665 (with bugs and all) is the best one they have ever released. The weather package is a must if you do any long distance traveling and mine worked VERY WELL on this trip. The XM radio gives you unlimited and uninterrupted music for as long as you're riding. The navigation is where the problem lies right now. With some routes the unit will shut down, and sometimes when it loses satellite reception, it will shut down. Mine shut down maybe 6 times over 3200 miles, but I just turned it back on and it would pick up right where it left off. GARMIN WILL FIX THIS SOON!! Would I buy this high priced "TOOL" again...you BETCHA!! When they get the firmware updated to fix the crashes...this little gem will get an A+ from me!!! And while there are just a couple of LITTLE things I would change on the 665, I would still give it the A+.

I just got back tonight after a 6 day 3260 mile ride to see the Grand Canyon and do a little Route 66 riding. As most of you probably already know...it has been HOT. Most days the temps on the trip were near 100 degrees or HIGHER. On Tuesday in Tucumcari...the temperature in the SHADE was 110 degrees. The day before we left Flagstaff at 6am and the temp was 38 degrees...by 1pm that afternoon we were in Needles, CA with the temp at 108 degrees. I got heat exhaustion twice...one time was pretty scary for me. Proper hydration is the key (and common sense)...I just assumed the hydration was for everyone but me. OK...enough about me. The bike performed flawlessly, had PLENTY of power for some of those mountainous climbs, and other than getting "squirelly" on some of the interstate roads in Oklahoma City (their ROADS SUCK!!!)...I was very happy with how the bike did. But I do have a complaint and also a question. The complaint (an age old complaint)...is the heat coming off the bike. To be honest I never really "noticed" until today and that's because after 3000 miles of wearing boots...I slipped on my dockers for the final 260 miles...and the heat was tremendous down there. But more than that, I also have a thermometer mounted near the turn signal switch and ALL DAY it read 110-120 degrees. No wonder I was getting heat exhaustion. Now the question...several times after riding for awhile when I was coming to a stop...the front would WOBBLE. When this happened the bike was barely moving...at highway speeds (and faster)...the bike was smooth as butter. So what could cause this VERY SLOW SPEED WOBBLE? OH...and the Flagstaff, AZ forest fires that are burning out of control...right behind (well a few miles)...our motel. THAT THING IS HUGE...smoke everywhere and we could see it from the Grand Canyon (80 miles away). Thanks. Wally

Just curious ... What is the biggest load anyone has put IN and ON their trunk (luggage rack). I am leaving tomorrow for a long trip (1 week to the Grand Canyon). I can put my ROLL BAG on the passenger seat (I'm riding solo), but the trunk is full too...Will I be OK. I am thinking maybe the roll bag is about 20 lbs and the trunk another 25-30lbs. Any experiences? Wally

Handling on my Venture
rumboogy replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK...I was just talking to a buddy of mine that also has a Venture (in fact, he has 2 Ventures, one is his, one is his wifes...both of them are 2009). This guy has rode a long time...and just about the time I think I have my handling issues worked he...he throws a WRENCH into it. Here are my present settings: Front Fork: 0 Rear Shock: 25 Front Tire: 40 Rear Tire: 42 And here are his settings on his BIKES: His Bike Her Bike (lowered) Front Fork: 10 10 Rear Shock: 50 80 Front Tire: 35 35 Rear Tire: 35 35 He says the dealer here fills all the tires with nitrogen and on hot days the tire temps are 15-20 degrees cooler with nitrogen than with air...and he prefers the tires to be hotter (air filled) so that they stick better. I know this HORSE IS BEAT TO DEATH...but what are some of your thoughts on those settings. Just trying to get informed. Wally -
Hey Wanderer... I like your bike.
-
I got these: http://www.tlcproducts.com/servlet/Categories?category=Yamaha%3AVenture Excellent service...I bought the complete set...but honestly since I customized the inside of my saddlebags...I don't use those. BUT, I use the Trunk Liner EVERYDAY and have used it on one trip...WAS WONDERFULLY convenient. Wally

Yep...it's about 94 degrees here...supposed to get up to 107 degrees heat index...just watching the race and enjoying the cool. Thanks Don. Wally

Plain as day. Thanks Don...I found it in the manual. I really oughta read the thing again since I know a little more about what it's talking about. Thanks, Wally
