  1. at last im almost to the point of letting the venture go. i just cant keep up with the work it needs? i dont have the skills to keep her going. and last PO just didnt take of her. she runs ok. but she needs TLC. i got to say she allways got me home. with cost of the bike and stuff i bought im into her for about 4 grand. im thinking of selling it and finding one that is in better shape maybe go to a 1989 or higher. this will not happen till around september though. as im looking at settling a long over due workers comp case. sometimes if ya dont feel safe you got to let her go:crying:
  2. wow sorry to hear that. now just for fun give the docotor some blue loctite. that will hold them screws or is it red loctite?
  3. wow what a PIA but we pulled the starter. checked the oil while on center stand. while starter was off we pulled the plugs. put her back down on the ground 2 friends gave him a push while plugs where out he dropped it in to 2nd gear and motor turned over thank god. so we drained the oil. yep sure enough it had gas in it? i would say that the oil catch pan we used holds 8 quarts. well it over filled while draining the oil. so we checked his gas tank and he was down past a half a tank he filled it up about 12 miles before he got to my place yikes!!!!!!! so i said lets try something we pulled the fuel line from the carbs i tould him turn the petcock to off or whatever shuts the fuel off. well no matter what position he placed it in fuel ran??? so off to the yamaha shop. got new fuel petcock. he had this worked on before. while there the service manager said hey wheres the screen on this petcock? we said have no clue? we emptied the tank shook the crap out of it and found no screen. he said hey we worked on that bike about 2 weeks ago. put the starter back on and leave the tank off. i will personaly come and get it. we here believe in our workmanship. he picked it up at 10 am called us at 2pm and said shes ready to roll. they put in a brand new fuel pet cock. and did some kind of work on the starter? something to do with a shim? put new battery cables on the bike. new plugs. we went to get it expecting a hell of a bill. total cost for repair was 5 bucks for plugs and 5 dollars shop cost. now thats a yamaha shop. its leopolds in ottawa illinois . they also said if he wants to do the engine swap. they will do it for around 300 bucks and that includes putting the good parts from one engine to another? i then asked them if they would work on a old venture from 1984 they said sure. we do tires oil changes and we will sync carbs but hourly cost is high. and we will bleed your brakes if you cant get it done yourself. he then said was that the venture sitting next to the virago i said yep. he said fix it. i have 2 of them . 1985 and 1988 so i said hey check out this place. we are a great family here and he said consider it done. so i hope he at least checks us out.
  4. i live in peru illinois and thinking of going not sure yet. but its almost in the cards? im takeing my cage as im just not safe with the venture yet? if i get the go ahead i will give a shout as we can load stuff in trunk of my car and ill follow ya all there???
  5. yep its past the half way mark on the site glass while its on its side stand? tomorrow we will put it on its center stand and drain the oil. and check it out. he just had the oil changed at a dealer ship not more then 245 miles on the fresh oil? he did have the petcock worked on also? he said that last year the carbs where worked on as they dripped gas? just another dumb ? could he have a bent fork shift in side? its in first gear and we when rock it like i was saying. we cant get it past 2nd gear? he had a new clutch cable put on when they did the oil change as old one was fraying? and just by luck he has a parts bike with a fair engine in it. but was wondering how to put it in and not have problems with the DMV on getting it registerd if he should have to drop that engine in.
  6. hello every one a friend of mine rode down to see me about 2 hours ago. well he went out side to start his bike and it just went whirl klunk klunk . now it wont turn over? we checked oil. its full. we cant push start it it acts like the motor is locked. going forward in gear. but we can push it backwards some and then the motor turns? push it forward again and it turns then stops? im thinking a stuck starter? as when he came here the bike was running great. 1984 1100 virago i think? he just went home about a half hour ago. and i coverd the bike up and let him take the maxim i got home. im seroiusly thinking about takeing some kind of motorcyle repair course. saw one on line but wonder if its a scam? any way thanks out there if any one can give us a clue as to what to look for.
  7. if thats ugly i dont want to say what mine looks like. faded not sure what the color realy is. buying parts here and there and soon will look like the partridge bus LOL lets see maroon to start with then redish false tank. decals on the saddle bags look pink. i just say its salmon color maroon ,brown ,gold, black, gray side covers. maroon brownish fairing with the pink looking decals. and of course after last nights down pour shes somewhat clean. and now shes coverd as where in for more rain.

    why me

got home about a hour ago went out to cover the venture before it rains. and darn it i left the cover at a friends house. just how much rain can a old 84 venture stand? its pouring out there so hard i cant see across the street. bike is parked between 2 cars. but it looks like a poor duck out there. it needs to be washed but gee not that bad. so has anyone else been stuck in this type situation? radio tape player should be ok i hope?
  13. ok im not trying to be funny but is the kill switch off? others will join in here and help im sure.

    brakes?

yep rear is full. but im going give it a shot. i adjusted the linkage and got the pedel up higher. it brakes some now. still flashing the warning light but i can slow the bike down now. when i can afford it and i can find someone to help im thinking of going the delink way. i like the thought of going back the old way when you used the front and rear brake. but then there is also the advantage with the linked system. as it uses both front and rear. and if the bike dont idle right you can just hold the rear brake and work the throtle. its looking more and more. like oldgoat is going to buy a differnt scoot sometime in december. i got a lookout for one a guy is giving up riding after this season. its a 1990 venture with 40,000 on the clock. looks good runs great. so there might be 2 in the stable. then i will do a complete tear down on the 84. remove the fairing send it out for paint ect ect i got to much time and ok maybe a little love in her to let her go.
  15. prayers on the way

    brakes?

went for a 100 mile ride bike running fair. then it happend the brake light started flashing. i pushed on the rear brake and nothing!!! holly crap. not good at 60 mph and going upon a tractor. i managed to gear her down tractor went into his field. i slowed the bike down and got a little rear brakeing. front one grabs just like it should. i forgot we removed the rear caliber. to unstick it. so there has got to be air in there? from i read on here this is not a fun thing to do. im scared to try it myself. no brakes is not something i want to tackle. so im betting a dealer is going to screw me over but? when your not sure about your skills better to suck it up i guess. but let me tell ya the bike was doing good. also maybe my riding skills but for some reason the bike kind of drifts or wobbles in a curve. 50pmh curve i was doing about 55 and it did a little shake i backed off gave more body lean and came out of the curve straightend it out and it did it just a little. maybe new tires not wore in yet? its looking more and more like trailering it to freebirds maintenance day/ if i can find a truck trailer and someone to haul it there.?
  17. you know i tried to invent teflon toliet paper but sh** wouldnt stick to it
  18. thats what he said for me to do. and it works too. my speedo is off by 5 mph dont ask me how i know this. something about blue lights flashing but a nice female officer said keep it down old man? gee i was only doing what i thought was 30mph im first gear. so ok its 35 mph. i wasent hurting no one. just some ducks walking down to the river. also saw what i thought was a piece of rope imagine my surprise when it moved.. old goat who says becarefull what ya try to pick up it just might bite ya.

    brakes?

right on dingy i think something is lose in there as i can wiggle the wire to front master and it goes off and on or flashes. poor bike realy needs a lot of things tighten up also found about a half gallon of the foulest smelling brown water in the trunk. and this sat at a shop for 4 months before i had to get it and do the work myself . lets just say a leaky roof in his shop maybe? or parked out side during the winter? you know for $12 bucks this is the best place i found that even a guy with some mechanical skills can learn.

    brakes?

well finished what me and a friend could do on the bike where not the greatest mechanics in the world. but here is what we finaly got done after dealing witha shady mechanic from before 1 we got the tires mounted new dunlops same as origional 2 rotors from pinwall installed all 3 of them. and let me say what a great place to get parts. 3 fresh new plugs and cleaned the caps 4 fresh oil 5 brand new brake pads ok now heres the problem the dash shows the brakes fluid thing its on all the time not flashing just on?? brakes are great so not sure what we done wrong? also still a little poping and rough idle i need to get these carbs sync. all in all she running good not great but good. but like willie says on the road again. now to install the radio. old one works but missing buttons and that great cassette gave up the ghost got one of them too. then install the false tank. old one needs some repairs to the fuel door and the tab that holds it. need to fix that but got a replacement not same color. but going to fix the old one as it has a mural that a friend did before he passed away. but i can say im on the road with the venture. and with time and good friends here i will get it right.

hey i was up in the dixon amboy area sunday. i was on the maxim. i pulled into a parking lot where the roof had hawkings or something like that on it. when a verry nice looking red and i think silver? second gen yamaha went by? gave one hell of a honk sounded like a air horn. then waved and went on its way. just wondering if it was you?. this was around 1:30? and i must say there sure is some nice country in that area. then i headed back home around 2:30 back through mendota and home. nice ride. for a lazy sunday. i hope by friday i can do it on the venture. shes almost done.
