Chaharly replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
I'm sorry for everyone's tough time with the big C and @cowpuc I'm sorry for all the losses this last month. One thing to be grateful for is that you've been busy with that wedding. Not huge on words, especially with serious situations like what you gentlemen are in. All I can say is that you all are in my thoughts and prayers! Take care guys! -
Be sure that you do hang around! You dont need a Venture to be a VentureRider!

Hey guys! I think I'd like to order a plug patch kit. I found this one for 50 bucks that seems nice. Comes with a compressor and all the tools. https://www.amazon.com/Stop-Go-6000-Tubeless-Puncture/dp/B0068FX3VO/ref=as_li_ss_il?creativeASIN=B0068FX3VO&imprToken=A.6rbZtVYOHRNXnr4Frxmw&slotNum=3&ie=UTF8&qid=1487833334&sr=8-1&keywords=Stop+&+Go+6000+Tubeless&linkCode=w61&tag=researchcore8-20&linkId=79405188df5f51964b580f444f4dc7e9 What do you guys bring with you on the road?

The Hondapotomus is on the way to Maintenance Day

That's a sharp Wing! Safe travels bud! -
Saw what I believe to be an 87 Standard. It was the two tone blue, but not the same as the 90s Royales. It was definitely more like the blue 83 and 84s. I know also its a pre 88 because its a standard. She was in pretty rough shape, had a hole in just about every plastic including the reflectors. A damn shame with a rare one like that

Man that valley in Utah is exactly my type of camping! So neat and sky for miles! I think I'm getting strange in my old age though. These fertile nebraska valleys get prettier and prettier to me every year. Thats okay though, these are positive side effects to aging unlike the 50 foot mis measurements I have to say though puc, in your videos you ask Tip what the date is... GOOD ON YOU BROTHER! Man I would love to be able to have the kind of time to get truly lost like that! Honest to God true CTFW right there. Leaving a town in Colorado, low 30s. My bike puked and puked and puked out antifreeze but It fixed itself. All new O-rings and thermostat housing and it hasn't done that. If it gets real cold like that I'm gonna really be digging these new heated grips. Oh you guys are soooo funny. Yeah no wonder no one knows what those mountains are made out of ha ha ha In the last post you've showed me that video before. I explained to my parents how I'd camp cowpuc style and would be willing to take a gravel road up to a radio tower to have a free campground. I think my parents think you're crazy though bud... Showing off those muscles might as well call ya a musclehead. Thanks for more of those vids. Got to CTFW today to my brother in law's fathers funeral. What an amazing, touching service it was. He was in AA for 25 years and has helped hundreds of people through rough times. So many people went up to speak about how he's helped save them and how great of a guy he was. I mean its pretty incredible when the service ends with Bob Marley's "Every Little Thing is Gonna be Alright" and the entire place clapping. He had a love of restoring cars and he owned a 99 Indian that my brother in law is going to start riding and man what a beautiful bike it is. His nickname was "Grandpa Goofy" and on his tank on the indian logo is goofy painted hanging onto the "I" Sorry to change the subject like that, but the man lived every minute of his life and now I'm sitting here burning with an intense desire to ride! Take care guys!

Well wouldn't all those babes have Carl's number by now?! Okay cool! We took a trip into Ohio one time and yeah, the traffic (in areas) could be super unforgivable. If I had enough time I wouldn't stop CTFW and hit the whole country... hell the whole continent

Just the backdrop of the mountains in the first video has my mouth ABSOLUTELY salivating for a ride! Now see, I've seen your Ten Sleep video before of the Flaming Gorge and actually was planning on making the big horn mountains on the first night. I never heard of the flaming gorge until I saw your vids. I plan on spending the morning taking in the gorgeous views. And those shots of the two track leading into that big valley in Utah are STUNNING. Now see I gotta ask. I remember you saying in previous posts that when camping in bear country, you park the bike a good bit away from your tent and leave any stinky food in Tweaks so she can fend the bears off for herself. In that first video she's sitting pretty close to tha tent! I remember your videos of ghost towning too. To me that would be the ultimate camping experience. Nothing but the sound of the breeze and coyotes in the distance, and like you said, you can feel the history still pulsing through the ground. People back then were remarkable. Heading out into the unknown like that. Especially when they never had Weather Apps and could only travel what 15 to 30 miles a day max? So basically, what you guys have helped me decide is to take my itinerary with a grain of salt. Like @bongobobny said, there is beauty all over this great country, regardless of the politics behind them! Well now I'm DEFINITELY in the CTFW mood and I might have to start putting the tool sets together to get the bike ready a month early! Thanks for the well wishes Puc, Tip, and Tweaks and I'm sending positive vibes right back atcha!

You hold public office now? Not my friend anymore then Hahaha just kidding Congratulations that's great!

Its always sad to see you guys go!

Oh yeah, I could definitely do Colorado again. and again. and again. and again lol Are the first two weeks in July going to be too hot to do the Grand Canyon? See @WRIDR and me are thinking the same page. North is going to be a bad direction this year, unless they get some crazy heat within the next month. You guys know what they say though, the best laid plans are the ones destined to fail! @Steven_G and @RDawson . I'm probably going to do like you guys do. Check the weather, grab the Michelin Road map and hit the road! When I went to California I only had nine days, so If I were to get caught In weather on that trip I would have had to have just sucked it up. However, since I've got 18 days, I might just ride around the weather and see where the road takes me. We just came back from a cager camping trip in Eminence, Missouri and really I could ride those nicely paved county roads every day. Really beautiful country out there. @slowrollwv whats the traffic situation out that way? When I picture going east I picture tons and tons of people and its kind of a turn off for me! I'd love to get to Vogel but that's a month late

In Nebraska you need a helmet, and my folks always had to wear their's in the slingshot. Maybe they just didn't give a rats behind lol

One thing I noticed when riding through the black hills is that they collect a bunch of the fallen debris from the trees and then put them in huge piles throughout the forest. Sort of like in this page here https://www.kotatv.com/content/news/Burn-permits-open-in-the-Black-Hills--407349905.html That's all fine and dandy, but the week I was out there they just stayed put. No one was burning them, they just sat there. Hell even the shape of them seems to be designed to START forest fires and not prevent them.

Hey guys, planning that trip on July 1st through the 18th up through yellowstone and into glacier. Being that its been such a cool, wet year, I'm starting to doubt that its going to be the friendliest motorcycling territory that early in the year. I've been thinking about quitting my job next summer and riding north into the Canadian Rockies and spend some months riding up there. That leaves me a few decisions for this year. I could go through yellowstone and continue to shoot west and get into Washington, Oregon, and hit the west coast. OR I could head south I havent seen the Grand Canyon yet and the only desert I've ridden through is I-80 and Highway 50 through Nevada. Of course I could always go east or southeast. Head into the Ozarks and maybe even get the tail of the dragon involved. So I guess I'm asking for some advice. Where the heck should I go?!?!

I learned how to balance tires from @cowpuc s videos after attempting dynabeads with poor results. Now that i balanced my tires myself i have no road vibration at all

Considering trading my '83 in on an '89 Pros and Cons?
Chaharly replied to luvmy40's topic in Watering Hole
Right with ya there about runnin them in each gear at the same time just to see what the difference truly is! But youve really got me craving those South Dakota prairies! The 26th can't come soon enough. Its real easy to change the back wheel with the bags on. Put the bike on the center stand and use a ratchet strap to fasten it forward to the crash bar. Make sure youre on fairly solid ground. Remove front brake calipers and front axle nut. This next part helps to have someone slide something under the motor when you remove the axle bolt and wheel but if youre quick you can do it by yourself by holding it up with your shoulder. Then very gently set the bike on the front forks, preferably with something soft in between them, remove the left muffler and viola! Easy peasy everything is right there way up in the air to work with! -
Cruise Control

My clutch lever was actually wore out. The little ball in it was very visibly worn. I think I have a picture -
With the bike running check the voltage drop from the 5 wire (4 wire plug on some bikes) to the battery. There are 2 black and to red wires and probably one brown wire coming out of this plug. Set your multimeter to the 20V DC setting and insert one probe into the plug on one of the red wires. Then put the other probe on the positive lead to the battery. If you've got anything like .5 v showing up then you're losing a half a volt in just that one wire. Repeat this process with the other red wire, and then do the same with the black wire, but to the ground post instead. Same thing, you're looking for a voltage drop. I would say like .1 to .2 volts is acceptable. This will at least eliminate the harness and connections to the battery being the problem. I would definitely do this before buying a regulator.

That is a neat looking critter! I bet he musta been lovin the warm road. Nice to see you had the MK2 out! I've been thinking about trying to relocate to AZ so I could ride all year. Take care bud!

Oh and @cowpuc. I would LOVE to run the 83 and 88 balls to the wall, side by side for awhile! -

You'd be surprised at how easy changing the rear tire on a MK2 is. Don't need to remove the bags or anything. I was gonna tell ya LUV that the pictures on the CL post are 2 different bikes. Notice the paint scheme is different. IMHO I think you're going to love the Radio, and especially the Cruise Control. I think the seats on the MK1s are more comfortable, but I've put tons of miles on the stock seat on my MK2. Its nice to have basically the same motor as the RSV so you know there will be parts for years to come. Really, really look the bike over, but I tell ya what I certainly don't miss my 83 Standard with nothing on it. I'd take my 88 Royale any day of the week. (PS We'd have twin bikes. Same color!) -
Thats great! I cant get over the windshield bag stuffed full of carrots!

Anybody else get any 2 on 1 action today????

Hit the old 88 Venture with the wide open throttle a few times, climbed some hills and pushed a heavy wind.... Still got 40.1 mpg
