Stupid Gas Gauge
Chaharly replied to SpencerPJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
200 miles on certain days and you'll be pushing the bike! aim for 150 to be safe, though I agree... if the bike came with the fuel gauge then theres no reason not to fix it -

In my few Sturgis experiences, people tend to wave at the goldwingers and ventures. They know we're not out causing riff rafff lol -
Will these spark plug caps work?

Well I decided with 30 year old wires, i'll just replace the wires with new copper core wires. Might go the NGK route, but I'll take a look see at yer link ya posted! I'm not having any issues with mis-firing or anything. Just a piece of mind thing! Ive never heard of snipping wires at a tune up? -

I saw those on ebay awhile back and didn't jump on them. But I bet if I emailed NGK they could get something set up -

I didn't realise the shipping was so outrageous. I saw brother @cowpuc 's YouTube video and he was only using 5kohm boots. Not sure what to order now lol -

A few weeks ago I pulled up to work and saw a real Sharp 1200 suzuki bandit sitting outside. I was on the 919 hornet so of course I was admiring this bike. I always go home at lunch and while I was on my way back to work and I see the bandit and it's owner sitting on the gravel road just north of our work. You could just tell the kid looked confused. I was kind of watching him in my rear view and decided to turn around to see if he needed help. As I got turned around the kid revved that bandit up, dumped the clutch spun it around on the gravel and promptly dumped the bike. I pulled up and helped him stand it up and said "first bike huh" which he replied a weak "yeah". Well when he dumped it he busted off the left rear view and the clutch lever but luckily someone with a vice grip saw it. I told him that bike is probably too big to learn on (both on CCs and in seat height. I rode it back to work for him and the whole bike had a shimmy, like bad, coming from the front. He wad riding it on a flat front tire. I get to the parking lot and reach for the front brake... nothing... no lever... I get off and tell him he broke his front brake off too. He said he bought it that way. I told that kid get air in the tire and to get a fricken front brake. Told him he had no business riding that bike with only a quartet of the braking power. Turns out that's how he ended up on the gravel was he rodded up that road and couldn't stop so he ended up on gravel. Told my buddy that dude doesn't have the mentality to be on a bike. Told him that kid was gonna die on that bike. He told me I was over exaggerating (same buddy that dumped my Bike, this was before that though). A couple days later I overheard him talking about ordering something from Partzilla and I saw him buzzing around town a few times as well. I chose not to ride with him as I didn't want to be a contributing factor to him killing himself. Finally Wednesday before our Colorado trip I did some overtime at the plant and saw his bike there. Kinda looked as I rode past... STILL NO FRONT BRAKE!!! Unfortunately that first night on our trip I got a Snapchat of a ball of fire on main street. Buddy said a biker was hauling ass through town and smoked an SUV. Hit it hard enough to turn it around 180degrees. The city blocks in Wayne are only 300ft and they were estimating that he was nearly doing 100mph... with no front brake. He succumbed to his injuries that night. There's still a mass of burnt plastic and chopped up pavement where it happened. You can tell he tried to swerve left to avoid it but the SUV kept coming. He was a good kid and I wish I would have done more to get him off that bike... -
Awesome man!

To test ride the new Venture Transcontinental! Emailed my local dealership through the Yamaha site and they said it'll be ready when I am. I've talked to Jeff the owner recently and he said he has to pay a certain amount once the bike hits 50 miles. I wonder if they've made it into a demo bike, or if it truly has under 50 miles. If its a bike that's gonna be sold full price to someone, then I'm going to baby it and just try to review it as a touring motorcycle. If its a demo bike... well I'm gonna give her the onions... I'll give a write up when its done!

Lemme know how well the V-4 pulls that trike!

Could you meet me tomorrow? I'm going through Omaha and may be able to see what's up with it

@cowpuc has got a video on here somewhere of him rodding around on his V-Max. I need to turn that sound into an alarm clock!

Have you ridden a venture before?? Just remember it isn't your Daddy's Harley! Let that puppy wind up in those RPM's. Honestly if I was you take it out and hit the rev limiter in first gear to see exactly what I mean. Then do the same thing at Wide Open Throttle!!! Enjoy the bike! What a gorgeous color!!!

Got you guys in our thoughts! -
I only saw one new goldwing out there and no SVTC or eluders

Forks not forms
-
How did you take it off? If you take the front wheel off and set it on the forms it hikes that rear wheel way in the air for ya
-
whatever gets people on bikes!
-
I wave at every biker from moped to trikes. I wave at most people in cars, and most people in general. I'd say 90 percent or more of bikers waved at us in colorado

Just a few pictures from my trip, I'll post a couple of YouTube vids as well that come from Snapchat. We had an awesome time, left Thursday and were home by 1 Tuesday. Had an absolutely awesome ride with my dad. We always get along real well and have a pretty similar riding style. That is of course if I don't go chase some sport tourers doing 70 around some of those 35mph curves! That he was pretty upset about, but I gotta show them boys up in the mountains that just because I'm on an old touring bike doesn't mean its a lug. I mean its a first gen Venture for God sake! We stayed in Ft. Collins the first night and went up and around the dam since we didn't really go off a map I cant exactly remember all of the roads that we went on but we went over the pass at the Rocky Mountain National Park and got a few good shots of some elk. I've been over this pass before and lost my hat, but It didn't happen this time! We stayed in Breckenridge the second night and had a beautiful view of the snow covered mountains from the hotel. We ate at Moes Original BBq. They real excellent ribs. I have to say my favorite mountain highway that we road through was Colorado 133. We got on highway 82 from Glenwood Springs (I-70 is an amazing ride through there as well, at least for interstate. Just stay out during Memorial Day Weekend) and head east until you get to 133. Once your cross the summit at I think 10,500ft you cross over to what looks like an entirely different planet. I've never come over so many hills saying WOW in my life. From there we got down into the desert side of things where the temps went in the high 70s in the mountains to nearly 100 in Hotchkiss. While your on that highway 133 head east over to Marble. its a beautiful county road that leads to this really neat little town down in the mountains where they have a super sick bbq and bar. It was 3 in the afternoon so it was too late for lunch and too early for beer for us, so we did a U-Turn and headed back to 133. All of that state is amazing to ride through including the desert side. We stayed in Ouray, which is the start of the Million Dollar Highway, which is no doubt beautiful, but IMHO definitely over-rated. We took US160 east to Pegosa Springs and went up the Wolf Creek Pass WAY ON UP the Great Divide, trucking on dooooowwwn the other siiide! Wow that was a blast! We went through a fertile basin between Alamosa and Villa Grove where they grow potatoes and alfalfa, but due to the drought they haven't even planted half the fields. A lot of the streams were dry as well.. If Colorado doesn't get a bunch of snow next year the Farmers and Ranchers are gonna be in trouble!! The last super memorable road that we went on was County Road 62 from Grant Colorado to Georgetown on I 70. It takes you over the Guanella Pass which just so happens to be at 11,669Ft That was one of the most amazing roads that I've been on and when the 10mph switch backs say 10mph.. THEY MEAN IT! I wouldn't want to be on any other bike than my first gen! I got mileage anywhere from 30.8mpg, running 70 against a Nebraska headwind up to 45 cruising through the mountains, and my dad on my brother's 89 GL1500 with 93,000 miles got 28.5 on that same stretch I got 30.8 and he got over 50 in the mountains!!! They knew what they were doing when they made these bikes! I love my first gen because it really eats those corners well. There were a lot of times on those switchbacks that I would lose dad while just cruising, and I have to think its because of the overall length of the Goldwing. I was racing with the sports bikes and keeping my own as well as impressing a few of them. Then to top it all off when we were riding back the last 2 days we got rained on and I could sit comfortably in the rain and literally the only thing wet on either of us was our 3/4 shell helmets and our shoes. (My shoes AND socks). We had the CB intercom in use whenever we wore helmets (when Nebraska forced us, or when going through labor day traffic in Denver which is not a bad time to wear a helmet IMHO). I had my phone hooked up to the bike and had my GPS music and podcasts the whole time and the best thing was these old carbureted bikes ran better than the new carbed adventure bikes up at altitude. NOW THAT BEING SAID the altitude certainly had an effect on our machine's performance, Idle was down and the bikes were pigging out on all the rich gas, but to pull 45 and him to pull 50 while not running at peak performance says something about these two bikes as touring machines.
