Installing progressives
mmaleney replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On my 84 I had a short pvs spacer and that worked good, on my 88 it worked better with no spacer, When you test ride the bike with the new springs see if the front end rides high or if the bike is harder to turn on a section of road that you know well, also check you have full travel on the forks under braking do this with a zip tie, if not you may have to change youre spacer.- 8 replies

cold starting
mmaleney replied to barend's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You may want to take the battery to a repair shop and have it checked for amp output, some times a battery can read good volts but still be shot, how old is the battery ?. Also you may want to check the starter switch, kill switch, and starter solenoid, You maybe also want to jump the solenoid just to see if that makes any difference or try one from a different bike. The switch to a v max starter will help in hot weather not so much in the cold. -

mmaleney replied to bilko1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yo may drop down to mid 30's on the MPG, the bike will feel like it's in 4th gear on the highway, but lots of power everywhere -
So there I was geting rid of the YICS on my 83 and then I started to think, could the lines be hooked back up together in the same way as the Jason mode or along with the jason mode to help the low end power in any way ?

Help me with middle gear back lash
mmaleney replied to mmaleney's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well the good news is I got it to hold the same back lash all 4 times so lets call it done, Now on to the valves. -
So to make a long story short I am instaling a different middle gear in my 88 venture, so I wanted to know when the back lash is to be checked in 4 different places should I have the very same back lash # in all 4 places or can I be any where from the min to the max setting as given in the book, because it looks like there can be 2 shimes on one side and 1 on the other, And if I was to use that blue dye to check my work would that work on the way the venture is set up Thanks.

broken rings or chiped valve?
mmaleney replied to mmaleney's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks guys I may rent a leak down tester and see how long it will hold. That motor for $100 sounds good Will be in touch skydoc thanks again will let you know what I find. -
So I picked up a 87 venture but turns out it has 40 lbs when hot in one cylinder, front right, put oil in spark plug hole and on re test reading went up to 60 lbs , the other three are good, yesterday I pulled the motor, put some oil down the spark plug hole and with the comp tester on hand turned the motor and the oil pushed out a valve on the exhaust side, so what do you thing ? chiped valve ? bent valve, bad rings ? I did not test any other cylinder with the oil I do have clearance between camshaft and shim. thanks Mike.

mmaleney replied to zagger's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Did you get it to rev out good with no air box and did you have to change the jetting much. I am working on a chopper trike and I to would like to get rid of the air box. -
I picked up an 83 venture needing lots of work, I put 87 carbs on so do I have to change the 83 CDI to a newer type work with the 87 carbs, 83 carbs are junk, bike is not on the road as yet, thanks.
