Gen 1 Cam Timing
mmaleney replied to VentureYZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Can you tell us a bit more about what you are doing, what year what changes you made to the bike what pipes ect. I to have a project I spent all summer geting the carbs to run right so I may be able to help you -
Hi all. Well after years of turning one of my ventures in to chopper trike I am very happy with the outcome, few things still to be worked out and one of them is the carbs, The combo I have is a 83 motor with 87 stock carbs, stock air box and filter with Harley stock pipes I am very lean on the air fuel ratio all carbs read the same , two turns out on the pilot resulted in a white spark plug poor mid range, poor top end, and with 100 miles of test driving I am now at four turns on the pilot from full in, all spark plugs now reads gray in colour, on the road trike rides with OK mid range and poor top end power/ pulling power. So from here I'm thinking just go up one on the main jet, or should I go with 83 jets and needles to better suit the 83 motor, on ebay there is a jet kit for the 1200 and a kit tor the 1300 motor, not sure if I want or need to go that far as I don't know which kit to go with the 12 or the 13. Any one who has been down the road on this one I would love to have some input, thanks

I was geting ready to swap out the final drive on my 88 with a drive from a 2nd gen when I noticed that I could move the pinion from side to side with just my hand. Is there a way to take up the slop in the pinion or will the unit have to be taken apart and reshimed. Sure dont want to do all that work still have the noise still. Thanks.

Floor Boards - Where or How?
mmaleney replied to thirdbike's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have a set on my 88 that i may take off next month as I have to do a lot of repair to that bike and not sure I will put them back on as I dont care for that system, pegs feel much better. I also have a set from an 83 that look the same as the set from the 88 but are in bad shape and not sure if I have every single part for that set, and I have a made up set from an 87 which will fit but are to wide and put the riders feet out to far when holding the bike up. Would be happy to send you a picture of what I have and if you can wait a month like I say am sure I will have a set up for sale. Mike -

88 venture carb sync question
mmaleney replied to masterofyard's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You are right Dingy but the owner does not know much about working on the the bike so without going into switching ports i think it's best to get the motor runing and try to find out whats wrong with the motor, why two sets of carbs cant get the thing to work right -

mmaleney replied to masterofyard's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can not get the 83 carbs to work right on the 88 tci, best you can do is let the bike idle 900 to 1200 rpm and try to find out what it is about the motor you are not seeing -
lowering rear

What I did for one of my ventures was remove all the foam and start again withh just the seat itself. Pick up a 6' by 2' half inch foam from sporting goods store, glue and staple one piece of foam over seat let dry, glue the next half foam on the first, pull the two together, let dry then trim off foam to edge of seat, then finish it off with black sheep skin from IKEA. It's no where near as soft as the stock seat but OK for about an hour or so, you will want to keep the seat you have now and just use the made up one for short runs. -
88 venture carb sync question

Did you check for spark, do not hook the vac tube going to #2 carb, just plug the nipple on the carb for now, It's strange the motor is doing the very same thing with different carbs, when it fire's are the same exhaust pipes hot as with the 88 carbs, tell us the colour of the old spark plug's black, white, tan or are they wet, check for water in the engine oil, try to keep the motor runing on a small amount of easy start or a DROP or two of gas down the carbs. -
88 venture carb sync question
mmaleney replied to masterofyard's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The bike will run on the 84rs, fire the motor up, let run on choke/no choke whatever, get the motor hot, check for spark on all 4 plugs, run it for as long as it takes for the fan to kick in, at this stage youre 88 carbs should run on the hot motor, from there check the motor is runing on all 4, if not try this, pull the plug from whatever is not fireing, let the plug wire hang a bit away from the plug, you will hear it spark , this will increase the spark and help that carb to start working , if it fires after a while or even starts to pop that will tell you that all is not as clean as it should be, if you can get to fire on all 4 you MAY be able to balance the carbs at that stage, if you can this will help you a lot as the motor may clean up and run fine, or the carbs may have to be done over again, let us know. -

Thing is there is no new carbs only used carbs and the new ones you get may have been siting on shelf for a year or so I know because I have three sets sitting on my shelf all needing work and new parts , you may be better off working with what you have or finding someone who has can clean carbs with an ultra sonic system, the cost should be round $200 -
I went back and looked at some of the old post on the subject of COP's,and looks like Dingy you had some input on the vmax site as well as here also. As for me well looks like I'll just have to find a place somewhere to mount stock coils, do not want to blow a cdi or get stuck on a back road somewhere, Who would think something so simple as wiring in a set of coils would turn out to need six months of research to get it right.
-
Thanks to all for the info,I only have about one hour in the CDI with the COP set up and all of that was in the shop as I am still in the building stage so hope i did'nt mess things up. Anyone know the v max guy or how much he charges for his kit ?

I have coils from year 83 87 and 88 would be glad to send you a one or two and in return am hoping you can help me. Am turning my 87 in to a chopper trike and have no good place to mount stock coils so I got some coil on plug type and they work fine I think, thing is am not sure if I can run them as they may damage the CDI over time. Let me know what you think or if you need a coil.
