  1. Mine is the Zumo 550 as well. I use a cheap cassette adapter to run it through the system. I just can't hear the voice commands with the radio on but it's all there with the cassette adapter in place and the MP3 player going. I haven't sprung for the XM antenna yet but that's next. It's supposed to be weter resistant to 3 ft of water for 30 minutes but I wouldn't try that. I have been in some pretty substancial downours though and no issues at all. All considered I love and considerir well worth the investment. Garmin customer support is secojnd to non as well.
  2. The garmon Zumo does a great job even in direct sun. That's what I have and I'm very pleased.
  3. Just to add, the fitment chart on the Metzler site listed tire pressure of 38 front and 46 rear for the old 50 max psi tires. That's for the 1st Gen size. That's what I always ran within a couple pounds.
  4. I have been running ME880s for 2 years and no problems at all. Has anyone with a 1st Gen had an issue? It seems like it's in the wider RSV tires. The new rear I just put on is an updated tire that is sized with letters and not numbers. The 140/90 that I was running before had a max of 50psi and I ran it at 48. The new one has a max of 40psi and I'm running 38. I keep hearing all this bad but I've had great service fom all my tires.
  5. Sounds like a job for Yamaha. Now I know what I want. I touring V-Max. (Sounds like a 1st Gen ) Seriously though I would love to see Yamaha make a NEW bike. The Victory Vision as an example. Not the bike but the fact that they made a new bike not just a copy. I echo what's been said about that. Not just an update.
  6. So when did you say you were visiting GA?? I'll start saving my money.
  7. You must have some stories. :rotf: I work for an airline and sometimes I catch myself just starring at people in disbelief.
  8. But I want all the toys too!! I know, hard to please.
  9. Has anyone ever seen the report on that guy who made salt water burn with radio waves? I'm not an engineer but you would think someone could come up with a way to use a radio transmitter in place of a spark plug and we could use salt water in place of gas. I know it's way more complicated than that but is seems like something like that would be possible. I wonder what happened to that guy and the technology.
  10. I don't know if it's doable with a cruiser frame but a little better cornering ability would be great. The main reason I have the 1st Gen is the performance. I like the twisties and I really hate to scrape floor boards when I don't feel like I'm even going yet. Iwould love a bike that would have the look of a real bike but would smoke a wing on the Dragon. I would like a touring bike that peforms like a sport bike but I don't want to buy a BMW.
  11. Thanks again all. Great to hear from across the pond Greg. Cheers.
  12. I'm kind of curious about the delaminating issue. Every post I've seen here deals with a 2nd Gen. There is a pretty big difference in tires between a 1st and 2nd. I did a little searching and found this HD forum with pictures from 3/07. This looks like a very different tire than I have used for the last 2 years. I wasn't aware of a WW and the tread pattern doesn't look like mine either. I wonder if this could be an old tire. The shop I go to has always made a point of not trying to compete with lot sales. They are all bikers and they keep very few tires in stock. They have a regular clientel that calls ahead and they have the tire the next day. They will only deal in new tires and refuse "deals". That's how I found out about the changes to the tire. I even caled a couple other shops and they used the 140/90 while my shop told me Metzler had update the tire and these were the new composits. It does make you wonder whether age or lots coul;d have something to do with the problems. http://www.hdforums.com/archive/threads/metzler-me880.have-a-look-1441481-1.html
  13. I don't generally talk up products but I have to say something about the new ME880 Marathons. I've been running the ME880s for a couple years and though I've heard of a couple problems I've never had any. I've been averaging 20k out of the rear and I got 50k out of my first front. I was always pretty pleased with the handling and felt they were great touring tires. Last week I replaced the rear and found out they had changed the tires a little. The shop I use told me the new ME880s changed the way they size them (they were 140/90). Now they use an alphabetical system. I was also told they changed the compound some in an effort to increase both mileage and handling. Over the past week I decided to put that to the test. The max PSI on the old rear was 50psi. The new ones dropped to 40PSI so they're already a little softer in the ride but I have to admit I was surprised at the handling. I've put her through some tight high speed turns where I threw some good sparks and I have never felt so confident on a touring tire. They really felt more like sport tires. Yesterday we had some pretty good rain here and I had a chance to check the wet pavement performance. Same results. Very solid. It will be a couple months before I have any real idea about the mileage but the performance is the best I've ever experienced in a touring tire. If they wear well and the delamination issue has been corrected they have a real winner here.
  14. I don't know if there are better out there but these are the ones I have and I've been pretty pleased. Easy installation and they had a drop cord for the 1st Gen. No complaints at all. http://www.jmcorp.com/SeeProducts.asp?PF=08
  15. I only have liability but I pay $135/year with Progressive. It's the best price I got here in Atlanta.
  16. Glad you're ok Alan I hate following trucks. I've had that sort of thing happen too many times.
  17. Thanks Squeez. Now I don't have to buy anything. (at least this time)
  18. Quick question..... Is there a difference between the front and rear brake pads on a 1st Gen? I have one set of pads and the 2 front look fine but the rear looks like it's getting a little close. I was going to change them this week but I don't want to do something stupid. (like I usually do.) I don't know which these are if there is a difference.
  19. Glad you're ok Daryl. The bike can be fixed.

    Car Tire ??

I know this discussion doesn't include us 1st Geners but I have always had a belief that if there's anywhere you DON'T cut corners it's on your tires. I ride hard and at pretty high speed most of the time and I know that there are two patches of rubber the size of my fist between me and a very bad day. In a hard lean at 80mph those two patches are the most important part of my bike. I'll cut corners on accessories, try and do all the work I can to save money and even shop for the cheapest way to clean but I never want to wonder what's between me and that street screaming by my knee. Maybe I would have a different perspective if I rode slower on mostly straight roads but where I ride (North GA and NC) there's not much straight around.
  21. Every time it rains.... This is what I mean by judgement though. If you are able to mobe then do so but if the lane beside you is busy and you do what you can to slow and move as far in your lane as you can then the officer should look at intent and conditions not just write a ticket.
  22. GA has the law as well but I've never heard of a "trap" ass it were. I think it's a good law but just like any other law, it's the spirit that needs to be enforced not the letter. What if changing lanes would create another problem? If the driver is flying by the emergency vehicle he should be pulled but if the driver slows and moves as far over as possible then the officers should use reasonable judgement. Just my .02
  23. Just get a dog bowl like Dray's.:rotf::rotf:
  24. I have to echo the feelings about the Venture. 2 years ago I was looking for my first bike in 17 years. I used to ride an '84 Wing exclusively before my first child was born but sold it doing "the Dad thing". I was looking for another Wing but couldn't find one at the price I wanted to pay. I didn't want to go over $5k because it had been so long and I didn't know I would get back into it like I have. I found an '89 VR with 26K for $4500 and the dealer threw in 2 helmets so I went with it. I'd never ridden a VR before but it seemed like a nice bike and the price was right for me. Well.... in just 2 years I now have 92k on her and I'm very pleased. It's rare that I ever drive my car anymore.
  25. Todd, I'm going to try and make it Saturday. I don't know for certain yet but I hope to be there. Thanks for the offer of help. The only welder I know lives in Savanah.
