Of coarse the best picture of mine doesn't have me in it. That's what makes it good.

My Dad always used to say, "whether it's cold or whether it's hot, we will have weather whether or not". 63 and raining here in Atlanta but looking around the country I think we have it pretty good.

Sounds great. It looks like we have a tentative date. Thanks Steve for the offer and thanks Terry for putting things together. The driveway looks easy enough. After all, what better place to dump your bike than right in front of a shop? :rotfl:

I'm in. Sling, do you think you could make that from Augusta?

Thanks guys. Steve that would be awesome. I would love the help on that. I have the Wreaths Across America Ceremony in Milledgeville this weekend and then we're into Christmas week. I'd hate to impose over the holiday. If you have a weekend free in January just let me know and I'll head up there. Thanks again.

This is a first for me. The wind blew the bike over today. I guess the cover acted like a sail. There are small dents on the underside of the crash bars, the passing lamp has a very small dent but no scratches, the rght side of the fairing has some scratches and the right engine guard looks like it's bent up about a half inch. The lower is just out of allign now but not a real problem. I guess I got out of it ok. Questions, is the fairing the same color all the way through so that I could just buff the minor scratches out without repainting ('07 RSMV) and how hard would it be to bend the engine guard back the half inch? THIS SUCKS!!!!!

I agree, it's a niche bike at best. Maybe even a "proof of concept" bike now that so many people are getting into bikes. Possibly testing the waters to see how many people are out there that would buy an automatic that wouldn't try a traditional bike. They say it merges the best of Sport/ST/Cruiser but it just misses on all three. Traditional cruisers won't like the styling, sport riders won't like the seating and there's nothing that says "tour" anywhere. I would never own an automatic unless I couldn't pull the clutch and if that were the case I probably shouldn't be riding anymore on 2 wheels. Then maybe an automatic trike. We'll see if it sells but I think most will see it as a glorified scooter. It does look pretty cool though.

I kind of like the idea. The only issue would be liscencing and insurance. If we have someone with a legal mind that can answer those questions I would be up for it. I don't have a lot of money but I would donate something.

Sorry to hear what's happening Squid but we all know this is temporary. You won't be off for long. My wife has been out of work for quite a while and we are looking at the same thing. I guess the thing that's keeping me on is living down here. I can ride 12 months and the bike gets better mileage than the cars so we're looking to sell one of them instead. If GM does go into reorg. we'll just pray it doesn't effect the plant you supply.

I have the Garmin Zumo 550 as well and can't say enough about it. I do admit the price can be an issue but also consider the overall design of any GPS you use on a bike. The most important aspects are vibration, weather and operation with your left hand and with gloves. It doesn't matter how good the deal seems, if the unit won't do what you need it to do it's a waste. I have friends who have purchased GPS units that couldn't take the environment they were in and the warranties wouldn't cover them because of "missuse". I have another Garmin I bought for my wife's car. I love the unit but it would never survive on the bike. Maybe on a beautiful sunny day at low speeds but unfortunately that doesn't qualify for the majority of riding I do that requires a GPS. Garmin also makes a Zumo 450 that's $200 cheaper because it doesn't have some of the features but is still designed the same as the 550. I guess my .02 worth is to not waste money on something that will just be a disappointment. Pick the unit that does what you want it to do and then find a deal on that.

Great news Dan. If the day ever comes that any of us quit it needs to be on our terms and not because of fear. Thanks for posting and thanks for staying with it untill you beat it.

I don't usually write letters or post things like this but I have to this time. I purchased a Zumo 550 about 18 months ago and I've loved it. It's been great and done everything I could have wanted. A couple weeks ago I took a trip to Florida and on the trip I had my first problem. The unit locked up and I couldn't get it to do anything. I tried all the usual stuff like pulling the battery and doing a hard reset but nothing worked. When I got home I called Garmin for some help. We went through all the steps again and it was obvious I would have to send it in. The unit was out of warranty so I was just hoping it wouldn't cost too much. The Garmin rep. said she had heard of this happening before but it was very rare and she'd never heard of it with the Zumo. She said it was obvious I hadn't done anything wrong so she was going to cover the repair under warranty anyway. (I hadn't requested that, she just offered) I thanked her and sent it off last week. I expected to have a repaired unit some time around Christmas if I was lucky because of the season, vacations etc. I had no complaints because after all they were doing this for free when they didn't have to. When I got home yesterday I had a brand new unit waiting for me. They even loaded the most current version of maps so I don't have to purchase them. There and back in one week!! Over the holidays!!! FOR FREE!!!!! Now that's what I call customer service. The Zumo 550 is already the best bike GPS out there and with this type of service I have really become a loyal customer. With the differences in GPS systems becomming less and less, this is what will continue to keep Garmin as the leader. Just had to let you all know.

New Guy in Town

I'm sure Reed would love to be Rich..... Or maybe Rich would rather be Reed. What were we talking about again? -
Great post RomTom. Thanks for sharing your story. Buddy I won't presume to tell you what you should do. I'm glad that you're going to be ok although it will take some time. I've totalled 2 bikes and been down a total of 6 times through 30 years of riding. I can honestly say that I never really thought about not getting back on but I do have friends who stopped riding after 1 minor accident. It's really up to each individual to make that decission. We ride because we love it but if the day comes when you no longer get any enjoyment from riding then why bother? This is something that no one can decide but you. I ride 12 months a year in any weather because it's what I do. I have a friend who is pretty new to riding who felt that somehow he was "not as tough" as I am because he didn't want to ride when it dropped into the 30's. He and I talked and I told him that toughness had nothing to do with it. I have the right gear and bike to handle the cold. I told him if he couldn't relax it wasn't a safe ride and he should stay off. He had nothing to prove to anyone. I'll tell you the same thing. You have a few months of healing ahead of you. Next summer you'll have time to think. You have nothing to prove to anyone. You've ridden because you loved it and only you will know if you still have that reason when the time comes. If you can look at what's happened and see it as a learning experience that will make you a better rider then you'll be back. Heal up and we'll be praying for you brother.

Thanks Carl. I'm an American but I grew up in London Ont. I now travel to Canada on a regular basis working for an airline. Canada is a great country and I was very pleased a couple years ago when Canadian Missions were posted to the Patriot Guard website. Anyone who is willing to risk their lives so others in the world can understand the dream of freedom should be honored and never forgotten. Thank you to all my Canadian brothers for your steadfast belief and willingness to sacrifice to make this world a better place for all.

Goldwing Tow Bike that can Tow 2 Harleys Pictures
loehring replied to frogmaster's topic in Watering Hole
This really is a useless vehicle for all the reasons stated. I'd like to see it towe a full size SUV instead of the little VW. I would also question the longevity if that's a stock drive train. Of coarse the 1800-6 has the power but will the trainsmission, clutch and shaft really hold up after a few hundred towes? Just another fun engineering exercise if you ask me. No realistic application. -
I had the same issue on my '89. They won't sell you just that piece so I ordered the tubing with the valve. I think you could fix it without the part though. That piece doesn't screw out but is held in by the gaskets and a ball bearing that is backed by a spring. You can see the bearing pop into the hole in the tube when you position the valve. It would be possible to use pliers to pull the valve out but be careful because the bearing and spring will take off and they're pretty small. If you don't loose them you would be able to replace the gaskets and reinsert but it's a little tricky. I had to do this because I couldn't get the old tubing out of the engine to replace it with the new one. I ended up taking the old valve out and replacing with the new valve. I found out about the bearing and spring when I pulled the old valve. Luckily I had the new valve to replace because I still haven't found the old spring and bearing. As for finding the right sized gaskets, I never tried so I don't know. Good luck and watch for flying bearings.
